  • Biography*: Joan Dezern Terry, 66, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2015 at UNC Hospital. She was born in Durham Co, daughter of the late James “Ned” Dezern and the late Norma Ray Dezern. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph “Joe” Terry.

    Joan worked at the Orange County Clerks office for over 30 years. During that time she was elected to Clerk of Court and served two terms until her retirement. She was the former chair of the Parkinson’s Support Group that currently meets at the Orange County Senior Center.

    She was actively involved in the Roxboro Christian Women’s Group, was a member of the Mary Martha Busy Ladies and loved Picken And Grinnin at the Schley Grange Hall. Joan loved her grandchildren more than life itself and touched too numerous lives to mention. She lived each day to the fullest and will be missed by everyone that knew her.

    Mrs. Terry is survived by her daughter, Frances “Hootie” Loftis and husband, Raymond; grandchildren, David and Makayla Loftis; sisters, Helen Overaker and husband, Larry, Linda Kessler and husband, Tommy; sister-in-law and caregiver, Phyllis “Tony” Phelps and special friend, her Maltese, Sissie.

    A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday at Grace Independent Baptist Church in Cedar Grove with Rev. David King, Rev. Randy Carter and Rev. Charles Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

  • Biography*: Francis Stephen Vogel, loving husband of 50 years to Helen Joyce Vogel, dedicated parent, acclaimed neuropathologist, died in Augusta, Georgia, on August 4, 2015 amongst family and friends.

    Born September 29, 1919 in Middletown, Delaware, to parents who were teachers, he graduated from Villanova University, Case Western Reserve Medical School and trained in Neuropathology at Cornell University. He served in the United States Air Force. As a professor of neuropathology, he retired from Duke University in 1991 after 30 years of teaching, research, and clinical service. President of the International Academy of Pathology for two years, he then served as Executive Director until 1998. Returning to clinical service and teaching, he retired at age 87 from Wake Forest University. His many interests included horticulture, outdoor sportsmanship and beekeeping.

    A devoted father, his death was preceded by his wife, Joyce Vogel, his son, Stephen Vogel and his grandson, Jackson Vogel.

    He is survived by his children and their spouses; Joseph Vogel, Hans Vogel and wife, Lisa, Daniel Vogel and wife, Ethel, Patrick Vogel and wife, Susan and Mary Vogel Hitchcock and husband, Mike; grandchildren, Rachele Vogel, Marisa Vogel, Nina Vogel, Hans Stephen Vogel, Jennifer Vogel, Stephen Vogel, Will Hitchcock, Katie Hitchcock, great grandson, Nalaki Merman, and his close companion and caregiver, Janet Stuckey.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2015 from Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Chris VanHaight, OFM, presiding. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

    The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 10:00 -11:00 am prior to the Mass.

    David was born Oct. 30, 1972, in Davidson County to J.D. and Shirley Hinkle Younts. He was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. He was a vendor at Cooks Flea Market where he had many friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Arnold and Gladys Hinkle, and paternal grandparents, Alfred and Clara Younts.

    Surviving are his parents of the home, and many aunts, uncles and special cousins. Also surviving is a special aunt, Ruth, who was like a second mom to him.

    Mr. Jimmie Randal “Randy” Jones, 64, of Yountz Road, died Sunday, June 24 at his home after declining health.

    A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 27 at New Friendship United Church of Christ, by the Revs. Butch Conrad and Sarah Snell.

    The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home.

    Mr. Jones was born August 1, 1947 in Davidson County to Homer Ray Jones and Woodrow Wilson Edwards Jones. He was the retired owner of the Travel Center and a member of New Friendship United Church of Christ. He also had worked with ARC of Davidson County and was a member of the Lexington Memorial Lodge #473 and the Order of the Eastern Star #98. His brother, Homer “Buck” Jones, his sister, Rachel Jones Welborn, and his beloved green parrot, Billy, preceded him in death.

    He is survived by his wife, Joyce Younts Jones of the home; his son, Dr. Christopher Todd Jones and wife, Carol, of Mt. Vernon, GA; his daughter, Stacy Jones Wilson and husband, Dale, of China Grove; and his grandchildren, Anna Wilson, Justin Wilson, Silas Jones, Isaiah Jones, and Elizabeth Jones.
