          CAPTAIN JAMES REMBERT
          (1782-1858)

James Rembert, South Carolina Planter and Legislator, was born June 8, 1782 in South Carolina, within twelve miles of his Sumter County plantation (although U. S. Census or 1850 gives his birthplace as Tennessee). He was one of six children born to Elizabeth Colladon Rambert (1757-1798), first wife of John Rambert (1746-1819). According to a granddaughter, Caroline Belvin Goodwin of Marshallville, Georgia, James Rembert remained with his cousin Caleb Rembert (son of James Rembert of Rembert Hall) after the emigration of James' father to Mississippi. It is probable that during Capt. Rembert's early years, he was acquainted with Bishop Francis Asbury, who was most responsible for the establishment of Methodism in the United States. Asbury made frequent and lengthy visits to Rembert Hall, home of his good friend James Rembert (an uncle of Capt. Rembert's mother). References in Asbury's Journals indicate that he may also have been a visitor to Capt. Rembert's home near the headwaters of the Black River. A daughter and two grandsons of Capt. James Rembert were named after the Methodist Bishop.
          On Dec. 31, 1804, James Rembert married Elizabeth Burkett (who was probably a relative of his father's second wife, Sarah Burkett). They had seven children: Caleb W. Rembert (1807 - 1847); Elizabeth Rembert (1808 - 1877); Eliza Rembert (Mar 25, 1811 - May 7, 1897); Jane Rembert (Aug 16, 1813 - Apr 24, 1901); Mary Rembert (1815 - Jun 18, 1841); Ann Asbury Rembert (Sep 1,1818 - Oct 29, 1896); and Harriet Abigail Rembert (Jul 3, 1822 - Jan 27, 1924).
During the year following his marriage, Capt. Rembert acquired land on Styrrup Branch in Sumter County (present day Lee County) and began what became a large plantation of 4,060 acres. The land had been the site of a Revolutionary War Battle and Capt. Rembert occasionally found relics of the battle during walks on the plantation. Later he donated a portion of his land for the construction of Bethlehem Methodist Church and its cemetery, where he was eventually buried. The plantation was located about three miles north-northwest of the present town of Bishopville, South Carolina. During the early years of the eighteenth century, however, there was only a crossroads and a saloon where the town now stands. According to one source, the country was "close akin to heathendom." "Whisky and whisky shops abounded. Here men would get drunk, quarrel, fight, dance, and murder. Several persons killed themselves drinking" there.
A few years after Capt. Rembert began developing his plantation; all three of his brothers and one of his two sisters moved west, all but perhaps one to the then-frontier state of Mississippi. His father and step-mother also settled in Southern Mississippi, although it is not known whether he went before or after his children. The father died in Amite County, Mississippi in 1819
James Rembert was always referred to by the title of "Captain," which probably derived from service in the local militia unit. In 1841, he was elected Colonel of his unit, but chose to continue use of the title Captain throughout his life. In 1820, Capt. Rembert entered politics, serving four terms in the South Carolina House of Representatives: 1820-21; 1830-31; 1832-33; and 1834-35. During the Nullification Crisis of 1828-32, which brought South Carolina close to secession from the Union and rebellion against the federal government, Capt. Rembert voted with the Nullifiers.
In addition to politics, Capt. Rembert was involved in promoting education in his home county of Sumter. As a trustee of Mount Clio Academy, he met with other trustees on Sept. 22, 1817 to request the South Carolina Senate to grant the incorporation of the Academy, and to ask permission to hold a lottery to raise $5,000 to secure a "library, philosophical apparatus and suitable house" for the institution. Early in 1835, Capt. Rembert and the other trustees of Bishopville Academy announced the opening of the school, with one teacher and an assistant.
The trustees included Dr. Jacque Bishop, for whom the town of Bishopville was named, and Edward Barrett, whose sons James and Benjamin married Capt. Rembert's daughters Ann and Jane.
Just as James Rembert lost his father, brothers, and sister to westward migration earlier, his only son and four of his six daughters emigrated to Houston County, Georgia between 1835 and 1842. A cousin, Scarborough Rembert, is said to have been the one who prompted the move. When the Indian Springs Treaty opened up the territory between the Flint and Ocmulgee rivers, Scarborough Rembert scouted the land and returned to tell friends and relatives of the extraordinarily rich farm land that could be bought for one or two dollars an acre. Capt. Rembert became so convinced that there was a bright future for his children in Georgia that he rode horseback from his home in South Carolina to Houston County, Georgia, and purchased several thousand acres. He gave sizable plantations to his son Caleb and to his daughters: Elizabeth and her husband Moses Rountree; Ann Asbury and her husband
James E. Barrett; and Mary and her husband B. T. Marshall. In 1842, his oldest daughter Eliza Judith and her husband Major James Wiley Belvin arrived with a retinue of slaves to join the other Remberts. Major Belvin became active in Georgia politics, serving in the State Legislature in 1845.
Capt. Rembert's children made up almost half of the new plantation community of Minerva (located west of Perry in Houston County, Georgia). The entire community was made up of families who were either related before they came or soon became connected through the marriages of their sons and daughters in the second generation. Minerva was a progressive and prosperous community during antebellum days, but the community died out with the passing of the plantation system and the loss of many of its men to the Confederate service during the Civil War.
Capt. Rembert's wife, Elizabeth Burkett Rembert, died on January 5, 1837, during a visit with her children in Houston County, Georgia. She was buried in the Methodist Church Cemetery in nearby Marshallville. Four years later, her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Marshall, died (June 18, 1841) while on a visit from her home in Minerva to her father's home in South Carolina. She is buried near the family plantation in Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery. Capt. Rembert's only son, Caleb, left Minerva to fight in the Mexican war, and was killed and buried in Mexico in 1847.
On Jan. 15, 1839, after the death of his first wife, Capt. Rembert married Elenora McCandless. In 1841, he had his land surveyed, with parts of his plantation being set aside for his two daughters who had remained in South Carolina. This permitted the plantation homes of his daughters Jane Rembert Barrett and Harriet Abigail Rembert Durant to be located conveniently nearly on his own land. James Rembert died April 26, 1858 at the age of 76, and is buried between his daughter Mary Rembert Marshall and his second wife, Elenora, in the Bethlehem Methodist Cemetery. The inscription on his tombstone reads:
In Memory of Capt. James Rembert who died April 26th AD 1858,
In the 76th year of his age. His great force of character And
inflexible integrity won for him the confidence of his native
District which he represented for many years in the State
Legislature. A consistent member of the Methodist E. Church
he was always a firm supporter of the Gospel. The poor and the
afflicted always had his heartfelt sympathies and ready
assistance. In his last moments he was supported by a firm
trust in God, Looking forward with bright hopes of everlasting
          happiness beyond the grave.

(Elenora Rembert married Allen McCorquodale after Capt. Rembert's death, but was buried next to her first husband when she died on Nov. 22, 1875.)
Capt. Rembert left all of his property and most of his possessions to his second wife and to his two daughters who remained in South Carolina when the other children went to Georgia (the children in Houston County had already been given plantations). These were Jane Rembert Barrett, wife of Benjamin Barrett, and Harriet Abigail Durant, wife of John O. Durant. The will provides some information on the Rembert plantation. It was located about three miles north-northwest of the present town of Bishopville, South Carolina, and was west of, and at one time included, the Bishopville Methodist Cemetery. Capt. Rembert's home included a parlor, dining room four bedrooms, and a kitchen (which may have been a separate building, as often the case on plantations). There was also a blacksmith shop located behind the house. The 1841 survey map of the Rembert plantation shows a two-story main house surrounded by three smaller buildings. Slave houses were located nearby, across the road that led from Dubose Bridge to Camden.
Labor on the plantation was provided by slaves, who at the time of Capt. Rembert's death numbered 99. As the case with other planters, he had problems with runaways who sought freedom from slavery. His will noted that a 30 year old Negro named Henry was willed to his wife. An addition to the will tells of Henry's escape and a later inventory of goods states that he was still "in the woods."
Capt. Rembert owned a large number of horses, mules, and wagons (14 horses, 16 mules, 1 carriage, 1 buggy, 8 wagons, and 2 carts.) His crops included cotton, rye, and corn. In addition, at the time of his death, he owned 36 head of cattle, 136 head of hogs, and an unstated number of sheep. Other goods inventoried included such items as 1,000 pounds of bacon, 260 gallons of molasses, 1,000 pounds of corn, and an unknown amount of lard.

    HOUSTON-MACON COUNTY GEORGIA PLANTATION COUNTRY - 1860-1870

James Rembert's Son and Daughters, including Elizabeth Rembert and
Husband, Moses Rountree Migrate to Houston County Ga.

James Rembert lost his father, brothers and sister to westward migration earlier and then his
only son and four of his six daughters emigrated to Houston County, Georgia between 1835 and
1842. A cousin, Scarborough Rembert, is said to have been the one who prompted the move.
When the Indian Springs Treaty opened up the territory betwen the Flint and Ocmulgee Rivers,
Scarborough Rembert scouted the land and returned to tell friends and relatives of the extraor-
dinarily rich farm land that could be bought for one or two dollars an acre. Capt. Rembert
became so convinced that there was a bright future for his children in Georgia that he rode
horseback from his home in South Carolina to Houston County, Georgia, and purchased sev-
eral thousand acres. He gave sizable plantations to his son Caleb and his daughters,
Elizabeth and her husband Moses Rountree, Ann Asbury and her husband James E. Barrett,
and Mary and her husband B. T. Marshall. In 1842 his oldest daughter Eliza Judith and her
husband Major James Wiley Belvin arrived with a retinue of slaves to join the other Remberts.
Major Belvin became active in Georgia politics, serving in the State Legislature in 1845.
Capt. Rembert's children made up almost half of the new plantation community of
Minerva (located west of Perry in Houston County, Georgia). The entire community was made
up of families who were related before they came or soon became connected through the
marriages of their sons and daughters in the second generation. Minerva was a progressive
and prosperous community during antebellum days, but the community died out with the
passing of the plantation system and the loss of many of its men to the Confederate service
    during the Civil War.
Captain Rembert's wife, Elizabeth Burkett Rembert, died on January 5, 1837 during a
visit with her children in Houston County, Georgia. She was buried in the Methodist Church
Cemetery in nearly Marshallville. (Note by Ragan Pruitt - some of the Belvins are also
    buried there).
(Note by Ragan Pruitt: Elizabeth Rembert Rountree is buried in Evergreen Cemetery
in nearby Perry, Georgia, with a marked monument and her husband, Moses Rountree is
believed to be buried beside her in an unmarked grave).

          THE SUMTER WATCHMAN
          May 12, 1858

    OBITUARY - Capt. James Rembert

Died, at his residence, near Bishopville, Sumter District, April 27th in the 76th year of
his age, Capt. JAMES REMBERT. For a few years past the robust and healthy constitution
of the deceased, touched by the infirmities of ge (sic-should be "age')--has been gradually
bending beneath the weight of more than man's allotted period of years, and at last yielding
to the slow, but progressive attacks of a most acute and painful disease, he has sunk into
the tomb--forever freed from all the ills that flesh is heir to. Capt. REMBERT was descended
from Hugot (sic) ancestors, and many of their noblest virtues were exemplified in his life
and conduct--a hatred of persecution and oppression--an uncompromising advocate of the
largest religious liberty--a firm adherence to and a strict discharge of every obligation-- a
patient and uncomplaining endurance of hardships and an enthusiastic perseverance in the
accomplishment of his purposes--such were the qualities which made him what he really
was--an independent, upright, honest, honorable, religious and useful man. It was the unsol-
icited testimony of the friends and citizens who crowded his house to witness his last mo-
ments, and to relieve his sufferings that the poor of his neighborhood, embracing an extensive
circuit around him, had lost their very best friend. We have seldom known any one between
whose outer and inner man there was so striking and pleasing a contrast; the cast and expres-
sion of his features was stern and strong, and likely at first to repel; but the heart soon
learned to own, that within he was all gentleness, tenderness and sympathy, nor was this
the result of that refinement which springs from education: but the spontaneous fruit of the
noble virtues which adorned his character. Suspicion found no place in his soul wherein to
lurk and poison his own or his brother's cup; and although he felt deeply an injury or an affront,
and might even be moved to an angry action, yet it was only for a time; very soon his generous
nature returning, unsealed the fountains of brotherly love banishing malice, and not only par-
doning but producing an entire forgetfulness of his wrongs. During ten years of his life, the
deceased was a highly respectable member of the Legislature, having served during that
interval, both as Senator and Representative of his District. He has been for many years a
consistent and conscientious communicant of the Methodist Church. He was a kind and
affectionate husband--a most indulgent, liberal and loving parent--an active and enterprising
citizen--a good neighbor, a firm friend, and a reliable man. His last sufferings were soothed
by a most devoted and self-sacrificing wife, by weeping children and attentive and anxious
friends. He was truly in every relation of life, a most remarkable and worthy man. May his
children, and his children's children, cherish his virtues and emulate the purity of his life
    and character.
