- Biography*: John grew up in the Horseshoe Neck area.
John made his living as a farmer and miller.
John fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy. He enlisted in Wake County on July 16, 1862. He was a private in Company I, 14th Regiment of the North Carolina troops. Company I, known as the Lexington Wild Cats, was from Davidson County. Officers were: Captain - Thomas B. Beall; Lieutenants - Samuel W. Brasington and William M. Holt.
From the time of his enlistment John Giles was present or accounted for until captured at South Mountain, Maryland on September 15, 1862. He was confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, until transferred to Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia on October 2, 1862 for exchange. He was declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on November 10, 1862. He rejoined the company and was present or accounted for until he was captured at Strasburg, Virginia on September 23, 1864. He was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland until released on June 21, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. - Birth*: John was born on 25 Oct 1830 at Davidson County, NC.
