  He was a carver of pierced tombstones unique to Davidson County, NC. He was called the "fraktur artist" because of his decorations influenced by the fraktur art found on the German taufscheine, the highly decorated birth certificates popular in the German communities in the early 1800s. He used such incised symbols as the tree-of-life, the star-flower, the heart, and the tulip. He occasionally used the pierced fylfot. He did not sign his tombstones, but the estate file of Peter Lopp includes the notation "Voucher No. 4, David Sowers, receipt for Tombstones $5.00." The Lopp headstone is one of David's finest with its pierced fylfot and beautiful fraktur-style writing. Tombstones attributed to David Sowers are found at Pilgrim, Beulah, Emanuel, and Bethany cemeteries. 1835. David Sowers, along with his wife, children, and parents, Valentine and Maria, and many of their family members migrated to Wallace, Fountain County, IN in 1835. They traveled in a group of twenty-five neighbors and relatives including members from the Sowers, Grimes, Myers, and Long families.
