  Mrs. Arnette, 85, died Saturday [July 16] in a Dillon, S.C. hospital after an illness.

  Mrs. Maria Richardson Bliss, 83, died March 15, 2016, at her home in Asheboro, NC following a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
  
  Maria was born in Lumberton, NC, on February 5, 1933, a daughter of the late Van Best “Dick” Richardson and Edna Earle Arnette Richardson. She graduated Woman’s College in Greensboro in 1955 and began teaching sixth grade at the Fayetteville Street Elementary School in Asheboro. Maria later graduated from the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and served Asheboro’s First United Methodist Church as an ordained minister. She was very active in local women’s organizations helping found the Women’s Crisis Center for abused women and children.
  
  Maria was a loyal lifelong Democrat receiving several awards from the North Carolina local and state Democratic Party. She was also the recipient of North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, The Order of the Longleaf Pine for her exemplary civilian service to the State of North Carolina and her community. She was also the supervisor for Randolph County elections for 15 years.
  
  Survivors include her husband, Charles Henry “Chuck” Bliss of the home; a daughter, Dr. Katherine Bliss and her husband, Brian Dobyns and their sons Tim and Ryan; a son, Charles Richardson Bliss and his wife, Lisa Radtke, and their daughter Laurel and son, Neill Richardson Bliss.
  
  Also surviving is a twin brother, Henry B. Richardson of Monroe; and two sisters, Lynn Richardson of Durham and Jacqueline Huntley of Lilesville.
  
  
  The family suggests donations in her memory be made to First United Methodist Church, 224 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro, NC 27203.

  ASHEBORO — Maria Bliss, a former director of the Randolph County Board of Elections, died Tuesday — on Election Day.
  But Bliss was known more for her political activism, particularly women’s rights, than for her 16 years with the board of elections. In the 1970s she was president of the North Carolinians United for the Equal Rights Amendment. Later, she was a driving force in establishing the Family Crisis Center for battered women.
  Along the way she found time to raise three children, go to divinity school and serve a host of organizations, including the Randolph Arts Guild, where she received the Life Member Award; Friends of the Library; and Regional Consolidated Services, which bestowed one of its highest honors on her, the Humanitarian Award.
  She was also a former president of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society and of the Asheboro Business and Professional Women’s Club, the latter naming her Woman of the Year in 1980.
  Bliss was secretary of the United Methodist Women at First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She also did a mission trip to Costa Rica.
  District Court Judge Lillian Jordan, a close friend, called her “the most wonderful woman I’ve ever known. Her heart was always in the right place.”
  Jordan said her friend came to Asheboro in the early 1960s to teach school. That’s when she met Chuck Bliss, an engineer at General Electric. They married and left Asheboro for a few years when he was transferred.
  They had moved back by the early 1970s, said Jordan. Since both Bliss and Jordan were interested in women’s rights, someone suggested they get together.
  “We worked hard on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA),” she said. That was about the time Bliss became head of the state organization.
  
  Then Bliss and Jordan were appointed by the county commissioners to a committee on the Status of Women in Randolph County.
  “I went to law school and she really did the work to start the Family Crisis Center,” Jordan said. “She was on the board for years.”
  Jordan said that over the years the two met with other women for breakfast once a week. But Bliss was diagnosed with ALS, known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in the fall of 2013. As her health declined the last couple of months, Bliss was unable to attend the weekly breakfast.
  Jordan said she has four sons and Bliss had three children. The oldest Jordan son, Tom Jr., lives in Chicago.
  
  “My son came in the fall and went to the breakfast with me,” Jordan said. “She was so excited to see him.”
  When Bliss told Tom that she wasn’t doing very well, he replied, “Maria, you’re just as beautiful as ever.”
  Bliss celebrated her 83rd birthday in February and the breakfast crew went to her home to wish her happy birthday, Jordan said. “I think she enjoyed it because she smiled a lot.”
  
  Jordan said her first husband, Tom O’Briant, had died of ALS, so seeing her friend going downhill with the same disease was especially difficult.
  “I saw her (Monday) and told Chuck we’d take him to vote,” Jordan said. “Maria would have wanted him to.”
  “She was a wonderful mother,” Jordan added. “She and Chuck got along great.”
  Their three children are twins Katherine and Charles and younger son Neil.
  Lloyd Hamlet, who as chair of the Randolph County Democratic Party got to know Bliss well, had nothing but good things to say about her.
  “She was a fantastic woman,” he said. “She was so involved in the community, so involved in wanting to know the right thing to do.”
  Besides being politically involved, Hamlet said, Bliss was similarly involved in her church, First United Methodist. “She wanted to make things right in the world, make things right for all people. Whatever in the community she could do to make the lives of people better, she was willing to do it.”
  Hamlet said he first knew Bliss through the Democratic Party “but got to know how she tried to make lives better for those who’d had a rough life. She was always talking about how to make things better.”
  Jordan said Bliss died Tuesday morning at her home. The funeral and burial will be held in Wadesboro, where she grew up. A memorial service is expected to take place in Asheboro, with details to be announced later.
