F. Kelton Broadwell was the 8th of eleven children born to Haynes Lennon Broadwell and wife, Aley Caroline Barker Broadwell of West Howellsville Township, Robeson County, North Carolina. Kelton's early life was heavily influenced by his devoted parents, Haynes and Aley, who believed in God, family, and hard work. Kelton and his siblings learned to farm while they were still young, but they all proved to be good students as well which led to them being successful educators and businessmen later in life.

Kelton met the love of his life, Ila Mae Kinlaw, at Regan United Methodist Church, when he was a young man and she was still a young girl. He adored her dimples and remarked to his brothers that since she was the prettiest little girl he had seen, he would just have to wait for her to grow up.

World War I came and with it the draft. Kelton and his brothers (Waverly, Edwin and Don) were all drafted. Only Mack remained at home where he died later that year. Kelton made his trip over the Atlantic to fight in the War on a huge Battleship. Over forty years later, Kelton relayed his memories of the harrowing trip across the Atlantic to my mother. Caught in a storm, the men on the ship were astounded by the huge waves which threatened to breach their decks and/or capsize the ship. Despite all of this, during the war, Kelton successfully served as a medic in France.

In May, 1928, Kelton married Ila Mae. The two cared for his widowed mother, Aley Barker Broadwell until her death and they had two children of their own.

Kelton became a prominent farmer and real estate owner, a member of the American Legion, a steward of Regan United Methodist Church where his family and Ila Mae's family had always worshiped, but above all, a beloved father and grandfather. When he died suddenly of a heart attack on July 11, 1965, family, friends and community were inconsolable for Kelton was known for his great kindness and generosity.
