  A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Sterling Calvin Sykes and the daughter of James Melvin Pendergrass and Ruth White Pendergrass, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Baptist Church, Chapel Hill, N.C.
  Survivors include a son, Dennis Sykes and wife Lisa of Bethania, N.C; two daughters, Jean Sykes Humphrey and husband Charles of Lilburn, Ga. and Linda Sykes Brown of Carthage, N.C; a sister, Betty P. Fogleman of Elon, N.C; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
  She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
  The funeral service will be conducted at Bethel Baptist Church on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Donald Cason. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

  She was born April 3, 1931 in Winston-Salem, the daughter of the late Gorrell Aldine and Rose Ham Tillotson. She graduated from John. W. Hanes High School and attended Wake Forest University. She was employed as a bookkeeper for Fogle Furniture in Winston-Salem for eleven years. She served as Vice President and Secretary of Print Professionals in High Point for twenty years, retiring in 1989 due to her ill health. She was a member of Oakview United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and Secretary of the United Methodist Woman. On June 20, 1959 she married Robert Eugene Pendergrass who survives of the home
  Also surviving is one daughter, Penny Elizabeth Pendergrass of Arlington, VA; one son, Perry Eugene Pendergrass and his wife Sherry of Greensboro; one sister, Carlene Willis and her husband, Floyd of Charlotte.

• Biography*: CHAPEL HILL - Haywood Melvin Pendergrass died Friday, September 7, 2007, at his home after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on May 28, 1939, in Orange County to Melvin and Ruth Pendergrass. He grew up in Carrboro and graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1957. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Frances Troy Pendergrass; his son, Bill Pendergrass and his wife, Diane; and his grandsons, Nathan and Jacob. He was predeceased by his son, David. In addition, he is survived by his sisters, Hazel Sykes of Burlington and Betty Fogleman of Elon, and numerous nieces and nephews. He went to UNC-Chapel Hill and, subsequently, became a certified clinical engineer. After 35 years with UNC Memorial Hospital, he retired as the director of the medical engineering department. He had a great love for music and played banjo with the Piney Mountain Boys. He also was an avid ham radio operator, with his handle being AG4PI. He liked to be called the itinerant golfer because he chose to play in many locations. A memorial service will be held at Bethel Baptist Church at 9326 Bethel Hickory Grove Church Road on Monday, September 10, 2007 at 4 p.m. with Dr. Robert Tennant of Hillsong Church performing the service.
