  • Biography*: He was in the Civil War, C.S.A. - Iron Cross on grave.

Hamilton Jones Leonard was born February 8, 1847, and departed this life January 6, 1920; aged 72 years, 10 months and 28 days. He was married to Ellen M. Young September 10, 1868, who preceded him to the glory world by only eleven days. He leaves five sons and two daughters, as follows: C. E., H. A., J. B., B. H. and R. L. Leonard; Mrs. A. W. Craver and Mrs. J. C. Leonard. He also leaves two brothers and two sisters on his mother's side—Messrs. Alex and Levi Evans and Mrs. Katie Evans and Mrs. Sallie Leonard.

He professed faith in Christ at a very early age and joined Shiloh M. P. Church as one of the charter members and remained true to his profession and church to the date of his death. He volunteered at the age of seventeen in Confederate army and served faithfully to the surrender in 1865. He was ever faithful to his church, state, and community.

His funeral was conducted Thursday, January 8, at Shiloh by his pastor, Rev. C. A. Cecil, assisted by Rev. J. H. Moton, of High Point, an ex-pastor, and his body was laid to rest beside that of his loving companion with whom he had been privileged to for a little more than fifty-one years,

He was a pillar in Shiloh church and had been an active member of the board of trustees to one year ago, when he became too feeble to attend the quarterly conferences. His church honored him by making him an honorary member of the quarterly conference for life.

"Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."
His nephew and class leader—A, H. EVANS.

  • Biography*: Name reference - Gravestone has Col. Philip Hedrick (of George) He was one of the elders who assisted in organizing the NC Classis. The house built and occupied by Col. Hedrick still stands (1931) on the farm on the west side of "Four Mile Branch", about one and a half miles south of Hedrick's Grove Reformed Church. It is now (1931) occupied by Mrs. Martha Beck. It was a fine house 100 years ago. It is two stories high, with a large brick chimney at either end, with broad open fire places. Nearby at the foot of the hill is a spring, surrounded by three oak trees, one pin oak, and two chestnut oaks. Around the house are two cedar trees, one walnut, two maples and six apple trees. The six apple trees are what are left of more than 200 apple trees left by Col. Hedrick 50 years ago. About one mile away Col. Hedrick had another large orchard. All the apple trees were of the "Brandy" variety.

  • Biography*: Moravian. Naturalized in Culpepper County, VA in 1745.

Daniel Rupp, Thirty Thousand Names of ... Immigrants in PA. Pages 57, 58. He set sail from Rotterdam, Holland, on the English ship James Goodwell on 15 Jun., 1728, bound for America. After a voyage of four months, he arrived at Philadelphia, PA, on 11 Sep., 1728. With him was Has Martin Valck, perhaps a brother, cousin, or maybe, his father. About 1734, after serving a period of "indenture" of from three to six years as a bond servant to pay his transatlantic passage, he became a part of one of the first southward migrations of "Pennsylvania Dutch", as German settlers such as he came to be called, down the great wagon road from PA, through the "Great" or Shenandoah Valley of VA, and eventually down into the Carolina. Martin Walk settled in what is now the northern part of Madison County, VA. There he joined a German colony at the foot of the "Great Mountains" on the Rappahannock River that dated from 1725. He married Catherine, daughter of a wealthy German planter and slave holder, Michael Clore /Clawr/Klor,Glor, who had emigrated to VA in 1717. Michael Clore was one of the most prominent men in his community and a pillar in the Lutheran Church. The wedding took place before 19 May, 1735. On that date Michael Clore sold 100 acres of his 698 acre grant obtained in 1728 to "Martin Wallick". On 20 Jul., 1736, Martin Walk and Tobias Wilhide did jointly take up... survey, [and patent] 400 acres of land in Great Fork of Rappahannock River in [what was then] Orange County, VA.

In Sep., 1748 Tobias Wilhide and Martin Walk divided their land into two parts and Martin Walk and Catherne Walk sold their 200 acres to Michael Yeager. However, the Walks retained other lands in the area until much later. Martin Walk moved to Rowan County, NC about the death of his wife. His name appears in Rowan County records on 11 Jul., 1754, when he was a joint bondsmen with Daniel Garrett in a lawsuit. By Jan., 1756, Martin Walk, Sr. had purchased 165 acres of land in the area and was well on his way to becoming a prominent member of his community.

In 1778, at the beginning of the American Revolution, Martin Wallox [Walk] took an oath of allegiance to the state of NC. His son, Martin Walk, Jr., was one of the "nonjurors" not taking the oath at that time. Later during the War, Martin Walk received a "pay voucher" from the state. This could have been for military service or for supplying provisions to state troops. However, it is not clear whether this was Martin Walk, Sr. or Martin Walk, Jr.

    Martin Walk, Sr.
and Catharine Walk sold their remaining lands in VA in 1782.

On 8 Feb., 1785, the Will of Martin Wollox was probated in Rowan County, NC. No wife was mentioned. Peter Fry, his son-in-law, and Solomon Walk were appointed as administrators of his estate.
