  LUMBERTON - Dr. Douglas Carmichael McIntyre, 87, of Lumberton, passed away on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, in Wesley Pines Methodist Retirement Home. He was born in Lumberton on July 20, 1923, to Eli Regan McIntyre and Lillian McIntyre. He had served on the Lumberton City Council from 1971-1976, and was mayor pro tem in 1975. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946, Pacific Theatre. He received his bachelor of science degree in 1947, from Wake Forest College, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and his optometry degree in 1950, from Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lumberton, where he served as a deacon from 1959 -1968, elder (first elected 1968), Sunday school teacher, clerk of session and church lay missionary to Mexico in 1997, 1998 and 1999. He was selected as elder emeritus in 2002. He was the recipient of the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 1999; State Vice-President of the N.C. Jaycees, 1954; chairman of the Lumberton Recreation Commission, 1967; secretary of the Lumberton High School Sports Foundation, which helped build the school's football stadium, 1966-1968; president of Lumberton Kiwanis Club in 1973, and secretary, 1993; Master of St. Alban's Lodge No. 114 AF & AM, 1973; Sudan Shrine Temple, a founder of Lumberton Christian Care Center and vice president of the board of directors in 1985, and he often served as a volunteer for the center; Lumberton Recreation Department - volunteer baseball coach, 1966-1972; Little Tar Heel League All-Star coach, 1967; Lumberton Cotillion Club - -president, 1971; Charter Board of Directors of Recreation Facilities Inc. (which built Woodside Pool), 1962; master gardener, Robeson County Extension Service; Kiwanis Key Man of the Year, 1970. He also was an artist who enjoyed pottery, painting and stained-glass windows. Dr. McIntyre is survived by his wife of 62 years, Thelma Hedgpeth McIntyre; a son, Congressman Mike McIntyre and wife Dee of Lumberton; two daughters, Linda M. Mansy and husband Joe of Alexandria, Va., and Karon M. Strickland and husband Gary of Fayetteville; a sister, Minta M. Cook of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, Amy Strickland Weeks, Joel Strickland, Joshua McIntyre and Stephen McIntyre; and two great-grandchildren, Bailey and Bentley Weeks. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Lumberton, with Dr. Matt Rich and the Rev. Gary Strickland officiating.   Douglas Carmichael McIntyre, the father of U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre and a former Lumberton city councilman, has died. He was 87.
  Dr. McIntyre served on the City Council from 1971 to 1976, and was mayor pro tem in 1975. He held numerous civic posts from the 1950s through the 1980s, including as president of the Lumberton Kiwanis Club, state vice president of the N.C. Jaycees and secretary of the Lumberton High School Sports Foundation, which helped build the school's football stadium. He earned a degree in optometry in 1950 from Northern Illinois College.
  Dr. McIntyre died today at Wesley Pines Methodist Retirement Home.
  He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Thelma Hedgpeth McIntyre; a son, Congressman Mike McIntyre; daughters Linda M. Mansy and Karon M. Strickland; and several other relatives, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
  A memorial service is Sunday at 7 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Lumberton. Visitation will be in the church fellowship hall after the service.

• Biography*: Thelma Hedgpeth-McIntyre, 94, of Lumberton, NC, passed away on May 16, 2021 at Wesley Pines retirement home.
  
  She was born on July 28, 1926 in Fairmont.
  
  Thelma was born and reared in Fairmont, prior to moving to Lumberton after her marriage to the late Dr. Douglas C. McIntyre of Lumberton.
  
  She was well-known as a local banker, having been a trailblazer for professional women in banking. After attending Flora Macdonald College, she started her career with the National Bank of Lumberton and then, subsequently, worked at the bank in the Merchandise Mart in Chicago while her husband attended optometry school. Upon their return to Lumberton, she worked with Waccamaw Bank and Trust Company at its Five Points Branch in her hometown of Fairmont before coming back to Lumberton when Waccamaw opened its first office on North Court Square beside the Robeson County Courthouse, where she was later named assistant cashier. She became one of the first female branch managers when Waccamaw opened its Biggs Park branch, which later became United Carolina Bank, and she oversaw use of the bank's first ATM at her branch. She later became the first female manager of a main downtown office of Waccamaw when it opened its new building at the corner of 7th and Chestnut Streets in Lumberton and worked there as Assistant Vice President until her retirement in 1985. She also served on the State Board of Directors for the National Association of Bank Women.
  
  Active in the First Presbyterian Church, she served as chair of the Presbyterian Women's Support Group; chair of the volunteer receptionists for the church office, co-chair of the bereavement committee; coordinator of the volunteer staff for the church newsletter; was an active member of the Lacy McKenzie Bible Class; was a member of the Witness Committee and Congregational Care Committee; and had served as a volunteer worker on the church grounds. She was also a volunteer worker and hostess for the Celebration of Faith in 1991 and in 1993 and a delegate to the Christian Life Conference in Montreat for several years, having also participated in lay renewals at other churches and having served as a hostess and participant in the Lumberton Christian Women's Club activities. In recognition of her service, she was selected as a Life Honorary Member of Presbyterian Women.
  
  Having served on the Robeson County Human Relations Commission, she also spearheaded the sales of the book, Away Down Home, a history of Robeson County, and served on the Board of Directors of Historic Robeson, Inc., and as coordinator of its annual banquet; treasurer of the Biggs Park Merchants Association; president of the Readers Book Club; coordinator of the countywide homecoming event in 1987 as part of the Robeson County Bicentennial Commission; and was an active member of the Lumberton Garden Club.
  
  Known for her beautiful handwriting, she was perpetually chosen to address invitations for community events, including those during her service as secretary of the Lumberton Cotillion Club.
  
  Her unique collection of dolls through the years was a special attraction that she shared with children and friends from throughout the community.
  
  Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Douglas C. McIntyre; her parents, Elmer Lewis Hedgpeth and Annie Ashley Hedgpeth; a brother, E. L. Hedgpeth; a sister, Betty Hedgpeth-Hancock; and a half-brother, Joseph Lynwood Ashley.
  
  She is survived by her daughters, Linda McIntyre-Mansy (Joe), an interior designer, of Alexandria, VA and Karon McIntyre-Strickland (Gary), an educator, of Fayetteville, NC; a son, former Congressman Douglas Carmichael "Mike" McIntyre, II (Dee), an attorney, of Chapel Hill/Hillsborough; four grandchildren: Amy Weeks (Steve), Joel Strickland (Whitney), Joshua McIntyre (Sarah), and Stephen McIntyre (Angelica); five great-grandchildren: Bailey Weeks, Bentley Weeks, Nolan Strickland, Avery Strickland, and Hamilton McIntyre; one additional great-grandchild expected in July; and a brother, Carey Hedgpeth (Betty).
  
  A graveside service is scheduled to be held at Meadowbrook Cemetery.
