GEN. ELI WISHART SUCCUMBS AT 72.
Francis Eli Wishart, 72, retired Brigadier General who had served in two World Wars, died here early Sunday after six months of illness with leukemia.
Funeral services were scheduled for 3 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church with Dr. A. Warren Huyck officiating. Burial takes place in Meadowbrook Cemetery.
As the long time commander of a National Gurard unit here, Wishart was one of the most widely known military men in the area. A native of Robeson County, he attended Oak Ridge Military Academy, joined the infantry in World War I as a private, and was commissioned as a member of the first class to complete Officers Training School at Fort Ogletrorpe, Ga.
Between World Wars, "Captain Eli" Commanded Battery B, a Coast Guard Artillery. This National Guard Unit was sent to Trinidad on active duty in World War II. After two years there Wishart, by then a Colonel, served for a year in Europe as an Artillery Officer with the 18th Airborne Corps.
In 1946, after 27 years of military service, he retired with the rank of Brigadier General.
Gen. Wishart was a Deacon of the First Baptist Church, a past commander of the American Legion Post, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a Mason (he received his 50 year Mason Pin last fall), and a Sojourner (member of the Masonic Military Order).
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hallie Freeman Wishart; a son, Captain Francis E. Wishart Jr., of Fort Jackson, S. C., a daughter, Miss Betty Rose Wishart, a student at Queens College, Charlotte, a sister, Mrs. Kenneth Gregg of Lumberton, a brother, J. Empie Wishart of Lumberton; and his stepmother, Mrs. Jessie Wishart of Lumberton.
General Wishart's favorite charity and church projects were Boys Home at Lake Waccamaw, the Durham Memorial Building in Lumberton, and Hebron Colony.
