  For several years he lived on a farm northeast of Wheeler, IL and later went to Lincoln, IL where he worked in the Lincoln State School and Colony for 15 years.
  
  Alva and Myrtie Sowers started their married life in a log cabin one mile north of Gila, IL. In 1902, Alva bought 80 acres by the Slate Point Church and later bought 40 more acres, adjoining his 80 acres, from John Batman, Myrtie's brother. He built a house and out-building from the tall sycamore trees that stood on the land. Alva farmed and was constable and sheriff of N. Muddy townspoint. Myrtie raised guinea hens and white turkeys. She was Democratic committee-woman for that townspoint for a number of years.
  All three girls and Myrtie had smallpox, after which they had to fumigate the house, so, during that time they moved into the barn. They bought food from the huckster wagon.
  In 1930 Alva and Myrtie left the farm which they rented to a nephew of Alva's and moved to Wheeler, IL, where they operated a resturant and grocery store until the spring of 1933. They then moved to Lincoln, IL. In Lincoln they both worked at the Lincoln State School. Myrtie as cook, Alva as ward worker and later superintendent. After Myrtie's death Alva lived at the school until age 76, then spent his remaining years at his children's homes and finally a nursing home in Effingham, IL. [Written by Betty Garrison]
