• Biography*: Samuel and Margaret were married for 58 years. Margaret had her first child, Emily, when she was 21 years of age and her last child, Fred, when she was 47. She always wanted a large family to continue "good stock" in the South. Throughout her married life her grandchildren were always welcomed and loved but required to do for themselves and help with some of the chores.
  Margaret was a young girl during the Civil War. She enjoyed parties and dances despite the war, and often told of her varied schemes to get her father's permission to attend such events. One time she was with a young man on her way to get married, but changed her mind at the last minute and persuaded him to take her home. She met and married Samuel soon after he returned from the war. They continued to develop as individuals but always worked together and helped each other.
  At the beginning of their marriage they lived in an old jail in Lexington, North Carolina, with walls 27 inches thick. It was later renovated by a doctor for an office and Dr. Cranford, an eye specialist, still has offices there. Margaret and Samuel often spoke of the churches and communities of Fair Grove and Mt. Pleasant. When they first moved to High Point, a boarder, Ed Hunt, lived with them. He later married their second daughter, Flora.
  When a young woman, Margaret or "Hass" attended a public hanging. She could feel the festive reaction of the crowd with their picnic lunches, but her sympathy was for the dying man and against public hangings.
  She was a great admirer of Tennyson and Matthew Arnold and knew so many stories or thoughts in their poems. She read while her babies nursed and while they took a nap in her arms. Each family member helped with a younger brother or sister.
  She helped her neighbors with their children also and often waited for a doctor with the wife in labor or acted as a midwife in the birth of a child.
  When Joseph, my father, died at the age of 44, Grandma was with my mother, Minnie, when she received the news of his death. Mother fainted and they laid her on the feather bed. Almost immediately, Grandma observed, "My God, Minnie is pregnant." Her advice to us, her grandchildren, was to help our mother.
  Grandmother helped too. She enjoyed singing songs, telling stories, and having peanuts and preserves for the grandchildren. She had a love for music and would keep us busy winding the record player to listen and show us dance steps that she knew as a girl. She would sit, raise her long skirt a little, and move her feet to the music.
  My sister, Vera, remembers Grandmother singing this song to the grandchildren:
  "Oh, the stormy seas how she flows, flows, flows
  The raging winds how they blow, blow, blow
  We poor sailors are looking out for day
  As the lamp burns dimly down below, below."
  
  In these ways, Grandma shared with her entire family, from the oldest child, Emily Delilah Clinard (1867-1938) to her youngest child, Fred Hamner Clinard (1893- ), from her oldest grandchild, Lucien McLean Perry (born 1895) to her youngest grandchild, Clarice Evelyn Clinard Moorefield (born 1930, three years after Grandmother's death). The births of her children spanned 26 years and those of her grandchildren, 35 years. Also, she shared her faith.
  Grandmother felt it imperative that her large family be reared in the church and taught love and responsibility for each other, a pride in heritage, a desire for knowledge, a devotion to the community, and a sense of being helpful. For this our family owes her much in appreciation, awareness and perception.
