          A GIFTED YOUNG MUSICIAN
Mr. Joseph Ragan [Jr.] of Dawson is Making a Reputation in Atlanta.
Friends here at the home of Mr. J. T. Ragan, Jr., who has made an enviable reputation in Atlanta as an organist, will read with much interest the following from a recent issue of the Constitution:
"One of the musical events of the holidays that is looked forward to with much pleasure by the lovers of music in Atlanta is the cantata, "The Holy Infant," by Bullard, to be given by the North Avenue Presbyterian choir on Christmas night. Inasmuch as this work has not before been given in Atlanta it will be interesting to those loving sacred music, especially interesting when it is known that it has been gotten up under the direction of Mr. Joseph Ragan, one of the
youngest yet most proficient organists in the city.
"Mr. Ragan has not only made for himself a reputation as an organist, but is regarded as a pianist with a brilliant future, being one of the most talented pupils of Hunter Welsh. North Avenue church should indeed be proud to claim this gifted young musician as organist.
"The regular choir will be assisted by several others."

          MR. RAGAN'S RECITAL
Young Dawson Man Gives Enjoyable Entertainment in Atlanta
The friends of Mr. J. T. Ragan, Jr., in Dawson will read with much interest the following from the Atlanta Georgian:
"The brilliant piano recital by Mr. Joseph Ragan, Jr., pupil of Mr. Hunter Welsh, was most enthusiastically received the appreciative audience which gathered at the Atlanta Women's Club on Wednesday afternoon. The entire program, consisting of twelve extremely difficult and varied compositions by the most famous composers of the world, was presented with an accuracy, ease, brilliancy and artistic finish, which characterize the true musician, and which proved an inspiration to the music-lovers present. It is easy to predict a brilliant career for one who possesses such remarkable technique and temperament as Mr. Ragan displayed in the rare combination of strength and delicacy of touch shown in the exquisite tone production and interpretation of each number on the program. Undoubtedly he possesses the characteristics of the true artist, and he has evidently been taught by a master musician. Mr. Ragan appeared with an ease and poise which clearly indicate his thorough mastery of each selection, and he was most heartily applauded after each number. He is also a splendid organist, and at present holds the responsible position of organist and choir director at North Avenue Presbyterian church. Mr. Ragan has a host of friends in this city who recognize his unusual ability and who wish for him unbounded success. M. R."

TERRELL RAGAN’S DEAD BODY FOUND IN GARAGE
Former Dawsonian Ends His Life with Poison
    Dose in Boston, Mass

    IS ATTRIBUTED TO FINANCES

Bank of Which He was President Recently closed, and Federal Grand Jury Had begun investigation. Socially and Politically Prominent.

Terrell M. Ragan, former citizen of Dawson, who had achieved prominence in the business world, being president of the Continental National Bank of Boston, Mass., was found dead in the garage of his home in Brookline, Mass., Wednesday.
According to report at the same hour a federal grand jury was starting an investigation into the closing of his bank, the body of Mr. Ragan, who was also military aide to Gov. Joseph H. Ely of Massachusetts, was found. Carbon monoxide poisoning was advanced as the cause of his death.
Ragan’s body was found by his chauffeur, Hermon R. Broday, a few hours after Mrs. Ragan asked him to search for her husband, who failed to return after keeping a social engagement Monday night. Medical Examiner Benjamin W. Redmon said the death appeared to have been accidental but that he would make no definite report until he had made a thorough investigation.
Meanwhile Assistant United States Attorney John J. Walsh, Jr., was informed by telephone that Ragan had committed suicide, he told the federal grand jury to which he was presenting evidence in connection with the closing on December 6th of Ragan’s bank. The jurymen were dismissed until next Tuesday,
    -------------------------
          Attained Prominence.

Mr. Ragan, 37, rose in seven years from law clerk to the presidency of a bank at the time it closed had deposits of $6,281,960; capital stock of $1,000,000 and a surplus of $150,000. He was a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard reserve and a Major on Governor Ely’s staff.
Mr. Ragan was a world war veteran, and born in Terrell County, he received his early education in Dawson. With his family he had a host of friends in Dawson and Terrell County who regret the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his death and sympathize with them. He located in Boston at the end of the war, being connected with the Ginn & Company, large book makers, and a short time later began the practice of law, for which he had previously fitted himself.
He became a leading corporation lawyer in Boston, discontinuing his profession to become bank president.
Mr. Ragan was married about 12 years ago to Miss Margaret Black, prominently connected to the east, and whose father is president of the Boston Woman’s College, exclusive educational institution of that city.
Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Mattie Ragan; a sister, Miss Dorothy Ragan, both of Atlanta; three brothers, Joseph T. Ragan of Atlanta, Clarence Ragan of Houston, Texas, and Ellis Ragan of Eufaula, Ala., an aunt, Miss Lizzie Ragan, who recently retired after many years of service as postmistress at Bronwood.
Funeral plans have not been learned here as The News goes to press.

The Dawson (Georgia) News 10 March 1932 (Thurs.)
          COL. TERRELL RAGAN’S
          DEATH ACCIDENTAL
Last Rites Held for Dawson Boy at Trinity Church
          In Cambridge, Mass.

Funeral services for Terrell M. Ragan, of Boston, Mass., Lieutenant-Colonel and aide to Gov. W. B. Ely of Massachusetts, former Dawson boy whose death was noted in last week’s issue of The News, were held at Trinity church in Cambridge Friday, attended by the governor and his staff and other notables of his adopted state.
He was buried in officer’s uniform and with full military honors. A United States Flag draped the casket and flowers sent by friends in Boston and other cities filled the chancel of the church, among these being a number of beautiful floral offerings from Dawson. After the cortege left the church, Captain N. C. Brown, pilot and personal friend of Col. Ragan, dropped flowers from the air.
Mr. Ragan was president of the recently closed Boston Continental National Bank, which at the time of his death was undergoing the same investigation as that of fourteen other banks in and around Boston that failed several days previous to the closing of his bank.
A theory of suicide was advanced when his body was found in the garage at his home, but severe bruises on his head indicated foul play or injuries from falling before being overcome by carbon monoxide gas.
A lengthy investigation by the chief medical examiner, a medical examiner from another county and two private physicians, brought the conclusion which disproved the suicide theory.
Mr Ragan had only recently returned from Washington, where plans for the re-organization of his bank had been definitely approved in person by the comptroller of the currency. His friends say he was very optimistic and in excellent spirits immediately prior to his death.
The following article taken from the Boston Post refutes the idea that the death of Mr. Ragan was other than accidental:
Medical Examiner Benjamin Rudman yesterday filed his official report that the death of Lieutenant Colonel Terrell M. Ragan, president of the closed Boston Continental National Bank, was accidental, due to the inhalation of carbon monoxide gas.

          DOCTOR’S STATEMENT.

The body of the bank president was found on the floor of his garage, at his home at 1125 West Roxbury Parkway, Brookline, Tuesday, and the lengthy investigation of the medical examiner confirmed his first version that Ragan was stunned when he fell to the floor of the garage and was overcome by the poisonous fumes from the exhaust of his automobile.
Regardless of the business troubles which Colonel Ragan experienced, there was no element of contemplated suicide in his death, said Medical Examiner Rudman. He was very optimistic that the affairs of his bank should be straightened out through a reorganization plan, and he had made appointments for Tuesday and every day this week. I have interviewed a number of the friends he was with the night before he died and they all agreed that he was in excellent spirits and looking toward the future with great confidence.

          REASONS FOR CONCLUSIONS.

I arrived at the decision that death was accidental because of the following reasons: The position of the body indicated that he had fallen; his hands were doubled under him, the right knee was straight and the left knee was flexed as though he had attempted to arise; he was facing the door about four feet away from it; when he fell, he cut his nose and mouth; the door of the garage was hinged and it opened and shut with the wind; it was never locked nor closed tightly; I believed that he was stunned by the fall and overcome by the gas fumes from the car.
Dr. Rudman stated there was nothing to warrant an autopsy or further Investigation of the death. He estimated that Colonel Ragan had been dead 10 hours before his body was found.
Fred W. Strobel, former cashier of the Boston Continental Bank, said that plans were being carried forward to reorganize the bank. A meeting of the reorganization committee will be held soon."

          THE POST OFFICE

Much credit is due the faithful postmistress, Miss Elizabeth Lou Ragan for the dominant influence she has for years exerted over the young people of the town. She not only looks after Uncle Sam's business as some others could do, but is able enough worker, being
a prominent member of the Methodist Church. As for the office which she has presided over for lo these 13 years the government has recently added extensive improvements, having installed lockboxes that the public might be able to get the Sunday mail at any hour.
Miss Ragan is always willing to accommodate, yet ever mindful of the government's strict rules and regulations.
The people of Bronwood feel some others may be changed and rewarded, but the postmistress -- well, she is about as good as Uncle Sam has.

"Obituary, Dawson Journal, May 17, 1883, Charles Cicero Ragan.
CHARLES CICERO, second son of Dr. Spann Ragan and Julia L. Ragan, was born Sept 13, 1863, and was baptized in the communion of the M. E. Church, South, on the 23rd day of February, 1864, by the Rev. J. B. Wardlaw. Charles was happily converted at Salem Church during the year 1874 under the ministry of Rev. R. J. Rentz, and was admitted into the First Street Church at Macon, GA, in April 1875, under the ministry of the Rev. C. K. McDonald, and departed this life at the academy for the Blind at Macon [GA], May 8th of the present year. Charles was deprived of the faculty of sight when a child, yet he was a diligent student, and early learned to love God and to keep His commandants. At the Academy for the Blind, Charley made for himself a brilliant record. He was loved by the faculty and almost idolized by the students. He was one of those sweet-voiced singers, who, like Angel's visits, occasionally come down to our world to cheer us with their Heavenly music. Note, Source: Ragan Pruitt - Charles and 'Mollie' owned the house in the middle of Bronwood on the street behind the stores often referred to as the Denton house, which was the first house built in Bronwood about 1826. The property contained about an acre of land, half of it Charles raised a bale of cotton each year, had a very sizeable garden, and two huge pecan trees in the back yard. The house had 2 rooms on the left side, one large room on the right side and a 10' wide hall down the middle. across the front and back was a wide porch. In the front was a room that extended out at the end of the porch at each end. at the back was the large dining room and kitchen that was attached to the porch.
When Charlie and 'Mollie' died, Freddie inherited the property, and about 1940 it was sold to John Paul Holland after Freddie and family moved to AL.

    1910.

His family moved to Bronwood, GA about 1910.
    -------------------------------
William is listed in the WWII Memorial Registry (www.wwiimemorial.com) as having served the war effort by working with the Central of GA RR during the war. The entry reads - Hometown: Dothan, AL. Activity during TELEGRAPHER FOR CENTRAL OF GEORGIA RAILWAY IN DOTHAN, ALABAMA.
    ----------------------
    Note, Source: Ragan Pruitt -
William worked on the Central of Georgia RR as a telegrapher from about 1923 to 1962 when he retired when his eyes went bad. He was an expert marksman with a 12-guage automatic shotgun, often bagging 100's of doves in an afternoon during the depression; friends would furnish shells for him to bag birds for them, and when he would kill the 20 limit, he would put in paper sack and put under different trees until he had used up the shells provided; then he would collect bags and go home. Friends would just stand and watch him shoot. At 75 when he was shooting, he sighted two birds and couldn't hit one, so he knew something bad was wrong. His eye doctor diagnosed that he had cataracts, and there was no facility in Dothan, so he chartered a plane to fly him to Savannah, GA to the RR Hospital. When the doctors started operating, they discovered he also had glaucoma. He recovered and went back to work and then had to have the other eye operated on in Dothan. Retired shortly after that and moved to Americus, GA where Freddie had lived a few years before. He worked in Bronwood, Smithville, and Curtbert, GA; Eufaula, Webb, and Dothan, AL, for a few places during his 42 years of service. He loved to have his picture taken holding his gun up like he was shooting at a bird.

'Ragan' was a moderately devout Christian, having been descended from Methodist Ministers - the Ragans, Speights and Pruitts, also Baptist Ministers from the Bryans and Taliaferros. Whatever church he was a member, he became very engaged in the activities, whether playing the piano or organ, lay leader, member of Administrative Board or instructing Ushers in the Art of Ushering (even writing booklet on Ushering for use in his church. He met his wife, Nell, at a Youth Rally at North Georgia Methodist Annual Conference in 1940.

'Ragan' considered himself a gourmet cook - cooking anything he wanted and it seemed to usually turn out exceptional. His best was his burnt caramel filling cake. His family seemed to think his biscuits were best even when he over-browned the tops; they chomped on the crunchy tops, especially with blackberry jam and grape jelly at their Christmas Eve dinner parties and sing-a-longs.
Ragan was a member of Inman Lodge #637, Free and Accepted Masons, Atlanta, GA, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1956, and Secretary after that for 20 years. He is now a member of Mt.           Ragan established membership in the Sons of the American Revolution with his relationship to Captain Seth Speight; he established Supplemental Memberships with his relationship to Captain John Regan and his brother, Captain Ralph Regan, and relationship to Captain John Taliaferro, who was physician and Baptist Minister in the Revolution.

Ragan Pruitt of Lilburn, GA and William Ragan 'Bill' of Albany, GA, both descendants of both Ragan and Speight families, were instrumental in making this family project a reality.

          MISS HUDGINS BECOMES BRIDE

Arrayed in shimmering ivory satin, Miss Nell Hudgins became the bride of Yeoman First Class E. Ragan Pruitt, U. S. Naval Reserve, of Charleston, S. C. on September 5, at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church in Atlanta.
The Rev. L. B. Jones officiated, and Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Tomlinson presented musical selections.
Charles W. Pruitt of Dothan, Ala., was his brother's best man. Ushers were James H. Penland and Yeoman First Class Jack Haddle, U. S. Naval Reserve.
Miss Patty Hill was her cousin's maid-of-honor. She wore a dress of ice-blue satin with a full skirt of chiffon ending in a slight train. She wore a single strand of pearls, the gift of the bridegroom, and carried a nosegay of garden flowers.
The flower girl, little Nan Millwood, cousin of the bride, wore a floor-length model of pink organdy and carried a small nosegay. She wore a large blue ribbon in her hair.
The bride entered with her mother, Mrs. J. Clark Hudgins, by whom she was given in marriage. Her gown was of ivory satin fashioned along princess lines, featuring a sweetheart neckline and leg-o-mutton sleeves, ending in graceful points over the hands. Her fingertip veil of illusion fell from a coronet of orange blossoms and was worn by the former Miss Alice Hegwood when she became the bride of Rolland Tomlinson. Her only ornament was a gold locket, which was the gift of the bride's father to her mother at her wedding.
The bride's mother was gowned in a model of baby blue lace with a pink sash and her flowers were pink roses.
Among the out-of-town guests were Charles W. Pruitt, of Dothan, and Mrs. L. S. Holsey of Hardwick.
The young couple is now residing in Charleston, in one of the old Charleston homes in Rainbow Row, overlooking the waterfront.

          Nell Hudgins Pruitt

Probably most of you know Nell Pruitt from your association with her in one or more organizations. Working in so many organizations and businesses, she became a many faceted person, with many strong tendencies and emotions. I hope I can make you better acquainted with her as we are here together.
Nell was born in Atlanta, Georgia (Fulton County), Nov. 14, 1922 to J. Clark Hudgins and Otis Wall. She joined Mt. Vernon Methodist Church in 1931 or 1932. She graduated from Fulton High School in 1939 and the Draughon School of Commerce in `1940.
While growing up in Mt. Vernon Church, she was active in Sunday School and Epworth League Work, both on the local and city-wide level. She started teaching a class of Beginner age children when she was 14 and continued until she married and left Atlanta in 1942.
She met E. Ragan Pruitt, member of Grant Park Methodist Church at a Youth Rally at a session of the North Georgia Conference in Atlanta in Nov. 1940. She was going with James Penland, best friend of Ragan's at that time. On Sept 5, 1942, she married Ragan in Mt. Vernon Methodist Church with the Rev. L. B. Jones, Jr. (father of L. Bevel Jones, Bishop) officiating. She moved to Charleston, S. C. where he was serving in the U. S. Navy. Their first son, E, Ragan (Sonny) Pruitt, Jr. was born in the Navy Hospital in Charleston, and when he was four months old they brought him to be christened at the same altar where they were married in Mt. Vernon Church.
When World War II was over, they returned to Atlanta in Aug. (s/b Sept) 1945, where Ragan joined Mt. Vernon Church. A second son, David Anthony Pruitt was christened in Mt. Vernon Methodist Church.
While at Mt. Vernon Church she was generally active in the affairs of the church, served as Vice-Pres. of the Women's Society of Christian Service; and taught a Sunday School Class of Junior age boys.
In July 1955 the Pruitt family transferred its membership to Audubon Forest Methodist Church in southwest Atlanta as they had been residing in southwest Atlanta for 9 years. While at Audubon Forest Church, Nell served as President of the Wesleyan Service Guild (Working ladies' branch of Women's Society of Christian Service) for two years; served as Recording Secretary of the Atlanta-Southwest District, Wesleyan Service Guild for four years; served as Recording Secretary of the North Georgia Conference
Wesleyan Service Guild for two years and was slated for the presidency but health problems prevented this service. Was a charter member of the Fidelis Adult Sunday School Class and the first Recording Secretary; served in whatever capacity she could in fun-raising projects for Troup #272, Boy Scouts of America sponsored by Audubon Forest
After moving to Lilburn in 1969, Ragan, Nell, Sonny and his wife, Sue and David Pruitt joined Harmony Grove United Methodist Church where the late Rev. Randy Pollard was pastor. At the time they joined, David was serving with the U. S. Air Force in Thailand, but wrote the church, asking that his membership be moved to Harmony Grove.
While a member of Harmony Grove, Nell organized and served as first President of the Wesleyan Service Guild; served on the Worship Committee and prepared the Communion Table for two years.
Nell was a Legal Secretary for some thirty years, having worked in the Fulton County District Attorney's Office, the Fulton County Public Defender's Office, the Law firm of Dunaway, Shelfer, Haas and Newberry; law firm of Arnold and Cate; Richard T. Winegarden (when he first entered private practice and before he became Superior Court Judge of Gwinnett County, GA). She served as President of the Atlanta Legal Secretaries Association for two years, and two years as President of the Georgia Association of Legal Secretaries. In 1979 she was named "Legal Secretary of the Year" by the Atlanta Legal Secretaries Assn. and was presented with a silver bowl appropriately engraved. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
She worked about five years as a volunteer at the Carter Presidential Center, and as a Docent (Lecturer) at the Carter Library, conducting tours for visiting groups. Nell was named Volunteer of the Month at the Carter Center. When this was announced in the Carter Center Bulletin, this was printed: "Call the Volunteer office almost any Monday morning and the voice that answers will possibly be that of Nell H. Pruitt. Mrs. Pruitt is the volunteer chairman at the Carter Center on Mondays. A longtime supporter President Carter, Mrs. Pruitt decided even before retiring she wanted to volunteer at the Carter Center."
She joined the Order of the Eastern Star in 1940 and received her 50 year membership pin in due order. She served as Worthy Matron of Inman Chapter No 112 in 1949 with her husband as Worthy Patron. She transferred her membership to Mountain Park No. 524, Order of Eastern Star and served in whatever office she was asked to fill.
She loved to be with people. Whatever she did, she always put family first and foremost. Her husband says she was a tremendous wife, companion, comforter; also, a magnificent mother to their two children.
She is a member of Atlanta Chapter #18, United Daughters of the Confederacy; Philadelphia Winn Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (Gwinnett County); Gwinnett Historical Society; Golden Belles Grandmothers Club, Gwinnett County.
It's hard to compete with a person with so many facets of character and abilities.
They have two children, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren (3) girls and (1) boy and expecting another great granddaughter momentarily! (This great-granddaughter was born May 26, 2002, just a month after death of Nell)
Her love of her church work over the entire life-span kept her going when nothing else could.
Her many-years physician referred to her as a "tough-old-bird": and her family would concur that you had better believe it. She and Ragan would have been married 60 years the 5th of September, so now we are having an early celebration as a sendoff. She is in a better place and free of pain.
LET US BE GLAD THAT SHE WAS WITH US FOR SO LONG.

My best love to you and family and all the loved ones.

          As ever

          Terrell Bryan

Terrell Bryan -Terrell Bryan, the son of Reddick Bryan and Elizabeth Span Regan, was born in Georgia in 1936. He served in the 16th Louisiana Infantry during the Civil War and wounded at Shiloh and Missionary Ridge. Terrell died in Bronte, Texas, the home of his daughter, Dollie Bryan Wylie on May 16, 1920.

Thomas Jefferson Martin - I am assuming that this Thomas Martin was the husband of Laura Frances Bryan, the first child of Joseph B. Bryan (Terrell's brother) and Sarah Margaret Wimberly. According to information found in the Wimberly Family History by Vera Meeks Wimberly, Thomas Martin was a minister of God and the founder of the Grand Bayou Church.

Harriet - Harriet Louisa Albritton, born in Twiggs County, Georgia in 1836, was the daughter of Peter and Hollon Albritton. She married Terrell Bryan in 1855 in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. Harriet died in Stephenville on February 9, 1909.

Dollie - Dorothy Elizabeth Harriet Bryan, born January 17, 1873 was the daughter of Terrell Bryan and Harriet Albritton. She married Thomas Wylie.

Bunch - Terrell Little Bryan, born July 13, 1861, was the daughter of Terrell Bryan and Harriet Albritton. She married James D. Biggs.

Allie -- Alice Amanda Bryan, born November 21, 1867, was the daughter of Terrell Bryan and Harriet Albritton. She married her first cousin, John Regan Hammett.

Redic - Redic Eli Bryan, born August 2, 1870, was the son of Terrell Bryan and Harriet Albritton. He married Johnie Myrtlene "Myrtie" Hairston.

Hollie - Hollon S. Bryan, born August 24, 1865, was the daughter of Terrell Bryan and Harriet Albritton. She married James Alonzo Latta. The 13 year old daughter of Hollon's that Terrell referred to was Millard Ray Latta.

Laura - Laura L. Bryan, born April 28, 1875, was the daughter of Terrell Bryan and Harriet Albritton. She married William Harvey "Harve" Keith. At this time, it appears that Laura and Harve had three daughters; an unnamed infant that died on her day of birth is buried in West End Cemetery, Katherine Ruth Keith, and Laura Louise Keith.

Ben M. - This is probably Benjamin May Manning, Terrell's friend from Bienville Parish, LA. Benjamin Manning's sister, Mildred was married to Tilman Bryan, brother of Terrell. Benjamin was the son of Simon Manning and Mary Brown. The Mannings were neighbors of the Bryans in 1840.

John H. - John Westly Hinton was the son of William Wimberly's second wife, Mary Angelina Pittman Roberts Hinton, and John Westly Hinton. On Terrell's Confederate Pension Application, John Hinton stated that he had known Terrell for his entire life.

Charley - His identity is currently unknown.

    My Dear Brother and Sister

It has been a very long time since I have written to you or received a letter from you and have come to the conclusion that will write to you again as would be pleased to hear from you by letter again. I have but little news to write you of interest and that will very likely be of the All absorbing topic War as that is all that is talked of now. We have hard times with us now and I fear worse a coming. Though from what I've heard we are not quite so bad of as the citizens of Georgia yet for my part it is worse for me now than is pleasant you no doubt have heard ere this that Mr. Pittman was in the Army. Yes, it is even the case. It seems sometimes that it is all I can bear and on reflection I think that it is wrong for me to ________ just to think what he has left home and comfort and binding ties ____ . He has been in the service four months the twentieth of Jan. He has been home once. I have been to see him once which makes twice I have seen him. He is now stationed at New Orleans but don't know how long they will remain there as there has been a good deal of talk of their being ordered to Mobile. It is thought by a good many that Mobile will be attacked soon.

There are also. He and Jim are in the same company. It is the Castor Guards under Capt. Mabry 16 Regiment There are many of my acquaintances in it. They were all proud to see me when I went down. I only remained with Jim seven days. If it is so I can will visit him again sometimes. If I could only know that he would go through his term safe it would not go so hard with me. He was sick a few days before I went to see him but I found him up and left him well. I left the city the twenty seventh of last month. I have been quite uneasy about him ever since as there has been such a great deal of rain and it is such a muddy place where they are. they are on the___________ RailRoad. two miles from the Citty. I enjoyed my trip fine but got home with the worst cold I ever had in my life. It settled in my throat and yesterday evening it commenced getting so I had to draw a blister on it I have the worst time with my throat you most ever saw any body. It gets so bad sometimes it seems almost like it will kill me.

Pap got a letter from Lizzie Bryan a few days ago she wrote of the hard times said she was to see you last fall. She is very anxious to come back to La. Says her people won't do anything for her. Mother is going to write to her this evening. Brother I will not be able to write you an interesting letter as you will see so don't expect anything interesting.

The connection are all tolerably well. Bro. Jimmy has the chills. My baby had one this morning and is quite sick with it. I had like to of forgotten to say to you Jim Watts was also in the Army. He is in Virginia at Manassas. His time will be out in June. Mother's health is not very good but better than has been in sometime.

We have been somewhat looking for you to move out hear as we could not hear from you and you've been writing something like coming. All would be very glad to see you and have you live among us. I think if you have much of your provisions to buy it would be much better for you to come ___ they are cheaper here than there. I don't hear of anything selling here but Pork. It has been selling at ten cents. Corn and other things have been made in great abundance so there is no sale for it unless it is sold to the government. I think the poor soldiers ought to be well supplied with corn meal for they don't get anything but Flour and beef to eat, it is enough to kill the last one of them. It would to if they were not so patriotic.

Well brother I will come to a close as have nothing more of interest to write. Kiss Lou and the babies for me. Write very soon and let us hear from you. Your devoted sister

          Fannie Pittman.

    JUANITA MCINTYRE
Published: Monday, February 8, 2010 10:15 AM EST
LUMBERTON -- The family of Juanita Wayne McIntyre is saddened to announce her death on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010. Juanita was born on Nov. 2, 1920 in Wananish, a small farming community near Lake Waccamaw. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Newkirk and Nora Pierce Wayne; her husband, E. Regan McIntyre Jr., and four brothers and three sisters.

Despite growing up in the Great Depression, Juanita had many fond memories of her childhood. Her father died when she was 12 but her mother and the nine children continued to farm successfully. This developed within her a great work ethic mixed with family and fun.

Juanita completed all grades at Hallsboro, graduating from Hallsboro High School. She also graduated from Marlboro Business College in S.C. She began her business career as Assistant Secretary & Treasurer of Lumberton Production Credit Association. She met her husband, Regan, after the war while he was performing repairs on the McIntyre Building, her place of employment. They were married on May 8, 1948. They soon started McIntyre’s Farm Supply Inc., later becoming McIntyre’s Marine and Sports Center where she worked with Regan as Secretary and Treasurer of the Corporation.

In addition to her 40-year business career with her husband, Juanita balanced children, home, community and church duties. She was a charter member of the Mr. and Mrs. Garden Club for 50 years, holding many different offices.

A longtime member of First Baptist Church, Juanita served in various leadership roles, including that of Deacon, and children’s Sunday school teacher. She considered her greatest accomplishment to be her involvement in the Girls In Action Mission Organization at First Baptist Church in Lumberton. She served as G.A. Director and Leader of this organization for 43 years. She was recently recognized by First Baptist for her outstanding dedication and leadership in teaching young women about missions and the Great Commission.

Juanita continued to be active in First Baptist Church and the Lumberton community until a stroke in the summer of 2009 restricted her activities.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010 at First Baptist Church, Seventh and Walnut Streets, with the Revs. Dr. David Elks and Dr. Russell T. Cherry Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Meadowbrook Cemetery. Biggs Funeral Home, 801 N. Chestnut St., is handling the arrangements. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8 at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

She is survived by two daughters, Pierce McIntyre Overman and husband, Bill of Wilmington, Melynda McIntyre Flynn of Virginia Beach, Va; one son, E. Regan McIntyre III of Lumberton; a brother, C.P. “Smoke” Wayne and his wife, Ethel of Whiteville, and Dr. and Mrs. Douglas C. McIntyre of Lumberton, Mary B. Wayne of Brunswick, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church for G.A. Missions, 606 North Walnut Street, Lumberton, N.C. 28358 or to the Robeson County Church and Community Center, 600 West 5th Street, Lumberton, N.C. 28358.
