  When he was 16 years old he enlisted as a Private in the NC Troops to fight in the American Revolution. He was with the NC Troops, commanded by General Nathaniel Greene, when they crossed the Yadkin River, with the British General, Lord Cornwallis, in pursuit. A terrible storm prevented Lord Cornwallis from crossing at this point, and the delay helped General Greene's troops to regroup and move to Guilford Courthouse, the battle that was the turning point for the American troops. The battlefield in Rowan County (now Davidson County) where John Sowers fought is called York Hill.

  In 1829 he and his family went to southern IL, where his son Henry Sowers had gone in 1816 to found Sowersville Settlement in Pulaski County.

  Sowers, Texas was a small community located approximately 11 miles northwest of Dallas, Texas in what is known today as Irving, Texas. The Sowers Community was named after the early pioneer E. D. Sowers. There are still small reminders of this tiny community. Among them are an old cemetery known as Sowers Cemetery and a small stretch of road known as Sowers Road.
  
  SOWERS, TEXAS. Sowers was eleven miles northwest of Dallas in an area now in Irving in northwestern Dallas County. E. D. Sowers, believed to have settled in the area in 1848 and owner of the first store in the community, gave his name to the post office when it was established in 1881. At that time the community was sometimes called Sowers Store and had the store, a school, and two physicians. By 1884 the town had a population of seventy-five, a church, a school, a doctor, a blacksmith, a druggist, and two steam gristmill-cotton gins. The population rose to 121 before the removal of its post office in 1905 and remained steady throughout the 1930s. Three businesses were located in the community in 1936. The population was thirty in 1956.
