  • Biography*: After searching the Southeast for a suitable location, he returned to his home in Darlington and persuaded J S Ramsey to donate a 105 acre tract of farm land and began coaxing investors to contribute to what many deemed a far-fetched project. The merits of his idea were proved on 4 Sept 1950 when an estimated crowd of 23,600 watched the first Darlington 500, helping to give birth to NASCAR. He also built North Carolina Motor Speedway in Rockingham, North Carolina.

He was a member for First Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC; Jotipa Sunday School Class and the VFW. Surviving Mr. Chestnut are his wife, Kathleen Brasington Chestnut of Cheraw; sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Nancy Chestnut and Jim and Judy Chestnut, all of Cheraw; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Helen and Boyce Mabry of Rock Hill; brothers, Hoyt Chestnut and Vonnie Chestnut, both of Conway; grandchildren, Michelle C. Rohde, Brooke C. Bowman, Shannon M. Jacobs, Jason J. Chestnut, Bryan J. Chestnut, Shane Mabry and Clay Mabry; great grandchildren, Storm Jacobs, Bailey Jacobs, Madison Jacobs, Taylor Chestnut, Brynna Chestnut, Davy Rohde, and Kevin Bowman. He was preceded in death by his sister, Eva Chestnut and brother, Clinton Chestnut. The family will receive friends 7:00-9:00 PM Monday, May 18, 1998 at Kiser Funeral Home.
