Annie Lois Cain 'Lois'

• Biography*: Mrs. Jack Bowman (Lois Cain Bowman), a resident of the Plantation Estates retirement community in Matthews, N.C., died in the early morning of April 5, 2010, at age 84, of congestive heart failure. Her death came at the home of her sister Elzola Padgett after a splendid Easter Weekend with family, near where she grew up on the Bladen County farm of her parents, Owen B. and Annie Bell Coble Cain, not far from Elizabethtown and the Cape Fear River. With five sisters and two brothers, her years growing up on the farm were certainly interesting, lively, and challenging. At the end of her life, she had no need to wonder whether she had lived fully and richly.
  Lois was born on December 1, 1925. After graduating from High School in Bladen County, she attended nursing school in Wilmington, at James Walker Memorial Hospital. While practicing as an RN, she met and married Stokes County native Jack Bowman in 1950. The couple remained in Wilmington, and their close, committed marriage lasted until Jack's death in August 1997. Jack was a trainman with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and she was a nurse, practicing in various hospital departments and units. They were devoted members of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where they each contributed much to the life and mission of the church. They had three children, Everett, Kim, and Carol. Lois and Jack valued education highly, and they were proud of sending Everett to Harvard and Kim and Carol to UNC Chapel Hill, starting them on their own successful and productive paths. Lois was active in the Railroad Auxiliary and the James Walker Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. After retiring as a nurse, she continued to contribute to New Hanover Memorial Hospital (successor of James Walker Hospital) as a volunteer. In 2005, she moved from Wilmington to Plantation Estates in Matthews, so that she could be nearer to Everett and Carol. Upon moving to Matthews, she joined Matthews United Methodist Church, where Carol and her family were members.
  Members of Lois's family now living include: her son Everett Bowman of Charlotte, N.C. and her former daughter-in-law Vicki Bott of Charlotte; her son Kim Bowman and daughter-in-law Karen Bowman of Clarendon Hills, Illinois, and their children, Kyle and Blair; her daughter Carol Hatcher and son-in-law Samuel Hatcher of Matthews, N.C., and their children, Paige and Sam III. Also still living are Lois's sister Elzola Padgett; her sister Alta Mae Budd and brother-in-law Don; sister Mildred Davidson; sister Carolyn Peterson; sister-in-law Helen Cain; brother Owen Beatty Cain; and Jack's sisters Sara Ann Bowman, Adelaide Hoffman, and Sammy Bowman. Lois is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
  Lois loved her family best, but also dear to her were: her church (she was a member of First Christian Church for 57 years) and fellow church members; her nursing career and her colleagues at the hospital; cats and dogs and other animals (especially cats); meeting and getting to know people (she was outgoing and loved to converse; her vitality was contagious, and no one could long remain a stranger to her); Wrightsville Beach and the outdoors (she said a few days before she died, "I really love trees—I've always loved just looking at them"); gardening; cooking and eating good food (her pecan pies, fruit pies, cakes, slow-cooked vegetables, and seafood dishes were locally famous, as were the tomatoes, squash, beans, pecans, grapes and peaches from the back-yard garden that she and Jack tended). Fortunately, she passed along her love of cooking, and many of her recipes, to her children. Lois also greatly appreciated good manners and thoughtful behavior towards others, and she taught her children at least to strive towards those goals. Her family and friends will all miss her so much.
  Lois's funeral will be held at First Christian Church, 2035 Oleander Drive, in Wilmington on Thursday, April 8, at 2:00 p.m. Members of Lois's family will be at the church for visitation before the funeral service, between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.
