Note, Source: Gary Leonard - My father Carroll M. Leonard, and a brother Wm. Dean Leonard searched for the location of this bible over a period of 30 years. Finally in 1996 Dean was given the bible by a cousin in Los Angeles, CA. A provenance of this bible was written by William Dean Leonard, 13 Oct 2006, San Jose, CA.

Summary of the Provenance of the Keelin Leonard Bible:

Mary Rinkard, wife of Valentine Leonhardt, III b 1784, Rowan Co., NC, brought a Bible with her from Germany to America when she emigrated about 1780. This Bible, which became known as the Keelin Leonard Bible was printed with one column on each page in German and one column in English. After the death of her husband in about 1825, Mary emigrated to ...

Upon Mary's death in 1859, the bible was given to her eldest son, Keelin, and he carried the bible with him until his death in 1901.

After maintaining possession of the Bible for many years, Dean presented it to his younger brother, Gary Leonard, while on a family reunion in Albuquerque, NM, 3 Oct 2006.

  • Biography*: Note, Source: Carroll Leonard - The widowed mother, Mary (Rinkard) Leonard, on the death of her husband in his 34th year, loaded her 9 children and their worldly possessions in covered wagons and headed for southwest OH, settling first in Montgomery County, OH. They stayed there 7 years nd next moved to Williams County, OH. The following is a condensation of a letter written in 1952 by A. P. Musselman, Pastor of Lick Creek Church of the Brethren, Bryan, OH. It was based on a short history which had been prepared in 1950.
"In the spring of 1833, a widowed mother and her children, together with the husbands of three married daughters came from the Miama Valley in Montgomery County, OH where many of the Brethren from VA and PA had settled, to a place we now know as Williams Center. The exact course of travel may have followed buffalo and Indian trails along ridges, around marshes, across fords in rivers, and after trying experiences, arrived at the cabin of Frederick Miser, who was to be a neighbor. They lived in their wagons, with lean-to's built to these wagons with tree boughs and skins until their new cabins in the wilderness were completed."

In Lancaster County, PA he built a block house for his family, which was to be used by friends and neighbors as protection from the rampaging Indians. The building had been constructed with "Musketry" slots where the guns could be fired without exposure. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, Peter, demonstrated his loyalty by organizing, training, and outfitting a company of men to be attached to Colonel Green's Battalion (Flying Camp) of Lancaster County, PA. Peter was commissioned as Lt. Colonel and received 60 stands of arms (180) as shown on a Service Record dated 9 Sep., 1776. In 1788, Peter, deeded land to two of his sons, John and Phillip by his second wife.
