Most of her growing up years were spent in Arden, WV at the home called Rocky Maede which meant Rocky Meadows. Often she told how she "had to be the boy of the family" to help her father with the outside chores on the farm because her sister Lee helped mother indoors. She remembered that she was wearing her sister's dress for her baptism and how Lee cried when the water dripped on her dress. She developed a strong faith in God at an early age. Grandfather Thatcher was helping her learn to pray the Lord's prayer. When she came to the phrase, "Give us this day our daily bread", Eleanor remembered how she paused and added, "And I like jelly on my bread". The Thatcher girls often walked to school in Arden, WV unless the snow drifts were too high. Then, their father would take them on horseback. Sometimes, they rode in a cart pulled by the pony, named Bess. She loved and idolized her first teacher, Miss Kate Brady, who showed special attention to her because she was so young. The attractive brown-eyed, auburn haired little girl grew in "wisdow and in stature and in favor with God and humans". When quite young, she travelled with her Aunt Nonie to Atlanta, GA and was there during the "great fire of Atlanta". Often she told how her poodle dog burned up in the fire. A sad, unique experience with death at such an early age. Nonie also took her to New York City on another trip.

  On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, Mary Catherine "Irish" O'Rourke, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away at the age of 85 surrounded at home by her husband, seven children, spouses, grandchildren, and dear friends.
  
  Mary Catherine was born on August 24, 1936 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Meta and Joseph Gleason. She learned to pilot aircraft as a young woman in 1953, operated an emergency rescue Civil Air Patrol ham radio from home, and remained adventurous throughout her life including reigniting her passion for flying at age 65 and skydiving at age 70.
  
  On July 27, 1957, she was married to Bernard Patrick (Pat) O'Rourke. Together they raised seven children: Mike, Maggie, Eileen, Danny, Shawn, Bridget, and Colleen. They also had 17 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Irish led a life-long example of 'blessed are the peacemakers'. There was always room at her table for one more.
