Inscription:
Major General Thomas Brown, Departed this life on the 24th of November A. D. 1814 in the 67th year of his age. This Memorial is a tribute of affection and respect by his widow and children.
Last Edited: 10 Nov 2018
  • Biography*: On September 9, 1775, the NC Provincial Congress appointed Thomas Brown as a Lt. Colonel under Col. Thomas Robeson, Jr. in the Bladen County Regiment of Militia. Lt. Col. Thomas Brown was with his regiment at the battle of Moore's Creek Bridge on February 27, 1776.
On May 3, 1776, the NC General Assembly created two special regiments of Militia in anticipation of a British invasion of North Carolina that never materialized. Soon thereafter, they appointed Thomas Brown as Colonel/ Commandant over the 1st Battalion of Militia, which included 750 men from the Wilmington District and the New Bern District. This unit was assigned to Brig. Gen. John Alexander Lillington and primarily stationed at Wilmington. Several sources assert that Col. Thomas Brown led this unit at the battle of Fort Moultrie, SC on June 28, 1776, but this Author has not been able to corroborate the information. This special regiment was disbanded on August 13, 1776 and sent home. On his way home, Brig. Gen. Lillington sent him orders to quell a Loyalist uprising in Bladen County.
Thomas Brown returned to active duty as a Lt. Colonel in the Bladen County Regiment of Militia.
In November of 1778, Thomas Brown was promoted to second Colonel, alongside Col. Thomas Robeson, Jr. in the Bladen County Regiment of Militia. He retained this position until May 15, 1782, when he resigned his commission.
Col. Thomas Brown led the Bladen County Regiment of Militia at the battles of Bear Swamp, SC (10/30/1780); Heron's Bridge (1/30/1781), where he was badly wounded; and at Tory Hole (8/27/1781).
One source asserts that Col. Thomas Brown was at the battle of Guilford Court House on March 15, 1781, but this Author has found no corroborating evidence thereof.
Col. Thomas Brown was allegedly captured in June of 1781 by the British and held in Wilmington until November 13, 1781, when the enemy finally evacuated the town and left North Carolina for good. They simply left all of their prisoners behind as they marched out of the town and boarded their troop ships. This Author tends to think that his capture was in September or October and not June as most sources assert.
After the war, Thomas Brown was a Major General in the NC State Militia, and was elected to the NC Senate in 1785, 1786, and 1788.
Thomas Brown was born on August 17, 1747, the son of George Brown and Elizabeth Bright. Thomas Brown first married Sarah Bartram in 1775, and they had one daughter - Elizabeth - both dying within five years. He married a second time to Lucy Bradley on January 13, 1780 in Wilmington, NC, and they had six known children - Mary, Arthur, Thomas B., John B, unnamed infant, and Lucy A. He died on November 24, 1814 at his residence - "Ashwood" - in Bladen County, NC.
  • Birth*: Maj. Gen. Thomas Brown was born in 1747 at Bladen County, NC.
  • Marriage*: He married Sarah Bartram, daughter of Col. William Bartram , Jr. and Elizabeth Lock.
  • Marriage*: Maj. Gen. Thomas Brown married Lucy Bradley on 15 Jan 1780 at New Hanover County, NC.

  • Biography*: Obituary:
In this place, on the evening of the 13th inst. at the house of Judge Nash, Master Charles P. Owen, only son of Governor Owen, of Bladen, aged about fourteen years. The deceased was a student of the Hillsborough Academy, an amiable and interesting lad, whose gentle, yet manly character and deportment had endeared him alike to his teachers and his fellow students. His afflicted parents, who had been informed, by express, of his illness, had the melancholy satisfaction of arriving in time to hear one conscious word, receive one affectionate embrace, and close his dying eyes. Many-many are the hearts that bleed in sympathy with theirs. Hillsboro' Rec. -Published in Raleigh Register and North-Carolina Gazette (Raleigh, North Carolina), Tuesday, August 25, 1835, p. 3.
