Mamie was living with her parents in Brooklyn, NY on the 1880 Census, with her brother John.
Note, Source: Mary Lou [Carson] House, Indiv.# 80652, "In 1886, she was with her adopted parents, Thomas and Bell Hargett in Charlotte, N.C. Her brother John, was living with a family by the name of Sharpe in Raleigh, N.C. No one knows what happened to her parents, or why with her mother's family still in New York was she sent to North Carolina. Mamie died young and her children were raised by her eldest daughter, May. Mamie studied at the Consevatory of Music in Asheville, N.C. and could play beautiful piano and taught many children to play for extra money to feed her children. When She And William married In Charlotte, Alexander's Ragtime Band played at their wedding. It was at one of the grand hotels in Charlotte, and evidently a "gala" affair. The pallbears at her funeral were the city councilmen and the mayor of Charlotte, due to the fact her oldest son, Harvey, was the Chief of Police at that time." - Birth*: Mary was born on 16 Mar 1876.1,2
