Private. Enlisted in New Hanover County [NC] at age 38, May 29, 1863, for the War. Present or accounted for through Dec. 1864. 2nd Co. K. 40th Regt. NC Troops (3rd Regiment NC Artillery). This Regiment was made up mostly of Bladen and Robeson County, NC men.

Deed, dated 7 Nov., 1871, Deed Book KK, page 452, Robeson County, NC, records Seth Smith and wife selling land to Samuel J. Taylor for $400.00 for a piece of land containing 200 acres on both sides of the Wild Cat Branch, joining lands of Alfred Willis, Mrs. Nancy Regan on the West, John T. Melvin on the South, Jas. S. Regans and Mrs. L. A. Kinlaw on the East, Daniel Baker and Jas. S. Regans on the North. The land had been patented by Ralph Regan, Sr. It also included another piece of land of 25 acres lying on both sides of Wild Cat Branch.

Mr. Samuel J. Taylor. In the death of Mr. Samuel J. Taylor, which occured at his home on the last Sunday night, August 22nd about midnight, Howellsville township, lost one of her oldest and most honorable citizens. His death was not all unexpected, swing? to his extreme old age, the doctors having informed his friends that they could render no assistance. He was born in the year 1823 and was 86 years old, has been married three times and was the father of 22 children, V. H. Taylor, Esquire, of the Lumberton Bar, being the youngest one living. His first wife was Miss Easter Smith, second miss Harriett Byrd, and his third, Miss Rosa Prevatt, all Robeson County girls. His body was interred at the Howell graveyard Monday afternoon at 3 O'Clock. The funeral was conducted at the grave by the Pastor of the East Robeson Circuit, Rev. Mr. Jenkins. Mr. Taylor was a kindly disposed man, a good neighbor, and a man of very fine sense of justice. He leaves his widow -- a most consecrated Christian and lovable woman, who stood by him with matked fidelity in his declining years and administered to every want with all skill and proficiency possible for human hands to render and eighteen children to mourn his death.
