John was born Aug. 27, 1921, to the late Clyde V. and Ethel Carlisle Powers in Robeson County, N.C. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. John attended North Carolina State University. He worked at the Newport News Shipyard for 34 years before retiring in 1986. He is survived by his wife, Snowdie Blackwell Powers; his daughter, Linda Blount; son-in-law, Richard E. Blount of Newport News; his two granddaughters, Mrs. Caroline Staedtler of San Antonio, Texas, and Miss Jamie Blount of Little Rock, Ark; and two sisters, Mrs. Jerry Ellingwood of Winstead, Conn., and Mrs. Virginia Andrews; and a brother, Mr. Nash Powers of Melbourne, Fla. He was a member of North Riverside Baptist Church, where he faithfully attended and helped in different activities of the church body for more than 50 years. He loved gardening. John will be greatly missed by friends and family. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at the funeral home with the Rev. John Sowell officiating. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. She was born on November 17, 1934 in Lumberton, North Carolina; the eighth of nine children to the late Clyde and Ethel (Carlyle) Powers. Dorothy moved to Winsted, CT in 1971. She worked as a Home Heath Aide, retiring from Foothills Visiting Nurse & Home Care. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star for many years. Dorothy enjoyed playing Bingo and loved attending all her grandchildren’s events. She is survived and will be missed by her children, Rodger (Tina) Ellingwood, Randall (Doris) Ellingwood, Susan (Ed) Regner and Sylvia Ellingwood; grandchildren, Emily (Brandon) Hunter, Michelle (Derek) Guibert, Carolyn (Alex Buley) Regner, Stephanie (Matt) Chasse, Sophia Ellingwood and Jonathan Moss; great grandchildren, Sadie, Sebby, Sophia, Holden, Trevor and Connor; sister-in-law, Lorene Powers; brother-in-law, Earle (Louise) Ellingwood; and numerous nieces and nephews.
