  • Biography*: I have looked without sucess for a Figuars in SC with no luck. I assume that this is a good spelling, since William G was literate. However, in the 1790 census of Northampton County, there are 2 Figures Mattw Figure with 2 males 16 and up, no females, and 8 slaves Batt Figures with 1 male 16 and up, 3 males under 16, 3 females, and 4 slaves. This is my best guess as to who my line is.

title: Includes England and United States Genealogy on Cawthorne, Cauthorn,
    publisher: Craftmaster Printers, Inc.

source text: Available from: J. J. Horton 1434 S. Perry Street Montgomery, Alabama 36104-5538, Page 68. In 1804, he bought 100 acres on Cedar Creek (Lancaster District, South Carolina). Two years later he bought 186 acres on Hanging Rock Creek and there he established his home and lived the rest of his life. By 1830 he owned a mill. In 1872, when his estate was settled he had 1, 852 acres.

It was said that as a young man he worked from daylight to dark in the fields, and that during the planting season he even plowed at night, being guided to the end of each row by a burning torch held by his wife. In 1951, part of their old house was still standing, with square-cut log walls, a stone chimney and fireplace, and the main room still intact, but the roof gone and the upper floor mostly fallen in. Snapshots taken then show that it had been one-and-a-half stories high and had been finished on the inside with smooth horizontal boards about eight inches wide. The outside had been covered with wide siding, probably at a later date. The house had consisted of a main room about 22 feet long by 12 feet wide with a great fireplace at one end over 4 feet wide. A heavy wood mantel shelf attached to the stone chimney face was still in place. In one corner of the main room were remains of a steep enclosed stairway to the upstairs which had headroom at the side walls of about four feet. This was probably a typical house built in the days before sawmills made lighter stud-wall construction possible.
