Byrnville Cemetery, Jackson Township, Harrison County, IN.
    By Ruth Binkley
    Corydon, IN
    August 1970

Burial grounds of Charles Leason BYRN and Temple Coleman BYRN Families, who migrated to Indiana in 1806 and 1809 respectively. They were born in Rowan Co., NC, sons of Charles and Ann Byrn who lived near Salisbury, NC. They traveled by covered wagons via Flower and Cumberland Gaps and crossed the Ohio Falls by flatboat. They cut the road as they came during a 5 week trip. Leason was 29 and Temple was 30 years old when they came. Charles Leason BYRN was born in 1777. His wife, Anna CLODFELTER came with him from North Carolina. There were no more records of her birth, death or burial place available. Since the BYRN Pioneer Cemetery is on Leason's farm, it is no doubt the burial place of him and his wife Ann, and perhaps as many as 20 or more BYRN family members in unmarked graves.
The BYRN Pioneer Cemetery is located ½ miles north of Brynville on the high east bank of Corn Creek. Leason's mill site is in the flat below the cemetery. His cabin stood 1/5 mile north of the mill, beyond the cemetery, on the ridge above the big spring. No burials were made here until sometime after 1806. The last grave on record in this old cemetery is that of Temple Cole (Known as Rogers). He was born Nov. 27, 1809 and died Sept 19, 1885. Leason's brother, Temple buried his first wife, Sarah in the Pioneer Cemetery. She came with her husband from North Carolina. She was of English
Ancestry (while the BYRN'S were Irish from Dublin Ireland, Her father-in-law having come from there) Her grave stone reads: Sarah BYRN, Born Feb 22, 1796 and died October 14, 1823. Age 38 yrs, 7 months and 22 days. The consort of T.C.Byrn, Sr. During the Indian Wars of 1811 she told of how she found a large snake in the blankets one night as she slept with the children in a sink hole but she "feared the snakes in the sink holes less than the Indians." Her husband, Temple and Leason fought in the Battle of Tippicanoe, where Leason was wounded.
After Sarah BROOKS (Sally) BYRN'S death at age 37, Temple married Elizabeth VAN FOSSEN. In 1837 he had a town of Byrnville laid out on his land, north of the Cave Spring and his cabin site, included the lots where his eldest son, Joel BYRN had built his cabin in 1832.
In 1846 Temple set aside at the southwest corner of town for the Brynville Cemetery when Joel's daughter, Emily BYRN, died young. His granddaughter was the first person buried in the new cemetery. After that date, few families continued to bury in the Pioneer Cemetery and the Byrnville Cemetery has continued in use to the
present day for the whole community.
Temple Cole BYRN'S stone stands in the Byrnville Cemetery. It reads: born 1778 and died June 4,1857 78 yrs., 8 months and 26 days. (Mason) A field stone lays on either side of his marker. No doubt one is for his second wife, Elizabeth, as his first wife,
Sallie is in the old cemetery. When Temple rode his covered wagon into Leason's barnlot, he was playing his fiddle. Leason's remark on seeing his brother in this distant country after 3 years absence was "I came a thousand miles to get away from that fiddle but it followed me".
A camp of Delaware Indians lived up the hollow from Leason's place until the government moved them out about 1812. Some Indians, "gypsies", passed through. The baby died and they buried it in the BYRN Cemetery and planted a cedar tree to mark the grave. There are conflicting stories as to which cemetery has the Indian baby as a big Cedar Tree grew in both of them.
Beside the four members of the BYRN Family already mentioned, as buried in the Pioneer Cemetery, there are stone markers for; Temple C. BYRN, Jr. born in Rowan Co, NC born 12-30-1805 and died 7-17-1843, Aged 37 yrs, 6 months & 17 days. His wife Elizabeth SLAUGHTERBACK may be in an unmarked grave beside him. Sarah (BELL) BYRN, wife of T C BYRN. Dec 27,1815 to Mar 26, 1881
Mary Alice, dau of T C and S. BYRN, Jan 1,1818 Aged 5 yrs, 11 mns, 28 da.
Norbin BYRN, child of T C and S BYRN.
Dudley BYRN, child of T C and S BYRN
Netta Belle BYRN. Drowned in a tub of water when baby
Charles Leason BYRN (Suter) b. 1803 in Rowan Co.,NC Died 8-8-1883. Son of Charles Leason and Ann CLODFELTER. . "Suter" had three wives. Emeline EVILSIZER**Nancy KENOYER, Nancy (BOWEN) HAZZARD. Forty years ago, "Suter" BYRN had these
stones for his wives and children; Cina, Douglas, and Grant BYRN. Now the markings have been lost.
In the Byrnville Cemetery we find broken gravestones, field stones, and probably many unknown graves with no stones, but the names of all those early generations of the BYRN Family have been
recorded and preserved for future generations by the fine work of my high school history teacher, Gordon SAPPENFIELD, now deceased. I have a copy of his record of the BYRN Family Tree which I Prize highly. There are other copies among interested members of the BYRN family. Temple C. BYRN, the pioneer, was my ancestor 5 generations ago.

  • Biography*: Lived near New Ross, IN.

Saturday Evening Journal, November 19, 1881

Matthias Clodfelter, died at his home in New Ross on Wednesday night, November 9, of congestion. The deceased was born in Davidson county, North Carolina, December 2, 1817, of German parentage. At the age of 13 he removed with his parents to Putnam county, this state, where shortly after, his father died, leaving upon him the care of supporting the younger members of the family. In his twenty-first year he was married to Mary M. Sayles, with whom he lived in happy companionship until his death. For many years he was miller at the old Sutherlin mill. Some years after his marriage he removed to Ripley township, in Montgomery county, Indiana, and purchased a small tract of land in the woods, and erected a log cabin, where he subsequently carved a good farm and made a beautiful home. In 1872 he removed to the village of Alamo, and for some time engaged in the grocery business, after which he returned to his farm, from whence he moved to New Ross, where he lived until the time of his death. He was the father of six boys and seven girls. Three boys and all the girls lived to the age of maturity and received at his hand a liberal education. He was at an early date a warm friend to the common school system, and served four terms as trustee of his township. He was thirteen years Justice of the Peace, and rarely ever , were his decisions reversed by a higher court. He was a consistent member of the Universalist church and never wandered from his cherished faith. He lived by his faith and died by it. To him, his faith was not a mere assent to creed, but a practical power for a good and sweet voice within, commanding love, whispering peace and assuring hope. He leaves behind a bereaved companion and sorrowing household who deplore their loss and sacredly cherish his memory; and many friends and acquaintances who feel that from among them a good man is gone. In accordance with his desire, expressed while living, he was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery at Crawfordsville.
  • Birth*: Matthias was born on 2 Dec 1817 at Rowan County, NC.
  • Marriage*: He married Mary Magdeline Saylor, daughter of William Saylor and Katherine Keller, on 24 Jun 1838 at Putnam County, IN.
  • Death*: Matthias died on 9 Nov 1881 at New Ross, Montgomery County, IN, at age 63.
  • Burial*: His body was buried at Crawfordsville, IN. Oak Hill Cemetery.

  • Biography*: Name Source - Barbara Wouters, Indiv. #106520.

1831. John was first elected to the NC state legislature, as a representative.

1842. John served five terms as Senator between 1842 and 1860.

He was the founder of Thomasville, Davidson County, NC in 1852. He had bought 1,200 acres of land at $5 an acre. The town was named from the combined names of John Thomas and his friend Dr. Henry Rounsaville.

Through one man’s faith and courage a town was built in 1852 along the tracks of a railroad then under construction. The wheel of Destiny had made a significant turn more than three decades earlier when it brought John W. Thomas to the wooded settlement known as Fair Grove. Where is now Cedar Lodge, he built a home for his wife, who was Mary Lambeth, the daughter of Moses Lambeth.

John W. Thomas represented the county in the North Carolina General Assembly in 1831 and was a member of the State Senate in 1842, where he became vitally interested in internal improvements. In 1848, he was again a State Senator and fought vigorously to pass the North Carolina Railroad Bill. After the legislation was enacted he sold more railroad stock in Davidson County than was sold in any other county in the state and subscribed for as much stock personally as any man in North Carolina.

John W. Thomas and his neighbors (Shadrack Lambeth, Valentine Hoover, Charles Mock and others) tried unsuccessfully to secure the route to the railroad through Fair Grove. Undaunted by failure, he purchased land on the adopted route and set to work to build a town. He contracted to build three sections of the road, more distance than that built by any other contractor in the Third District. He built cabins for workmen, a large store to supply their needs, moved in a steam saw mill and also had a gristmill using the same power. His son, L.L. Thomas, built a three-story hotel. Dr. H.E. Rounsaville and others soon built residences.

In November, 1855, a large celebration marked the completion of the railroad to Thomasville, the first through train from Goldsboro to Charlotte passing the following January 30th.

In 1856, John W. Thomas bought Glen Anna Female Seminary and built for it a large brick building on the east side of the village, facing the railroad from the north, the east end today of Ragan Knitting Company’s plant. The next year C.M. and G. Lines moved their leather business to Thomasville from Bush Hill (Archdale) and began manufacturing shoes south of the railroad, opposite the college. A little distance east of the shoe factory Robert Gray had set up his brickyard where he made brick used in building Trinity College and also the new Glen Anna Seminary. He was the contractor for constructing both these important buildings. Soon Jesse Shelly came from Jamestown and set up a second shoe factory.

Thomasville During the Reconstruction Days of 1865---1876
By Mrs. George Thompson, Grand-daughter of the Founder of the Town
A Paper Read Before the Briarfield Chapter of the U. D. C., May 10, 1921

First, before I tell you of the years between 1865-1876, let me go back and tell you of some of the incidents of the founding of the town that my father and, only this past winter just a few weeks before his death, my uncle, Ped Thomas, told me, for I am sure they will interest you, the daughters of these our forefathers.
In 1838 John W. Thomas, my grandfather, the founder of the town, bought a tract of 1500 acres from a Mr. Goldsberry, paying for this land a four-horse load of bacon. This property began at the Elliott homeplace, which is the oldest house in town, and extended to the present site of the Thomasville Chair Company office building.
In 1844 or 1845 the English government needed copper very badly, copper selling then for 25 cents a pound, so several representatives were sent to this country to purchase copper mines. Two of these gentlemen came to North Carolina to see his excellency, Governor John M. Morehead. The governor knew of the copper mines near here, on the present Cedar Lodge Farm where my grandfather then lived, so he made the trip here through the country in his fine state carriage, bringing these two English gentlemen with him.
My grandfather agreed to sell them the mines for the sum of $30,000, a third of which they paid down, but he was to retain the title to the land until the full amount was paid. The Englishmen, much pleased with the transaction, returned to England, but hardly had they reached there when copper fell to 10 cents a pound. My grandfather never heard from them again.
With this money he bought more land here, enlarging the tract to a mile square, making this last purchase from Johnathan Winston. But he continued to live on his farm for a number of years, and worked the copper and gold mines thereon. He weighed over two hundred pounds, and one of his favorite stories was the fact that he mined more than twice his weight in gold during his lifetime. His sons helped him, and they, my uncles, use an unknown date to tell of how they worked at the “chillie-mill” until they would almost drop from sheer exhaustion. This mill operated somewhat like the molasses-grinder, a mule going round and round to turn it.
The mines, which lie about two miles from town later came to be known as the Eureka Mines, and some 45 years ago a thousand hands worked them. Also a smelting works, one of the town’s chief industries at that time, was operated where the Amazon Mill now stands. But the owners of the mines went to such an expense for machinery and general operation that no money was ever made out of the project.
But I must hurry on. Later John W. Thomas built a home here, which was called in those days “The Mansion,” and moved his large family here. He was responsible for the North Carolina railway coming through here, and himself supervised the building of the road-bed in this section of the state.
But I am to tell you of the years from 1865 to 1876, the reconstruction days following the Civil War.
Thomasville, in the year 1865, was a small village. The war had given her a setback, as all the able bodied men had to go, but things again began to move on, nor was Cupid idle, and attending to his business soon many weddings came off. The first couple was Miss Bettie Carmalt and A. L. Grimes, then Miss Jennie Thomas and J. T. Cramer, Miss Eliza Shelly and P. C. Thomas, Miss Della Kennedy and Henry Newby, Miss Jennie Loftin and Cap. Sumner, and many more later.
The female college was under Prof. L. W. Andrews, who had a good school for several years. His brother, Prof. C. C. Andrews, then took up the work, and had a splendid school quite a while. The postoffice [sic] was in the J. W. Thomas store with Ed McCutchin postmaster. He moved to Green H. Lee’s store, now Elliot’s store. Miss Augusta Cates was next appointed postmistress and moved the office to the cottage next to M. E. church. Another enterprise was J. W. Jones’ tan yard, must back of his home, where leather was made for the shoe shops.
A very eccentric old man named Nance had a hat shop back of Elliot’s. He made men’s felt hats and reblocked hats. The children shunned him at all times. He wore a little old beaver and long curls on both sides of his face.
In front of the college a flour mill owned by J. W. Thomas made splendid flour. Mr. Burrel Lambeth was the miller and took care that everybody got flour from their own wheat.
The Lines Shoe Shop was the largest business in town and furnished work for a great many men and girls. They made many kinds of shoes, especially children’s copper toes.
A tobacco factory owned by the Pinnix Bros. was near the depot. They made plug tobacco and worked negroes. Their singing is remembered by the older people.
Mr. John McRary, now of Lexington, was the undertaker and furniture dealer, later selling out to Mr. William Foster, who enlarged the business and made good as the town grew.
Another enterprise was a government still run by Mr. Cramer with Mr. Ped Thomas, guager; this did not exist long.
May 14, 1871, the town lost her founder, Mr. John Thomas, one of the greatest losses the town has ever had. He was head of everything and helped build up this beautiful town, the pride of his life. His was the largest funeral ever held here. Hundreds of people from many parts of the state came to pay their respects to this honored man. His old slaves stood with bowed heads, anxious to take the last look at their old master. Drs. Reid and Craven conducted the services from the Methodist church. D. Thomas, administrator of his father’s estate, sold the college to Prof. H. W. Reinhart, gave the ground for the cemetery and two acres for the depot.
Major Hambrick had a studio on Salem Street and made those beautiful daguerreotypes in cases, also the tin types, as they were called.
Soon after the war, for the protection of women, children, and property the Ku Klux Klan was organized in town with Capt. Tom Moore as first captain. These men bound by oath to protect, at any cost, made many an indolent fellow work and made respectable citizens out of them.
Two doctors settled here, Rounsaville and Thomas, and both had a large practice. Dr. Thomas worked for 54 years and many of the older people call him “the Old Doctor” yet.
Mr. Joe Delapp was the butcher. He sold the best cuts of steak at 7 and 8 cents per pound; later when he asked 10 cents it was considered outrageous. Frying chickens sold for 10 and 12 1-2 cents apiece. Messrs. Foulckt and Hoffman had the first market. They lived at Glen Anna.
Many houses began to be built all over town. On Randolph Street 5 houses stood from the Baptist church to Glen Anna. They were the homes of Mr. Quilla Jones, Capt. Harris, Mr. Westmoreland and Mr. Clinton Johnson. On Fisher Ferry only Evan Welborn’s house, now Skiles Heights, stood. On Salem Street, west side, were the studio, shoe shop, and Major Hanner and Whitaker’s homes. On the east side, Rev. J. W. Lewis’, Mrs. McCutchen’s and Major Hambrick’s. On Main Street, south side, there were 12 residences and one store; on North Main 15 residences and one store.
The Methodist church had as preachers during these year, Rev. D. R. Bruton, D. Reid, Revs. C. M. Pepper and P. L. Hermon; the Presbyterian, Mr. Dalton, of High Point; the Baptist, Revs. John Jordon and J. B. Richardson.
The Masons held their meetings in their lodge room in P. C. Thomas’ residence until the present building was erected.
The young folks enjoyed life very much, candy stews, horse-back riding and dancing being their pastimes in those days.
In 1869 the total eclipse of the sun came, alarming the people very much, the sun being dark for half an hour, then coming out brighter than every, to the delight of the colored folks especially.
