She was a native of Bladen County, the daughter of the late Landon D. and Beulah A. Edge Beard. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by two daughters, Madalene S. Melvin of Barhamsville, Va. and Evalene S. Hicks of Newport News, Va; five sons, Canady A. Smith, Jr. and Rabon Smith, both of Newport News, Va., Dwight Smith of Yorktown, Va., Herman Ellison Smith of Council and Larry Smith of Orlando, Fla; 22 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandchild.
