But, Bro. David was ready to go. As Paul made a statement, Bro. David is absent from the body in the presence of the Lord.
I thought about the day I visited David several times after he was bedridden. The last time I was in the room, and I told the family I was going on in, and they came in a few minutes later. I talked to him a few minutes and got ready to leave, reached over and kissed him on the forehead and had prayer just between me and him. I told Bro. David: I love you and we are going to see that your family is taken care of; and he whispered in my ear, and Bro. Sonny did not know when he told me what he did at home last night what a blessing that was, because he said Bro. Howard, David loved you and he still loves you. That day at the home when I prayed and whispered I loved him, he whispered in my ear: Bro., I love you and will always love you. I cherish that; I cherish this family.
I want to share with you just a few thoughts this afternoon. The Bible tells us about a woman over in Jeremiah 15 verse 9. She was a mother of seven children; that she languished, so she hashed. But this is what sorter stuck out in my mind. In Jeremiah 5 verse 9 it says she has given up the ghost; her sun is gone down while it was yet day.
I think about Bro. David. He was 57 years old. Normally the Bible tells us we normally live three score and ten. David was cut short. His sun went down early. Throughout the Bible we find several things that talked about death. First, it refers to the fading of a flower, the falling of the leaves, or the setting of the sun. Here the sun set for this mother of of seven. As I thought about Bro. David, and as I thought about Sister Donna, Andy, Leighanne and the family, I thought about the setting of the sun, and want to share a couple of thoughts to all of you, because if David could say anything to all of you now, he would say, don’t wait until you are sick and afflicted to tell people you love them and they are special to you. Over and over again after Bro. David got sick, he would always tell you I love you, I love you. David was always a sweet sweet fellow, but I’m going to tell you through his affliction, I saw an even more mellow side of Bro. David. He was always so tenderhearted, but he was more tender after this. I believe he realized life is precious. Don’t take life for granted; it is like a vapor; it is here today and gone tomorrow.
As I was up there the last time, Miss Donna came in, and David was in a semi-coma, and she said, David, honey, I love you, I love you David. And then in a little bit Andy came in. He said, Daddy, I love you; hear me, Daddy, I love you. Leighanne came in and said I love you, I love you. A loving family.
Tell your children and your wife, folks, while you have them with you. That you love them. Pin flowers on them while you have them. Make the most of life; make the most of a forgiving spirit, and a going on for the glory of God. Don’t let bitterness over-take you; don’t let malice or hurts run you or spoil you, but you go on for the glory of God. That’s what Bro. David would say to everybody here today.
As I thought about the rising and the setting of the sun, I realize the sun sets by appointment of God. Over in the Book of Genesis, God said: Let there be light and there was light. He lets the greater light rule by day and the lesser light rule by night. And the sun began to rise and began to set from that day. The sun rises and sets by appointment, but the sun for Bro. David has set, and when it comes to you and I in our life, the Bible says in Hebrew that the appointment for a man to lie in judgment, for surely as the sun is going to come up and as surely as the sun is going to set, one day you too will father rapture and will die. Oh, you will be found and you will die. Make sure you know Jesus Christ as your personal saviour. The sun has an appointment, but not only that it goes down for the benefit of the human race; the sun goes down so that you and I can lie down on our bed and close our eyes and get our rest and store up our energy for another day.
I told Sister Donna as I was at Mr. Hightower’s the other night that he’s just resting; Christ says he’s just resting; but he’s going to be running all over glory, and I believe that with all my heart and all my soul. In a little while when I finish speaking, we’re going to let David speak to you through a song, the last song he sung at this church. That song is, "Somebody Touched Me". I thought about Bro. David and lay in my bed and wet my pillow case with tears. I thought, Oh yes, Oh yes, 57 years ago in his mother’s womb God toughed him and gave him life. He grew up and a little old Tennessee girl come along and God touched his heart. And then God touched him and gave him the ability to bring forth life himself and let him bring forth a strapling good looking son and a sweet daughter. He loved both with all his heart and with all his soul. God touched him.
I remember the day when David had visited someone and came back and said, "Preacher, God touched me with salvation and I am saved." Oh, the touch of God. Somebody touched him; He knew, Bro. David knew who touched him. It was no other Than God Almighty. But for some reason, like the saint of old Job, God touched our beloved David with affliction and sickness because God knew David was going to be a good soldier of the cross. Oh, he always had that smile that could stop a freight train when he walked in this church. He was never down on being sick, never down on having that dreaded disease called cancer. I believe with all my heart and soul that God did touch him and God did heal him of that first stage of cancer, because they could not find any sign of it. I thought, Oh Lord, what can I say to Sister Donna and precious little Leighanne and Andy and the other part of the family. What can I say to them as their minister and who loved him and them dearly. Does God act as a practical joker? Does God heal you and then God takes it back? God seemed to give me a warm feeling all over and said: No, David was special and I wanted him to be one of my trophies to display my grace, my goodness, my love and my power with the reversal of having cancer. And David did always have a smile, always had something to say. And I am going to tell you something. That’s not the end of it. God did touch him with affliction: God did touch him with sickness. But one of these days, God is going to touch your Dad, your husband, your son and your brother with a glorified body that will be just Like the Lord Jesus Christ. God is still in the touching business, and he will touch your brother.
I thought about that and then I thought about the sun often goes down too soon for us. I know that Bro. David knew for a good little while that the sickness was taking its toll and I know he was able to say things to his son, Andy, that he always wanted to say to him, that he might not have said if he did not know time was short at that particular time; I know he told Sister Leighanne that one of the hardest things about crossing over was that Daddy wanted to walk you down the aisle when that right man comes along. I know without a doubt in the early hours and late hours of life, he and Sister Donna talked about some secret things that belonged to them and just them alone. So he had a lot of time to say a lot of things, but he did not have the opportunity to say everything he wanted to say, because the sun went down too soon. For some unfinished tasks he wanted to do. He told me after he got sick when I was telling him about my basement enterprise over at my house and wanted to fix up my bathroom downstairs, and I would like to put some ceramic tile down there. David said that is my pet project; I love to put down ceramic tile, and I’m going o put that tile down when you get ready to put it down. Well, that’s an unfinished task that Bro David did not get to do here, but I know it’s just as good as being done because his heart was in it because that’s what he wanted to do. And he didn’t get to finish his worship like he wanted to do, because the last several weeks he didn’t get to come tio church and he didn’t get to sing with his beloved choir. He loved to stand up there and sing and lead the congregation so many times. So he didn’t get to finish his worship as he would like, but he is finishing that worship by singing in the heavenly choir, praising the name of the Lord.
And I also thought the sun goes down to rise again. Oh, surely, as it goes down, it will come back up and one of these days Bro. David is going to be raised in splendor with that glorified body. He’s already seen his Mom; he’s already seen Miss Myrtle and Bro. Harvey, who have already gone before him. He’s already walked through each other’s mansions, and look up the who’s who and had some great conversations, but one of these days, one of these days. The sun will rise again, and the bodies will ascend to be with the Lord Jesus.
I remember Bro. Harvey (David’s wife’s father) liked to get out and farm and work in his yard. I’ve never seen a farmer plant a seed in some fresh turned soil and weep as he put the seed in the ground. The reason he did not weep when he put the seed in the fresh turned ground, he knew something better was going to come up one day. Surely we will weep now; surely our hearts break; surely we have sadness now but we don’t have to weep like those who have no hope weep; because what we’re planting will come up again another day with a glorified body just like the Lord Jesus Christ.
Bro. David, through all his sickness, God gave Bro. David special scriptures. He liked to read the Psalms, and through his sickness, Leighanne went to the Christian Bookstore and found it for him. He was claiming one verse of scripture: II Timothy 1:7 "For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a
    sound mind."
David did not have a spirit of fear; he did not fear death; he did not want to leave his family; he didn’t want to leave things unfinished and undone. He did not fear death. God did not give him the spirit of fear, because he loved the Lord and knew where he was going, because his election and calling was made sure, because he was persuaded that God was able to keep that which was committed unto him against that Day. He did not have that spirit of fear.
And I’ll tell you something else. David had the spirit of love. He was such a loving fellow. I don’t know what happened. Several years ago, Bro. David somehow got discouraged, with the battle with lupus and other things and all, and he got a little discouraged and got a little slack in church, etc., and he was thinking about not coming back, and I never did know what transpired, because we never talked about it But he got back, and got back in the choir, and I remember one Sunday morning Bro. David stood right along here in the pulpit and all the tears begun to run down his face and he said: I just want to tell you I love this church, and I love the people here, and I love you, Bro. Mills. I don’t know why I ever thought of leaving because this is the greatest church, the greatest bunch of people I know. It really touched my heart.
One Sunday morning I was coming in and Bro. David was going out to go to the choir and I asked him something or said something to him and don’t remember exactly what is was all about now, and he had a lot on his mind, but he spoke to me real sharply. He said something back real short, and sharp. I went on into my study. In just a few minutes there was a sharp rap on the door, and I said come in. There stood Bro. David in the door with tears running down his face. He said, I don’t know why I said what I did. I love you. I love you. He had the spirit of love.
He had the spirit of a sound mind. Bro. Bobby (Assoc. Pastor) said that in The Deacon’s and Trustees’ meetings he had a cool, calm and collected mind. We’ve gone through battles; your families have gone through battles; church Families have gone through battles; we’ve all gone through battles. There is something and it is greater now than it was then. He had a sound mind. He said,
Preacher, he said, any old mule can kick down a barn, but it takes a good carpenter to build one. Don’t let them kick you down, Preacher. I never have forgot that. It meant so much to me then and it means so much to me now. Bro. David was my friend.
As we think about his sun going down, we have some light in Revelations: Whether our loved ones depart in the middle of the day, evening or night, one of these days we will see them again in a gloried body.
Years ago a little 5 year old girl found a bird’s nest in her back yard in the bushes. And there were 4 speckled eggs in that bird’s nest and she was going down on a regular basis and looking at those eggs. And she had to go away a couple of days on vacation, Bible School, or something, and when she came back, all that was there were broken shells. The eggs were broken. She began to cry and she began to weep. And her brother came up and said what’s the matter. Mary said the eggs are broken and spoiled. Her brother, knowing what happened, he said, no, no, honey, the best part of the eggs have just taken wings and flew away. The best part of our Brother has just taken wings and flew away. This is not Bro. David; it is only a shell; the best part of Bro. David, his soul, has taken flight and one day will come back and be with us again.
When I was up the other morning after Bro. David had passed and was talking to Sister Donna, Andy and Leighanne about the arrangements, Donna said, don’t let me forget before you leave, David had some money in his pocket he was going to give to the June Jubilee, that he was going to put it in when he came back. When I started to leave, she came and handed me the money and I put it in my coat pocket and when I got home I counted it – two dollars and sixty six cents. And I said, God makes no mistakes; it happens just to be happening. We believe around here every
number in the Bible has a Biblical meaning, and I wondered what the number 266 means. I looked it up and searched it and no mention of 266 just like that. When I was in my study, I felt there was some significance to the number 266 cents that Bro. David had left. I looked at 266 and then at 26. Now, Bro David loved to sing and he will be singing in a few minutes, "Somebody Touched Me." The number 26 means The Gospel of Christ. And then I looked at the number 6 to make 266, and David knew who touched him: The God of Man; and the number 6 means the weakness of man. So that 2 dollars and sixty six cents that Bro. David gave to our June Jubilee represented that somebody by the name of God, The Lord Jesus Christ had touched him with the Gospel. It was not man, but none other than Lord Jesus Christ. That is what David thought of his Saviour.
I close with this poem. It has title, "I Call It Home."
When the sun sinks low in a rose tinted west
And all God’s creatures seek shelter and rest
With weary steps we seek our familiar place
For a friendly welcome and a tender embrace,
Tho far man may wander and long he may roam,
He remembered his loved ones; he remembered home.
So when our life’s work is finished and our sun is going down,
When all our loved ones are gathered round,
It’s like going home at the end of the day,
And seeing our loved ones who passed on this way,
Will be in their company and join their glad song
Some call it heaven, but I just call it home.

Will you listen now, as Bro. David speaks to you in song:

          SOMEBODY TOUCHED ME.
