          OBITUARY OF REVEREND THOMAS SPEIGHT
          A strong man in Israel, has fallen, -- Rev. Thomas Speight, is dead. This announcement will carry sorrow to many a heart.
          Mr. Speight was born in Greene County, N. C., on 15th of February, 1787; consequently, was in the seventy-second year of his age; but time had touched him gently, and with a robust constitution, he promised to be serviceable to the Church, yet for several years, and had no accident befallen him, it is likely it would have been so; but an accident confined him to his house and bed, and at last, resulted in his death.
          Mr. Speight joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in the year 1807; he was licensed to preach in January 1829; he was ordained Deacon in 1833, by Bishop Reading, and was consecrated to Elder's Orders, by Bishop Andrew, in 1838. His ministry extended over a period of thirty years, and his labors were both abundant and efficient. No circumstances, however discouraging and forbidding could overcome what he conceived to be his duty in the Master's service; he was "instant in season and out of season;" went everywhere when duty called him, and was well received and sustained by those to whom he ministered; those who knew him best, admired him most. The writer enjoyed the friendship of this good man for many years, and to the last; it was his good fortune to have the opportunity of attending upon his ministry frequently, which was always, both instructive and encouraging.
          Mr. Speight's education was not perfect, with him there was no display of rhetoric, but his mind was strong, clear, comprehensive, and whatever was contained in the text, relating either to precept or practice, never escaped him, but was always presented in the more useful and impressive manner. This is his record.
          "Servant of God - well done
          Rest from thy lov'd employ;
          The battle fought - the victory won;
          Enter thy Master's joy."

          H.C. (Howell Cobb)
          Perry, April 26, 1859

          From the time he joined the church, he was a zealous, firm, pious, active and laborious Christian, positive in his opinions, and ardent in his love to his God and church, and to its doctrines and teachings. As a preacher, he possessed rare faculties -- the acuteness of the theologian, and the ardor and eloquence of the revivalist. He left his impress for good on every community in which he ever lived. He was remarkably successful, both in vindicating the doctrines of his church and bringing the rebellious to the feet of their Saviour. In his death the church and community have suffered a great loss. For the last three years of his life he was severely afflicted, having received an injury from a horse. But even in his affliction and decrepitude, he most clearly displayed the energy of the unconquerable Christian; for when not able to stand up without leaning on his crutches, he would preach with the clearness and unction of his former days. But about two weeks before his death, he was assisted to go in a carriage to church, two and a half miles from home, and he preached with ardor and unction for about one hour, all the time 'leaning upon his staff,' like old Jacob, when blessing his children for the last time. Death had no terrors for him; Jordan was not in his way to the promised land so long looked for; for as Joshua of old led his people to the earthly Canaan and dry land, so the
    Captain of his salvation led him through the wave, and he feared no evil. He died in peace.

    Will, Source: Ragan Pruitt -
    GEORGIA
    TERRELL COUNTY In the name of God, Amen.

          I, William Bryan, of the County and State aforesaid, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, and being desirous of disposing of my worldly affairs while I have strength so to do, do make and publish this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all wills by me at any time heretofore made.
          And first I commit my soul to God who gave it, and my body I desire buried in a decent and Christian like manner.
          I direct that my effects of every kind left at my death, both real and personal, go into the hands of my Executrix hereinafter named, to be managed and controlled by her, and kept together by her, until my youngest child (Charley) now about nine years of age, arrives at the age of twenty-one years; and out of the proceeds arising from my estate, I want my family maintained and my minor children educated to such extent, and in such way as my Executrix hereinafter named may think proper; and, when my youngest child arrives at age, I want my property divided equally between my children, my wife taking a child's part. If, however, at any time, it should become admissible, in the opinion of my Executrix hereinafter named to sell and dispose of any of the property, either real or personal, left by me, then she may do so, either at public or private sale as she may think best, and reinvest the proceeds thereof in other property of like kind, and manage and control the same in like manner.
          I direct that my share and interest in the Estate of my deceased father be paid over to my Executrix hereinafter named, and that with it, and the proceeds arising from my Estate, if necessary, she pay as soon as possible all of my just debts, and the remainder, if any, she will use or invest in the interest and for the benefit of my Estate, first paying, should there be enough, to Moses R. Bryan, my oldest son, and to Viola Houser, my daughter, One hundred dollars apiece. This one hundred dollars apiece last named is not to be paid out of the proceeds of the crop of Eighteen hundred and seventy seven.
          I direct that, in the event of the death or intermarriage of my wife before the majority of my youngest son (Charley), my estate be then equally be equally divided between my children, my wife taking a child's part.
