        Maj. Gen Sam Jones: Commanding Confederate Forces, Headquarters District of FL, 4th Separate Brigade, Dept. of the South, surrendered the soldiers to Edward Moody McCook who was military governor of Florida from April to June 1865.

  GEORGIA ) I, CICERO C. SPEIGHT - of the State and County aforesaid, being
  LEE COUNTY ) sound in mind, though feeble in body, and knowing the uncertainty
        of human life, in the name of God, I hereby make and ordain this
        my last will and testament -
        Item 1st - I give and bequeath to my brothers Thomas L. Speight and Lewis S.
  Speight - ten dollars each to be paid to them by my executor after the payment of my
  just debts.
        Item 2nd - I give and bequeath to my brother John S. Speight - one hundred acres
  of my landed estate. This hundred acres not include the house where I now reside and
  also occupied by Spann Regan & family.
        Item 3rd - I give and bequeath to my Sister Laurenia (sic) J.. Regan the remainder
  of landed estate which is two hundred acres for Separate use during life time, not to Subject
  to the debts or other liabilities of her present or any future husband, and after death to be
  equally between her Children.
        Item 4th - I also give and bequeath to my Sister Laurenia (sic) J.. Regan the following
  Negros, via - Abraham a Man and his wife Anna and her child Judy. The said Negroes not
  to be Subject to debts or other liabilities of her present or any future husband of the Said
  Laurenia J. Regan and after her death to be equally divided between her Children.
        Item 5th - I give and bequeath to my nephew Charles C. Regan a Negro girl named Rosa.
  I make the foregoing bequest from the fact of his being afflicted, and do not intend him to be
  based on an equal distribution share with the other children of my Sister Laurenia (sic) J.
  Regan in the property mentioned in item 3 & 4 of this my last Will and Testament.
        Item 6th - I give and bequeath to my Nephew Thomas M. Freeman my bay horse Mule
  together with my bridle and saddle.
        Item 7th - I give and bequeath to my Sister Laurania (sic) J. Regan all my other
  property not enumerated (or otherwise disposed of) in this my last Will and Testament.
        Item 8th - I hereby appoint my friend and Brother-in-Law, Dr. Spann Regan My Executor
       to this my last Will and Testament.
        In testimony of which I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal this 3rd day
  of October 1863.

  Goods, Chattels, Credits, Land and Tenements of said deceased, was granted to Span
  Ragan the Executor in and by said Will named and appointed him having first taken the
  oath and performed all other requests required by law he is by order of said Court and by
  virtue of these presents, legally authorized to administer the Goods, Chattels, Credits, Lands
  and Tenements of said deceased, according to the tenor and effect of said Will and Testa-
  ment, and according to law, and he is hereby required to render a true and perfect Inven-
  tory of all and singular the Goods, Chattels, Credits, Lands and Tenements of the said
  deceased, appraised and returned to this Court according to law, and to render a true and
  correct account to the Ordinary of said County, of his actings and doings, yearly, until his

        A service monument was provided by the Veterans Administration in 2001. The monument was dedicated in 2001 with appropriate ceremonies at the Ragan Plantation cemetery by descendants, along with Sons of Confederate Veterans and United Daughters of the Confederacy.

  In the early 1850's there was a campground known as Carney's Head, on the Kinchafoonee Creek. From the inspiration obtained at these camp meetings, Salem Church was organized and land purchased 23 Apr. 1857, the southeast corner containing four acres which was cut off by the new road from Wrights Bridge to Dawson, GA. The first trustees were Jno. J. Simpson, Thomas Leroy Speight, Dr. Span Ragan and Cicero Coke Speight. They built a wooden structure and called their house of worship, Salem. One side of the church was reserved entirely for the faithful slaves. About 1889, this building was given to the black people for a house of worship and a new one was built in Bronwood. This wooden structure is still standing just a short distance from Ragan Plantation (2004 Wise Plantation) and is used by black people. during the years 1887-1889, the membership was transferred to Bronwood Methodist Church.
