  • Military*: William participated in the Military event. Col William's brothers probably fought during the War of the Revolution, but no records have emerged to support this conclusion to date. Evidence given is their habit of naming children after military figures such as George Washington, Nathaniel Greene, Francis Marion and James Edward Powell. He fought in the War of the Revolution under Francis Marion, The Swamp Fox. From Camden paper, Camden, SC date January 21, 1832, Camden Chronical is found an item which states that "A Christian friend at White Oak Creek in this district on the 17th Inst. Mr. Wiliam Shiver deceased in the 69th year of his age, January 17, 1832. Mr. Shiver was one of the gallant men who served with Marion in the War of the Revolution." White Oak Creek is in the north west part of Kershaw County and empties into the Wateree River. The river runs through Wateree Pond.
