Lonnie Hartman Townsend, 90, died Thursday night at Southeastern General Hospital after an extended illness. A native and lifetime resident of Robeson County, he was prominently engaged in real estate and farming most of his adult life. Mr. Townsend moved into St. Pauls community from Barker Ten Mile community in 1908, and was active in founding the Town of St. Pauls in 1909. He was a charter member of the First Baptist church of St. Pauls, which he helped to establish in 1910, and served on its board of trustees for many years. Always active in civic and political affairs, his non-business activities , included a term as Robeson County Commissioner and lifetime membership in the Democratic Party.
First married in 1904 to Myra 0. (Arkle) Broadwell, who died in 1940, he is survived by his second wife, Mrs. May S. Townsend, the former May S. Stallings of Harrisburg who resides at 301 W. McLean, St. Pauls. Other, survivors include two sons, Lawrence H. Townsend of St. Pauls and E. T. (Thomas) Townsend of Wilmington, one daughter, Mrs. R. G. Potter, and one stepdaughter, Mrs. Oliver Carter, both of Wilmington, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held from the First Baptist Church in St. Pauls at three o'clock Saturday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. L. H. Knott, Pastor, assisted by the Rev. S. N. Lamb, the Rev. R. H. Poole, and the Rev. A. G. Tyson. Burial will be in the family plot at Ten M i l e Baptist Church, where graveside Masonic rites will be held. The body will lie at the church for one hour before the service.
Active pallbearers will be D. D. McColl, Paul T. Canady, J. H. Brisson, C. H. Harrington, Neill T. Alford, and William E. Moore. Members of the local Masonic Order will serve as honorary pallbearers. - Birth*: Lonnie was born on 25 Oct 1873 at NC.
