    Thursday March 31, 1881

    Mr. R. W. Pruitt

It is with sincere regret that we heard the sudden decease of this gentleman, who died at his home near Salem on Friday last. Capt. Wash Pruitt was one of the most successful and enterprising planters of East Alabama, and his death is a sad occurrence to the Community and Country period. Simple in all his tastes, dignified in his bearing, gentle in his intercourse with his fellows, truthful and honest, he obtained the trust and confidence of all who came within the sphere of his influence.
His whole life was a noble comment upon the resulting straight forward, conscientious, and unswerving devotion to his chosen calling; and he leaves a name that will long be cherished by those that knew him and esteemed his many excellent qualities of head and heart.

    In Memoriam
Whereas, The Father in Heaven has seen proper in the exercise of his wisdom, and in the administration of his Providence, to transfer from the Church Militant to the Church Triumphant, our well beloved brother R. W. Pruitt, which event occurred at his residence near Salem on the morning of the 25th Ult. [Ultimate - or 25th last], after a painful and protracted illness in the 40th year of his age, and
Whereas Brother Pruitt was a useful, efficient and faithful member of this body, serving his entire active Christian life, representing Salem Church in the capacity of Steward, Trustee, and Sabbath school Superintendent, therefore be it -
Resolved that in the death of Rev. R, W. Pruitt, we as a body, in common with the Church, Society, and his afflicted family, are bereaved.
Resolved - That in this our bereavement, the interests of the Church are painfully touched and seriously affected in every department.
          Resolved,
That his life and death was a practical illustration of the power of saving faith in God, in God's Christ and in God's promises, and that, we here and now resolve to meet him in "the rest that remaineth to the people of God".
Resolved - That a copy of this page be handed to his afflicted family with the sympathies of this Conference, that a page in our Quarterly Conference Journal be spread with a copy of the same, and also that a copy be forwarded to the Nashville and Wesleyan Christian Advocates for publication.

Richard Washington Pruitt (7-4-1836; 3-26-1881) Plantation

          The Alabama Historical Quarterly Vol. 15, Nos. 2, 3 & 4, 1953 reprint Rev. F. L. Cherry's
History of Opelika refers to the Wacoochee Creek heading about two miles and a half north
of Salem, on the estate of the late R. W. Pruitt, and falls into the river about opposite the
mouth of the Mulberry Creek, on the Georgia side and about two miles above" Goat Rock",
the "Lover's Leap" of Lee County.

This was printed in "Tap Roots" (a genealogical publication of East Alabama) and
described the Richard Washington Pruitt plantation as a model farm; not the ideal of a
fancy amateur, but the REAL of a practical farmer. This farm consists of 900 acres in a
body, 500 of which were purchased about six years ago at $1 per acre, and was then an old
abandoned pine orchard without enclosure. By an intelligent system of rotation and fertiliz-
ing, it has been brought up to a high state of productiveness, and Mr. Pruitt would not take
$10 per acre for it. The appointments of this farm are all made with kalculating (sic) to sav-
ing labor, conveniences and the greatest amount of benefit to the greatest number, both
biped and quadruped, with the least amount of labor. The proprietor has been farming on this
place nineteen years and during that time, he never had a bushel of corn, wheat or bacon to
buy for his own use, though he buys for his tenants. Has Irish potatoes all the year round,
from seed bought nineteen years ago. Sweet potatoes all the year round to keep and to sell.
Has a fresh fat kid, lamb, shote or beef at any time he wants it; worships God at home and
in the sanctuary, and PAYS HIS PREACHER. Now, if this is not a practical model farm --
if this is not a practical model farmer, tell me? It is superfluous to add that he is a happy man,
his wife is a happy woman, his children are all happy and contented and his neighbors all at
peace with him and he at peace with God.

    RICHARD WASHINGTON PRUITT

On Saturday, 21 May, 2005 , A Confederate Iron Cross of Honor was installed and dedicated by Mary Brantley Chapter # 446 of The United Daughters of the Confederacy, assisted by the Robert E. Lee Camp # 16, the Col. Henry L. Benning Camp # 517, and the Stewart-Webster Camp # 1607 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The ceremony was held at the graveside, which is in the cemetery of the United Methodist Church, Salem, Lee County, Alabama with appropriate gun salutes from the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
          E. Ragan Pruitt, great grandson of Richard Washington Pruitt, related the activities of Richard’s Confederate Army activities.
Richard Washington Pruitt enlisted in the 34th Alabama Infantry, when it was organized at Loachapoka, Al., 15 April 1862. The Master Roll of W. M. Crowder’s Co. K of the 34th Regiment dated 26 May 1862, indicates they were volunteers for 3 years. R. W. Pruitt was shown as Sergeant age 23. The 34th Regiment went to Tupelo, Miss. to join General Bragg;s Army and was attached to Manigault’s Brigade, which assignment with the 24th and 28th it retained throughout the war, being at the end consolidated with these regiments. While in Mississippi, he became 2nd Lieutenant attached to Company K, Wither’s Division, Anderson’s Brigade.
It proceeded with the army into Kentucky, but being in the reserves did little fighting. Its first battle experience - and it was a bitter one - was at Murphreesboro, Tenn., 31 December 1862 to 2 Jan. 1863. Casualties: 11 died 77 wounded.
It appears R. W. Pruitt ws wounded at Murphreesboro and sent to hospital in Miss; his brother John Pruitt, was in another unit, was wounded at Murphreesboro and sent to Atlanta Hospital where he died and was buried at Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, GA. He was 1st Sergeant in 34th Alabama Company K, Captain Singer’s Co., Manigault’s Brigade. He is buried in Section C, Row 10, Grave #13.
The regiment went in early spring to East Tennessee, and R. W. Pruitt was apparently with them. The regiment was at Chicamauga, GA 19 Sept and 20 Sept 1963.
At Missionary Ridge 15 Nov many were made prisoners. In the winter of 1863-64 it recruited at Dalton, GA. and was in all the severe engagements from there to Atlanta, where July 20th to 28th the losses were heavey. It did not take part in the worst of the fight at Franklin Nov. 30th, but at Nashville Dec. 15th and 16th it was almost annihilated. Going into the Carolinas, it fought at Kinston March 14, 1865 and at Bentonville March 19th. Consolidated with the 24th and 28th, it surrendered at High Point, N. C. about April 1, 1865, not more than 100 men being left of the regiment that started out on that bright spring morning three years before, with overflowing ranks.
          R. W. Pruitt appeared on duty in battles at Shelbyville, Knoxville, and Murphreesboro, Tenn., and Greensboro, NC.
Hospital records show that Richard Washington Pruitt was wounded and a patient a t May Hospital, Meridian, Miss., on 2 occasions, Jan. 7, 1863 (injured at Murphreesboro, NC); and on Jan 24, 1864 (might have been injured at Missionary Ridge Nov. 15, 1863); both times indicated he was 2nd Lieutenant.
His Brigade surrendered at High Point, NC about April 1, 1865 and R. W. Pruitt was parolled April 4, 1865

To the Worshipful Master, Wardens and Brethren of Inman Lodge #637, F. & A. M..

    Brethren:
On January second of this, Year of Our Lord, 1939, Inman Lodge, as well as the community at large sustained a great loss in the passing to the great Beyond of our beloved and esteemed Brother Jeffrey Clark Hudgins,--

          Be it Resolved --
          1. That we pause to review briefly his Masonic career;
          2. That a copy of these resolutions be attached to the minutes of the communication of this date, an filed among the permanent records of Inman Lodge;
3.That as an expression of our deepest sympathy in their bereavement, which we also share, a copy be presented to the family of our departed brother.

Brother Hudgins was born in DeKalb County, Georgia, November 26, 1885, where he grew up in an atmosphere conducive to the development of those sturdy characteristics that made for him a leading place in the various fields of endeavor in which he engaged
    throughout his useful life.
The pioneer spirit led Brother Hudgins, at an early age, to choose as his vocation the electrician's trade, a new and unexplored field. The success he achieved in this line of endeavor is evidenced by the fact that he was always found to be holding positions of
    responsibility and importance.
It was in Benevolent Lodge #3 at Milledgeville, Ga., that Brother Hudgins began his Masonic career, where he was initiated in 1910.
He immediately began taking an active interest in the work of the lodge.

In ____________ he accepted the position of electrician for the Southern Railway at Inman Yards, and on _________ he affiliated with Inman Lodge. His willingness to serve, and his capability as a leader in the fraternity were at once recognized, for the year following his affiliation, he served the lodge as Junior Steward. In 1918 he served as S.D. (Senior Deacon), in 1919 as Senior Warden and in 1920 as Worshipful Master.

    Poem attached to Memorial:
"Immortal Bliss, I give to thee
    Because throughout life's span
Thou hast seen fit to honor Me,
    By servicing fellowman."

"We'll not forget thee, we who stay
to work a little longer here,
Thy name, thy faith, thy love we'll lay
On memory's table bright and clear."

    "Softly comes life's evening twilight,
    Gently stealin o'er our head,
    Bringing after life's stern struggle
    Peace, that glorifies the dead."

    "And now he rests,
    His greatness and his sweetness
    No more shall be at strife;
    And death has molded
    Into calm completeness
    The stature of his life."

"Gone unto that land whose peaceful shore
    There rests no shadow, falls no stain;
There those who meet shall part no more,
And those long parted meet again."

"Nor pain, nor grief, nor anxious fear
Invade thy bounds, no mortal woes
Can reach the peaceful sleeper here,
While Angels watch the soft repose."

"And ever near us, though unseen,
    The dear, immortal spirits spread:
    For all the boundless universe
    Is life--there is no dead."

"They say life is a highway:
    The milestones are the years;
And now and then there's a toll gate
Where we pay our way with tears.
"Tis a rough way and a steep way,
And it reaches broad and far,
But it comes at last to a golden town
    Where golden houses are."

"When death draws down the curtain of night
And those we love in deep darkness hides,
We can but wait the coming of the light,
And bless the memory that still abides."

    "The longings after something lost,
    The spirit's yearning cry,
    The strivings after better hopes:
    These things shall never die."

"Death is the golden key that opens
    the palace of Eternity."

"Sleep on, O friend, until the waking day,
And ever we, who loved thy presence here,
Will keep for thee, through changes manifold,
A tender memory, growing with each year."

"Say not good-bye, hearts sore distressed,
For those you mourn are but more blessed:
Are but asleep, they do not die,
They say good-night but not good-bye."
"We do not sigh when golden skies have
donned the purple shadows of night,
because we know the morning lies beyond,
and we must wait a little while for light"

The splendid character and record of our fellow citizen fully justifies me in requesting this tribute of respect.

Witness my official signature, this February 8th, 1924.
          J. H. ENNIS, Mayor
          City of Milledgeville

MR. A. J. WALL DIED THURSDAY
An Old Citizen, Confederate Veteran and Mason, Has Passed To
His Final Reward After Serving His Generation

Milledgeville has lost another citizen. Another Confederate Veteran has gone to join the majority of his comrades on their eternal camping ground.
Mr. Andrew J. Wall died at his home in this city, Thursday, February 7th, after several months of declining health. The passing of this old citizen and Confederate veteran caused egret throughout the city for he was known by all our people, as practically his long life had
been spent here, and nearly all of his activities were in a public line.
During the funeral services, which were held at the Baptist Church Friday afternoon at three o'clock, the stores were closed and business suspended in compliance with a public request signed by Mayor J. H. Ennis. Rev. H. D. Warnock, who officiated, paid a tribute to the life of Mr. Wall, referring to him as a member of the Baptist Church, a Mason and citizen and public servant. The services were concluded with the beautiful and impressive ceremonies of the Knights Templars, and the remains were placed in their last resting place in the city cemetery.
Andrew J. Wall was born in Putnam County, September 20th, 1846, and when a mere boy came with his parents to this city. Before reaching sixteen years of age he enlisted in the Confederate army, as a member of Company "C" of Major Caper's battalion. At the close of the war he returned to Milledgeville and took up the battle of life. He rendered assistance in bringing law and order out of chaotic conditions which existed here in those days. He for a number of years served the city as a policeman and street overseer. While not filling these positions he was a carpenter and aided in constructing and building.
Mr. Wall was a member of the Baptist church, and a member of the Masonic Orders, having taken the degree of Shriner, and in his daily life he exemplified the high principles to which both the church and fraternal order stand. He was perhaps the oldest living Mason in this city, filling an office in the different bodies for more than forty years.
At the time of his death, he was commander of Camp Doles, No. 730, U. C. V., and he was beloved by his comrades whose ranks have become few in numbers, as a large majority of those who wore the gray, have been gathered to their last resting place.
He is survived by his widow and six children, Mrs. W. F. Rountree, of Valdosta, Mrs. L. S. Holsey, of Hardwick, Mrs. George M. Kemp, of this city, Mr. T. J. Wall of Waycross, Mr. Clarence Wall, of this city, and Mrs. J. C. Hudgins of Atlanta.
