Resided in Bladen County and enlisted in New Hanover County at age 35, March 7, 1862 for the war. Present or accounted for through August 1864. Captured at Fort Fisher January 15, 1865 and confined at Point Lookout,MD, until released after taking Oath of Allegiance June 26, 1865.

His Brother Elisha Dowless was wounded and captured at the same time and confined at the same location and released at the same time.
