  • Biography*: Farmer.

Note, Source: Mary Lou [Carson] House, Indiv.# 80652, "He left his first wife when she was six months pregnant with his youngest son, James Samuel. His wife told everyone that he just walked out on her, she didn't know why he left, and that he had just up and took off for California. After researching him for quite some time, I found that she had told many lies about Joe. He had left, but had written letters to his Uncle John in Lexington, including one telling his Uncle to sell his corn and pay the doctor for his son's birth. Joe went to Missouri to his brother's home and stayed there for a short time, before returning to Lexington, N.C. He remarried and after she died he lived in High Point, N.C. When he was too ill to take care of himself, his granddaughter, Joy Belle took him into her home until he passed away. After much research, I found out the reason that he left his first wife. He had been out working in his fields and came home for lunch early and found his wife in bed with another man. He said he just looked at her, picked up his clothes and left."

  • Biography*: Note, Source: Mary Lou [Carson] House, Indiv.# 80652, "Joy Belle was a wonderful seamstress and would use scraps from her dresses to make doll clothes for her oldest granddaughter. Even though they didn't have much money, she would always provide all of her grandchildren with a "special Christmas Box" each year, filled with various items that she would purchase through the year. These boxes were the best part of all the grandchildren's Christmas gifts. She was a very warm and loving person and no matter what her children or grandchildren did, she never forgot to tell them that she loved them. She wrote beautiful poetry and loved reading it. She always had a twinkle in her grey eyes. She suffered from "milk leg" but no matter how swollen it was, if you said "go", she was up and ready, always careful to powder her nose, put her pearl earring on, and make sure she had her hat straight."

He was a cook on one of the ships. He enjoyed gardening and became quite an organic gardener. One thing that always stands out in my mind about my grandfather was he always poured his coffee into his saucer and drank it from there. He told me that was the best way to cool it off. Grandpa loved to tell silly jokes to his grandchildren and enjoyed playing with them. He was a kind hearted man. He told me when he was five years old, he had to go to work to help support the family. He would go to the corner grocery store, load up his wagon and deliver groceries to the people in the neighborhood. He said he made 5 cents a day which he gave to his father. He ran away from home and joined the Merchant Marines when he was sixteen because he could not get along with his father."

James Bailey

  • Biography*: It has been stated in many circles that "James Bailey" was from Lanarkshire, Scotland. This assertion is PURE fantasy. This particular reference for OUR "James Bailey" was tracked down and found to have been originated by the professional FLIM-FLAM artist in Bath, Ohio.
