Scottish ancestral information obtained through the "Scottish Church Records", compiled and produced by the Registrar General for Scotland. • Biography*: The ancient KING family is shown as being "of Clan MacGregor". According to Scottish history, families which lived closely with, were intermarried with and protected by a Clan, were considered sub-septs of that Clan. From the book, "THE CLANS AND TARTANS OF SCOTLAND", enlarged and re-edited by Margaret O. MacDougall, pages #180-181: Page 180, top right, shows the MacGregor Clan crest. To the right of this is : MACGREGOR -- Crest Badge: A lion's head, erased, crowned with an antique crown, proper. Motto: 'S rioghal mo dhream [Royal is my race]. Gaelic Name: MacGrioghair. Below this is the following text: " 'S rioghal mo dhream [Royal is my race] is the claim of this, one of the most famous of Highland clans, and the pricipal branch of the Clan Alpine. The clan claim descent from Griogar, son of KING Alpin, in the 8th century. The home of the clan was the eastern border of Argyll and the western border of Perthshire, including Glenorchy, Glenstrae, Glenlyon and Glengyle. The earliest possession of the clan, Glenorchy, preciously owned by the Campbells, was bestowed on the MacGregors for services rendered to Alexander II in his conquest of Argyll. For a long time the MacGregors maintained possession of their lands by right of the sword, but the enmity of surrounding clans resulted in attempts to displace the clan, and the inevitable retaliation by the MacGregors, who thus earned the reputation of being a turbulent clan. During these conflicts the Campbells were enabled to obtain grants of the MacGregor lands, the name of MacGregor was proscribed, and severe enactments were passed against the clan, whose unfortunate members were prosecuted and persecuted. Charles II, because of their support, repealed the acts against Clan Gregor, but upon the accession of William of Orange the acts of proscription were renewed, and it was not until 1775 that the penal statutes against the MacGregors were finally repealed. After the restoration of their rights a meeting of the clan was held and John Murray of Lanrick, afterwards Sir John MacGregor, Bart., descended from the family of Glenstrae, was recognised as chief. Rob Roy [1671-1734] the celebrated freebooter and hero of Sir Walter Scott's romance, was a son of Lieut.Col. Donald MacGregor of Glengyle." The facing page [#181], shows the official tartan, along with the following additional information: Origin of Name: Son of Gregory [flocksman]. Plant Badge: Pine. War Cry: Ard-choille. Pipe Music: Ruaig Ghlinne Freoine [Chase of Glen Fruin].

Last Edited: 3 Aug 2014
  • Biography*: From Bil Brasington - The history of this ancient Derbyshire family traces its ancestry as a family of Norman origin before the year 1100 and appears first in the ancient records in Derbyshire This a habitation name from a place in Derbyshire, which Ekwall suggests is from Olde English Brantstigtun, 'enclosure (tun) by the steep (brant) path (stig)', or Brandsigingtun 'settlement associated with *Brandsige'is more likely. Brandsige, composed of the elements brand (Sword) + sige (Victory), is not attested as an Olde English personal name, but seems plausible. Herbert Williamson Brasington and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hvostal, visited Brassington, Derbyshire, England but were unable to trace or find any one there with the family name. In records at County seat at Matlock, they were able to find the name to the 13th century.
