  Prominent Citizen of Lexington Many Years Dies at Greensboro
  
  Mrs. Susan Penry Grimes, 84, widow of John D. Grimes, died at 11:35 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Leonard B. Hurley, in Greensboro, where she had made her home for a number of years since removing from her native Lexington. For several years following the death of Mr. Grimes, she resided with a son, Mr. Lawrence Grimes, at Winston-Salem.
  
  Funeral services were conducted from the home of Mrs. Hurley at 2304 West Market Street, Greensboro, at 2:30 this afternoon and the remains are being brought to Lexington for interment beside her late husband in the family plot in the city cemetery. The funeral cortege was expected to arrive here at four o'clock with a brief interment service planned at the graveside.
  
  Pallbeareres for the service today include John D. Grimes, L. Malcolm Grimes, Jr., Gaston Grimes, T. C. Hinkle, Penry Owen, Stedman Morris, Loy D. Thompson and Cliff H. Thompson.
  
  Mrs. Grimes was the last surviving child of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Penry, leading citizens of this city in its pioneer period, who resided in a brick residence that stood just off court square on East Center Street, on the site of the old Greer home there. She was educated in the better schools of her day and for some time thereafter served as an instructor. She married John D. Grimes, who at first engaged in the milling business at the old homestead several miles north of Lexington and also at the present site of Old Mill Farm on the Yadkin River. About this time Mr. Grimes and his brother, the late T. J. Grimes, established here in 1879 the first roller mill in North Carolina. This business is carried on now by her son, L.M. Grimes and grandson, Malcolm, Jr., and Gaston.
  
  Mrs. Grimes was for many years a devoted member of First Methodist church here and continued her membership in this church where she and her husband worshipped together for so many years. Mr. Grimes passed away here about twenty years ago.
  
  Survivors include three sons, J. Percy Grimes, a leading business man of Salisbury; Dr. W. Lawrence Grimes, outstanding surgeon of Winston-Salem, and L. Malcolm Grimes, a prominent business man here; one daughter, Mrs. L. B. Hurly, Greensboro, whose husband heads the English department of Woman's College there; nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. There are also a number of nieces and nephews here and elsewhere.
  
  Mrs. Grimes had been in very poor health for several months and when she contracted pneumonia a few days ago hope for recovery was abandoned.
