  • Biography*: The Rev John Archie Malloy Johnson was the son of Surena Humphrey and her husband James Johnson of Robeson county, NC. John came to Georgia from his home in NC as a young man. In Pierce County, GA on Dec 13, 1893, he became the husband of Maggie Mozelle Hall of Appling county, GA.
    This union was blessed with Sallie, Effie, Edith, Lennon, Kenneth, Leroy and Pauline.

    "John Archie Maloy Johnson was born August 24,1870, in Robeson county,
    North Carolina. He came to Georgia at the age of 21 and Married Mrs.
    Maggie Smith Hall. They united at old Iron Bridge Church. It was there
    that he was called to preach and was ordained soon after. He was in the
    constitution of the church at Beulah. They became active members and
    shared in all its honors and burdens. So reliable were they that the
    church appointed them to every place of honor, and delighted in their
    fellowship. "

    Rev. Johnson died in a local hospital in Waycross, GA, 23 Jan 1953 and
    was buried in the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery in Pierce County, GA,
    next to his wife Maggie, who died 28 Oct 1924.

    GARDEN CITY – Kenneth Preston Johnson, 85, of 4011 Old Louisville Road, died Sunday at Candler General Hospital after a short illness.
    The ware County native was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church and Zerubabbel Masonic Lodge. He was a retired fireman from the Savannah Fire Department.
    Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ann M. Johnson of Garden City; two daughters, Mrs. Doris Akins of Tybee Island and Mrs. Betty Henderson of Stone Mountain; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Ann Hill of La Plase, LA; three stepsons, William E. Buckner of Tampa, Fla., Clarence K. Buckner of Baltimore and Kenneth O. Butler of Deland, Fla; two sisters , Mrs. Bernice Denton and Mrs. Pauline Taylor both of Waycross; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

    Daughter of Kenneth Preston Johnson and Mae Bell Lewis. Preceeding her in death were her parents and sister, Betty Mae Johnson Henderson; son-in-law, Dennis Rogers; and great-granddaughter, Valarie Cook. Surviving is her loving and devoted husband of over 71 years, Euel Akins; three daughters, Delores Ann (Gerald) Fleming of Arlington, VA; Betty Carolyn Rogers of Augusta, GA; and Brenda Sue (Arthur) Davis of Pooler, GA; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

    Mrs. Akins spent her early years in Savannah, where she graduated from Commercial High School. During WWII and for several years thereafter, she was employed with the U.S. Army, Third Transportation Corps, supporting the efforts to move supplies and families to overseas destinations.
    In 1954, she was employed by Union Camp Corp. and in 1967 she and Euel were transferred to Montgomery, AL. While in AL, she graduated with summa cum laude honors from Troy State University having earned a Bachelor of Science degree with an accounting concentration. Mrs. Akins retired from Union Camp Corp. as accounting department supervisor in Payroll & Billing after serving over 30 yrs.

    In addition to family and church activities, she had a profound interest in genealogy, discovering that her ancestors were among the early settlers from Ireland & England who located in New England and VA.
    She was a former member of First Bapt. Church of the Island in Savannah and upon moving to Bulloch County in 1999, she became an active member of Statesboro's First Bapt. Church and devoted member of the Steadfast-Dorcas Sunday School Class.

    Virginia Doris Johnson Akins died at the Ogeechee Area Hospice facility on September 11, 2012. Born in Savannah, GA on March 7, 1923, she was one of two daughters of Kenneth Preston Johnson and Mae Bell Lewis. Preceding her in death were her parents and sister, Betty Mae Johnson Henderson, son-in-law, Dennis Rogers, and great granddaughter Valarie Cook.

    The Funeral will be held at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Statesboro, GA with Dr. John Waters, Pastor officiating. Entombment is at 3:00 PM in the Hillcrest Cemetery Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Savannah, GA.

    PFC EUEL AKINS, UNITED STATES ARMY

    SERVICE: Entered on active duty 8 June 44, at Fort McPherson, Ga. Served basic training at Camp Blanding, Fla., and then was assigned to Fort Meade, Md., for movement to Naples, Italy, and overseas combat infantry duty. Was assigned to 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, Tenth Mountain Division. Participated as a heavy machine gunner in major battles of Apennines Mountains and Po Valley, Italy.
    With the ending of hostilities in Europe, The 10th Mtn. Division was designated to return to Camp Carson, CO., for refitting and reassignment to Pacific Theater of Operations.
    We Arrived back in the United States ll Aug 45 and was enroute to Camp Carson, CO.
    I received a 10 day pass. I arrived home 8/14/1945, VJ day. Doris and some friends met me at the Buss station. Having acquired sufficient service points for discharge, received honorable discharge from military service at Camp Carson, CO., on 22 Oct 1945.

    DECORATIONS: Received Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster for "meritorious achievement in ground combat against the armed enemy during World War II in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operations". Was also awarded Combat Infantryman Badge, World War II Victory Medal, EAME Campaign Medal with two bronze stars, and Good Conduct Medal.

    OTHER: Entered Georgia National Guard, 230th Field Artillery Bn., and served 1948-1951. Was commissioned Second Lieutenant Artillery and served as Forward Observer.

    Euel Akins Obituary
    Euel Akins, (10/14/20-04/29/2023), was born in Statesboro, Georgia, and was one of four sons of Lewis Hardy Akins and Bertha Jane Barker.
    He was preceded in death by his best friend and love of his life, Virginia Doris Johnson Akins, on September 11, 2012; three brothers, Harry, Clinton and Floyd; and great-granddaughter, Valarie Cook.
    Euel is survived by three daughters, Delores Ann Fleming (Gerald) of Savannah, Ga; Betty Carolyn Rogers (Dennis, deceased) of Augusta, Ga; Brenda Sue Davis (Arthur) of Pooler, Ga; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren.
    At the age of 6, the Akins family moved to Savannah, where Euel completed his primary schooling.
    Later in life, Euel earned his private pilot license.
    In 1967, Euel and Doris relocated to Prattville, Ala., when he was promoted to purchasing agent for a new Union Camp Paper Corp. facility.
    In 1979, he and Doris earned their undergraduate degrees from Troy State University.
    After 20 years of service in Alabama, he retired from International Paper Company (formerly Union Camp) with over 46 years of service.
    Euel and Doris returned to Savannah and attended First Baptist Church of the Islands, where he served as a deacon and was on the Finance Committee.
    In 1999, Euel and Doris relocated to Bulloch County and attended First Baptist Church of Statesboro, where he served as lead usher for many years.
    In 2019, Euel returned to Savannah with his daughter, Delores, and son-in-law, Gerald Fleming.
    An Army combat veteran of World War II, then PFC Euel Akins, a member of the 10th Mountain Division Combat Infantry, D Company, 87th Regiment, fought valiantly in major battles in the North Apennines Mountains (Riva Ridge and Mt. Belvedere) and the Po Valley areas of Italy. For this distinguished service, he was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters for Meritorious Achievement in combat against an armed enemy.
    During the period 1948-1952, Euel served in the Georgia Army National Guard's Battery B, 230th Field Artillery Battalion as a first lieutenant and was designated as an artillery forward observer.
    In May 2019, for his distinguished military service and lifetime support to 10th Mtn Division soldiers, families and veterans, Euel, along with Sen. Bob Dole, WWII Medal of Honor recipients and other distinguished soldiers, were all inducted into the 10th Mountain Division (LI) Warrior Legends Hall of Fame at Ft Drum, N.Y.
    Euel was a past master of Landrum Lodge # 48 F. A. & M., a member of the Grand Chapter of Georgia R.A.M. and when he passed, was the oldest member of the Alee Temple of Savannah.
    Visitation will be at Baker-McCullough Funeral Home, Savannah, GA, on May 9th from noon until 1 p.m.
    A service conducted by Ricky Allen, senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Statesboro, will follow in the chapel at 1 p.m. Following the service, Mr. Akins will be laid to rest, with military honors, in the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens Cemetery (Mausoleum) Chapel of Faith in Savannah, GA.
