Biography*: Mr. Whitaker was highly regarded in his community and people often sought his advice for his wisdom and fairness. He was a compassionate man, lending and giving money to those in need. He was very generous to his family. He gave each of his married daughters a house. He took in his widowed daughter Mollie and her 4 children to live with him and second wife "Mama". If times were hard for some family members at Christmas, he would tell his household we aren't going to have a big splash this Christmas either. One cold winter afternoon he drove his buggy to the home of his daughter Ida and her husband Austen Hayes, who was noted for his lazyness; Ida was outside chopping away at the wooden foundation block for kindling while Austen played the violin in the parlor. Mr. Whitaker expressively encouraged his daughter to chop the 'damn' house down and let the house fall on the head of her "good for nothing" husband. Mr Whitaker often drove by their farm to see the cotton and corn fields choked with weeds. Austen was a farmer but too much of a gentleman to dirty his hands or bend his back to a hard task. A funny anecdote much quoted, was told in the family when Austin dined with his relatives on occasions and was invited to have seconds by his hostess; he would always answer "my suffiency has been sancified , any more would be obnoxious to my taste. PaPa went to the state fair one year and bought the winners of the blue ribbon which made him the proud owner of a matched pair of dappled grey horses. It was the talk of the town.
