  Ellen Ruth Floyd Bruton, 93, of Georgia, died recently.
  
  The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Floyd family plot in Meadowbrook Cemetery.
  
  Bruton was the daughter of Johnson Hugh Floyd, who owned the first memorial stone business in Robeson County and was an active member and deacon of Lumberton's First Methodist Church. When the church chose to build a larger sanctuary on its Chestnut Street property in 1870, Johnson Hugh Floyd, as he was known, purchased the original church building at 702 Water St. and it was to this converted home that he, over a period of 45 years, brought three wives and raised two families of children. Bruton was the youngest of his 10 children.
  
  She was preceded in death by her mother, Ellen Valine Regan Floyd, her stepmother, Sudie Melvin Floyd; and three brothers, Regan Floyd, Billy Frank Floyd and former judge of the Recorders Court, Robert Floyd.
  
  Growing up motherless from age 7 to 14, she was much loved by her daddy, his sister, Darcas Leggett and her three older brothers. Her two brothers, Regan and Billy Frank, shared their skill at and love of swimming, dancing and basketball with Bruton, who went on to play on Lumberton's award-winning women's team. Her love of basketball was then shared with her daughters, who all played on various teams.
  
  In 1934 Bruton married Jefferson Byrd "J.B." Bruton, an admirer of hers since their elementary school days. Together they raised four children, Suellen Bruton (Mrs. Thomas Cunningham) of Bainbridge Island, Wash., Bill Bruton of Canton, Ga., Linda Bruton (Mrs. Doyce Cannon) of Maggie Valley and Brenda Bruton (Mrs. John Steele) of Monroe, Ga. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly.
  
  The family said: "With the passing of our mother, Ellen Ruth Floyd Bruton, a bit of Robeson County and Lumberton, N.C., history has ended."
  
  "Mother will always be remembered as a woman who cherished flowers, the seashore and her home, but it was unconditional love of her family that made her a gift to us all. That love is her true legacy."

  James Troy King JR.
  WHITEVILLE - James Troy King Jr., 85 of Whiteville died Sunday, February 27, 2000, at the Columbus County Hospital. He was the son of the late James Troy King Sr. and Jessie Butler . Mr. King was the owner and operator of the Western Auto Store in Whiteville for over 40 years. He was also very active in various civic organizations including having served as presidents of Whiteville Civitans. Whiteville Chamber of Commerce, Whiteville Country Club, and as a Whiteville City Councilman. In his early years, Mr. King served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy Reel King.
  
  Survivors include his son, Billy King and wife Suzanne of Whiteville, daughter, Suzanne King Hall and husband Jerry of Whiteville, sisters, Ruth Pearlman of Pinehurst, N.C., Rachel Lucas of Mt. Holly, N.C. Ellen Straugh of St. Pauls, N.C., brother Alton King of Highland, Utah, grandchildren, Baird King, Kyle King, Amanda Hall Jenkins and Anna Hall, great-grandchildren, William King and Lou Thomas King.

  Lehi, Utah—Alton Butler King, age 94, passed away November 2, 2021, at his home in Lehi, Utah. He was born and raised in St. Pauls, North Carolina, June 30, 1927. His parents, James Troy King and Jessie Elizabeth Butler, had seven children, of which he was the youngest. Alton worked hard on the farm and enjoyed his association with his sisters and the tenant farmers' children. In 1944, at 16, he enrolled at North Carolina State College where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He completed his degree at the University of Alabama. Later he began work in California at Douglas Aircraft designing jet aircraft. There he met the beautiful young woman who changed his life forever. Al married Elaine Kingsford on April 23, 1955, in Carmel, California. He was drafted into the Army and served in California and Virginia, where he embraced the gospel. On April 1, 1958, they were sealed for time and eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They lived in Salt Lake County, where their four children were born. In 1972, upon completing his Doctorate in Civil Engineering at Utah State University, he moved his family back home to North Carolina where he could share the Gospel with his parents and siblings. Al's family and the Church were the central driving forces in his life.
  
  His teaching career began in North Carolina and provided the means for him to serve in the Church. For 23 years he served in many capacities, including Bishop, Stake Patriarch, and Stake President, with his beloved companion, Elaine, as his support. His strength and testimony touched countless lives that enabled the Church to grow in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and surrounding areas, including the building of stake, ward, and branch buildings and helping to lay the groundwork for the building of the Raleigh Temple. His love of family extended into a love of Family History, which became a key component of his life in retirement; this led to his later serving, with Elaine, an 18 month Mission in the Hyde Park Family History Center in London, England.
  
  In 1994, Al and Elaine moved west to be near their children. They lived in Highland, Utah, for 12 years and in 2007 they moved to Lehi, Utah. Over the last many months of his life, he devoted his study of the Gospel to writing his insights on various topics and sharing his love, guidance, and testimony with his grandchildren in "Grandpa King's Weekly Chat."
  
  Alton is survived by his two daughters, Maribeth, (William "Bill") Boucher of Apex, NC; Kathryn (Alan) Peacock of Vernal, UT; his two sons, James King of Lehi, UT; David (Christie) King of Highland, UT; their twenty grandchildren, Tara (Rob) Roussel, LaDawn Boucher, Ryan (Ariana), Matthew (Olivia), Stephen, Katherine Boucher; Parry, Korinne, Anina, Evan, Mikayla Peacock; Sarah (Jacob) Jarvis, Aaron (Emily) King, Clarissa (Darryl) Thompson, Laura King, Jessica (Clark) Pehrson, Yvonne King; Amanda, Katie, Michael King and 13 great-grandchildren. Alton was preceded in death by his parents and his six siblings, James Troy King, Jr., William Archibald King, Annie Ruth King Perlman, Jessie Elizabeth King, Rachel Regan King Lucas, and Ellen Grace King.

  WHITEVILLE - Dorothy Reel King, 80, of Whiteville died Monday, August 3, 1998 at the Columbus County Hospital. She was the daughter of the late George M. and Beatrice Wade Reel. Mrs. King was a member of the Whiteville United Methodist Church and was a retired school teacher with the Whiteville City School.
  
  Survivors include her husband, James Troy King Jr . of the home; daughter, Suzanne King Hall and husband, Jerry of Whiteville; son, Billy King and wife,Suzanne of Whiteville, sisters; Mable Bynum of Wilmington, Marie Moore of Mount Olive, grandchildren; Baird King, Kyle King, Amanda Hall, Anna Hall; great-grandchildren; William King and Lou Thomas King.

• Biography*: Raymond Perlman of Seven Lakes North, West End, NC, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2015.
  
  Born on May 17, 1923 in Sheboygan WI, he was the son of the late Ben and Anna Perlman also of Sheboygan. He was married to his wife of 65 years, the late Ruth King Perlman of St. Pauls, NC. He is survived by daughter, Nancy Simonds (husband, John) of Lee Summit MO, and Leslie Schaitberger (husband Joe) of St. Simons Island GA; and Brother Milton Perlman of FL. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jason Simonds (wife Laura), Jessica Windish, Samantha Schaitberger, and great- grandchildren, Kaylie and Jadyn Simonds. He was also brother to the late Dorthy Helen Perlman and Sophia Perlman.
  
  Mr. Perlman, raised in Sheboygan WI, graduated from Central High School in 1941. He attended University Of Illinois and graduated with a Commercial Art and Design degree. His studies were interrupted between 1943 and 1946 when he served as a Sergeant in the armed forces. He participated in the Ryukus Campaigns and received commendations for his work at Motobu Airstrip, Okinawa.
  
  Upon his return, he resumed his studies and received his Masters of Fine Arts from University of Illinois and Masters of Professional Arts from Art Center College of Design Pasadena, CA.
  
  He was Professor Emeritus, School of Art and Design, University of Illinois at Urbana/ Champaign from 1960 to 1982 heading up the curriculum in Graphic Design.
  
  While teaching, he freelanced extensively in illustration and design. Major projects included the illustrations in the Nature Guide Series: Rocks and Minerals, Fossils, Light and Color, and Geology and Ecology. He contributed extensive layout and finished art for World Book Encyclopedia and Childcraft as well as the University of Illinois. Fine art accomplishments are in primarily in watercolor, printmaking and photography. His biography is in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Art.
  
  After retiring, Ray moved to the Sandhills area with his beloved wife, Ruth, and continued teaching for three additional years helping to establish a Commercial Art program for Fayetteville Technical College. He continued to exhibit his art in this area until 2009.
  
  Another talent and passion of Ray's was singing. A student member of the U of I University Chorus and later with the faculty member opera workshop he performed choral pieces and opera. On his own he had sung "miles and miles" of church and solo singing and delved into folk singing in the 60's and 70's accompanying himself on autoharp. Once moving here he joined the Moore County Choral Society, where he enjoyed not only singing and designing the poster announcements each year, but also making great friends.
  
  Raymond enjoyed gardening beside Ruth for years, creating beautiful masterpieces of color and design. He enjoyed chatting about their flowers with neighbors joining in on Garden Walks. He comments on retirement. …"since retiring, what with working around the house and yard, including clearing spaces for the badminton court and horseshoes, laying brick walkways, and assisting Ruth with the landscaping and planting, I'm discovering how full life in the Sandhills can be. Because the Sandhills are just that….sand, one spends hours watering! The water swishes right on through to the Southern Hemisphere, creating lush rain forests in the upper reaches of the Amazon! " He had a fabulous sense of humor that will be missed dearly by his family and friends!
  
  A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 25, at 2 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home of Seven Lakes
