An article reads as follows - Robert Wade (Bob) Bowers, 57, of 205 Burler Street, a former football coach and scoutmaster, died Thursday night at Lexington Memorial Hospital after an illness of 15 months. He had cancer. The funeral will be a 4PM Sunday at First Lutheran Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. John Misenheimer officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Mr. Bowers was born in Davidson County in 1924 to Edward George and Mollie Conrad Bowers and was employed as a draftsman for architect Paul Briggs. Prior to his last position, he had held many jobs with the City of Lexington, working as a policeman, a draftsman for the engineering department, and as former director for the recreation department. He also had been active in community work, serving as scoutmaster of Troop 213 of First Lutheran Church, a former football coach at Lexington Junior High School and photographer for the Lexington Senior High School Yellow Jackets. Surviving are a brother, Edward Bowers of 605 Robbins Street; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Pickett of 300 Westover Drive and Mrs. Arvan (Colleen) Hill of Highway 150; four half sisters, Mrs. F. R. Cain of Winston-Salem, Mrs. O. C. Sharpe of Salisbury, Mrs. Odis Younts of Holly Grove and Hazel Bowers of 519 East Center Street; four half brothers, Clyde H. Bowers of 620 West Center Street, Willie Bowers of 403 Westover Drive, John Conrad of Happy Hill Road and Casper Conrad of Hill Everhart Road.     Mr. Bowers was born April 20, 1923, in Davidson County, to George Edward Bowers and Molly Conrad Bowers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 8, Disabled American Veterans, and a member of Lutheran Men's Mission. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Allen Bowers on July 30, 2003, and several brothers and sisters.

    Surviving are daughters, Bonnie Mize, Frances Berrier and husband Larry and Mary Ellen Hinson and husband, Doody, all of Lexington; grandchildren, Pam Harris and husband, Dale, Marc Mize and wife, Angie, Emily Bryant and husband, Nathan, Laurie Berrier, and Debbie Hudson and husband, Scott; eight great-grandchildren; and brother, Willie Bowers.

    Chesley farmed for two years; when he lost money both years he decided that farming was not for him.
    During World War II, he worked in Baltimore, MD at the Rubiroid Plant making tar paper. Upon returning to North Carolina, he worked with a construction company building towers for power lines. He then worked for the V & CS railroad which ran between St. Pauls, Lumberton, and Elizabethtown, NC. In 1950, he took a job with the bridge department of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. He worked out of the Gillburg location until he retired in 1979.
    On January 3, 1994, he and wife Ernestene celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. A Golden Anniversary party hosted by their daughters and grandchildren was held in Harriet Baptist Church Fellowship Hall; approximately 75 guests attended this celebration. In October, 1994, Chesley celebrated his 80th birthday with a pig picking hosted by his daughters and their families.i.
