From "The Robesonian," Lumberton, NC, 11 October 1897:

    LT. WELLINGTON WISHART DEAD

LT. Wellington Wishart died Oct 9th, 1897, at his home near Lumberton, in this county. He was nearly 65 years of age and married Delany Meares in September 1858.

He was a Democrat of Democrats all the days of his life. LT. Wishart was Captain of the Militia in his district before the war, and entered the Confederate Army in April 1861, as Second Lieutenant of R.M. Norment's company, afterwards Company A, in the 46th NC Regiment (Inf), Cook's Brigade. And no more gallant brigade was in the Army of Northern Virginia, no better LT. was in that brigade and no company was superior to Company A in that regiment, and no officer in that company excelled LT. Wishart in faithfulness, fidelity and valor. His record in that army was such that if deeds on earth can entitle one to enter the pearly gates of heaven, when his pure soul appeared there "the recording angel dropped a tear upon his faults and blotted them out forever".

But he did not rely upon his own good deeds or upon his strong will, but upon the promises of One whose promises never fail, upon Him, "who marks the sparrows fall, who calms the elemental war, whose mantle is yon boundless sky". For he joined the Baptist Church at Antioch at the age of 18 and remained a member of that church until 1868, when he had his membership removed to the Baptist Church at Lumberton, of which church he was a member at the time of his death; and as a member you would not have to go to the church books to find out the fact, but would be firmly convinced of it by his daily walk and conversation.

He was a true and loving husband, a kind and affectionate father and a sincere friend, and I doubt that he had an enemy in the world, and if he did, it was, I think, without just cause. He was an honest man and as Pope has truly said, "An honest man is the noblest work of God". I have spoken truthfully, and what more could I say, for what higher perfection can a man reach than being the noblest work of God?

What better advice could I give to his seven children, now in gloom and sorrow, than to walk in the footsteps of thy father? And to them and his wife, now in agony and tears, I would also say: ".....And angels lead him to those bowers, Where endless pleasures, virtues deeds repay".

  • Biography*: Occupation: Journalist

Walter Seaman "Mr. C" Wishart, 91, one of Lumberton's oldest and most beloved citizens, died at his home in the Clinton apartments, on December 3, 1950, after an illness he had battled since last August.

Mr. Wishart was born in Wishart's Township on July 17, 1859. He began work at The Robesonian in 1877. He was assigned to the composing room at age 18, and continued in that work for some time. He later went to Wilmington where he was employed by the S.A.L. and A.C.L. Railroad Companies.

Upon his return to Lumberton he was advance agent for the Williams Stock Co, and was manager of the Lumberton Opera House (the building is now Lamb's Tourist Home), bringing many operas to Lumberton. He opened and operated the Pastime theatre in 1910, the first theatre in Lumberton, which was located next to Lumberton Drug Store. He also opened theatres in Hamlet, Laurinburg, Whiteville, Red Springs, and Bennettsville and Dillon, S. C., and continued in the theatre business until his retirement at the age of 80.

Mr. Wishart was married to Miss Willie D Reaves of Lumberton, on December 21, 1882. Mr. Wishart was active until a year or so ago, and possessed a wonderful memory. He perhaps could tell more exact dates from memory of happenings in Lumberton, than any other person. He was quiet adn unassuming, and had a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wellingon Wishart and Delaney Meares-Wishart; his wife, Willie D Reaves-Wishart.

Mr. Wishart was survived by his two daughters, Mr. J. P. Townsend and Miss Elizabeth Wishart; one brother, John H. Wishart; and one sister, Mrs. Ira J. Flowers; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Requiem Mass will be held at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, of which he had been a loyal member for many years with Father Michael in charge. Interment will be in Meadowbrook Cemetery, Lumberton, North Carolina.

  • Biography*: ELIZABETH WISHART

The inscription on Susan WISHART'S gravestone does not identify her by name, but only as "The Wife of W.B. Bowden".

The following was copied from an original letter sent from Susan
WISHART, of Lumberton, NC, to her first cousin, Giles Eli WISHART of Rockingham, NC, 18 July 1883. Susan was 18 years old at the time:

Lumberton, NC, July the 18th, 1883
to Mr. Giles E. Wishart, Rockingham

    Dear Cousin,
A few words to you and this leaves us all well truly, hoping these few lines may find you the same. Nothing much to write you. I am just from Antioch.
(Note: The small community of Antioch, on the outskirts of Lumberton, was the site of the Wishart family farms). Every thing is running smooth down there I believe. Crops are looking good in our neighborhood. We haven't heard from father (Wellington Wishart) in over two weeks. I saw Clifton and Jamie Wishart today at Antioch, they are two fine looking boys. (Note: Clifton and Jamie,
Susan's first cousins, were sons of Col. Francis Marion Wishart who was murdered in 1872 in a rural area of Richmond County, NC, while in pursuit of the outlaw Lowry gang). I saw Zach and Kit Taylor today, they were both well and the children. (Note: Refers to Leticha Ann Wishart, daughter of Giles Wishart, and Leticha's husband, Zachariah Taylor. Leticha and Susan were first cousins, once removed).

Note: The remainder of the page was missing, but on a second page was the following poem Giles had requested from his cousin, Susan.

    "Waiting My Darling for Thee"

"I've been waiting for more than an hour, love,
Yes, waiting and watching for thee,
While hoping and praying you'ld come, love,
and keep true your promise to me.
For you told me you'ld meet me this evening,
and listen to what I've to say.
For to speak the plain truth, I am certain,
I can't tell you all in one day."

"By the lilies that float down the river,
By the cowslips that grow on the beds,
By the roses that bloom in the forests,
I'm waiting my darling, for thee,
    I'm waiting, yes, waiting,
I'm waiting my darling, for thee,
    I'm waiting, yes, waiting,
I'm waiting my darling, for thee."

"For more than a year I have waited,
That promise from you to receive,
So surely you'll not break your word, love
and leave me your absence to grieve.
So I'll watch and I'll wait here still longer,
In hope of your coming this way,
When the dim, misty veil of the twilight
Has shut out the brightness of day."

    J. H. WISHART, SR., 89, WAS LONG ILL.

Lumberton's Senior Citizen Reaches End of a Full Life.

    J. H. Wishart, Sr., often called "grand old man of marketing," died about 3:10 p.m. Monday in Robeson Memorial Hospital after a long period of ill health. He was 89.

The venerable business leader saw the birth of the Lumberton tobacco market in 1898 as a young man, and for many years was an active participant in its operation. During his day as combination office manager, weigh master and clip-man, a tobacco farmer said, "There is not a man in Robeson County I would rather weigh my tobacco." His career has followed that pattern.

John Howard Wishart was a native and life long resident of Lumberton, and at his death was known as the oldest white man in this city. His career was varied, as it is characteristic of community leaders, and for 34 years he was a grocery merchant, operating city's outstanding store where Sellers is now located.

Among his other activities were included his service as postmaster of the city, a member of the city board of commissioners, and a member of th board of education. A life long member of the Presbyterian Church, he was a ruling elder in the local institution.

His survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Colin Campbell and Miss Janie K. Wishart of Lumberton; two sons, R. W. Wishart and John Wishart, Jr., of Lumberton; two grandchildren, John W. Campbell Jr., of Lumberton and Mrs. Floyd Russell of Cynthiania, Ky; three great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Ira Flowers of Lumberton.

The funeral is being conducted in First Presbyterian Church at 4 p. m. today by the pastor, Dr. R. F. Sloop. Burial will be in the Meadowbrook Cemetery.

  • Biography*: Cpl. US Army, 28 May 1918/28 June 1919. Served in France with MG Co, 323d Inf, 81st Div (AEF), SN 2992049. Participated in campaigns in the Meuse Argonne and St. Die Sector. Was inducted from Wilmington, NC. Listed in the census of 1900 as living at home with his mother in Olyphant, Lackawanna County, PA. His occupation at age 12 is shown as "printer" leading to the conclusion that he may have been apprenticed. He opened a newspaper and printing shop in Red Springs, NC in the early thirties, however the business failed in 1933. It appears that the middle name, "Lake", was given to Leland in honor of Rev. Lot Lake, who was for many years the Pastor of the First Welsh Congregational Church, Scranton, where the family was active until the death of Leland's mother, Elvira, in 1938. No other family member is known to be named "Lake". Leland's address, listed on the birth certificate of his son Richard, born in 1927, was 644 Nth. Hyde Park Ave., Scranton, PA.

At the time of the 1930 US Census (ED 65-26, sheet 10-A, April 7), Leland, age 41; Emma, age 32; Leland Jr., age 4 1/2; Richard, age 3, were living at 1801 Nun Street in Wilmington, in a home Leleand was buying. Leland was listed as a linotype operator for a local printing company.
