  On September 8, 1924 Mary Joan (Jo) Davis was born to Olin Thales and Sarah Louise Barnes Davis as the youngest of seven children.
  
  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Herring Shoaf; son, Philip Davis Shoaf; sister, Verona Davis Sutton; brothers, Hugh Wallace Davis, Foy Adollphus Davis, Olin Thales Davis, Jr. and Edd Shemwell Davis. She grew up in the community of Churchland, in Davidson County, N.C., and later lived in Lexington, N.C. until she moved to Roanoke, Va. in 1984 to be near her younger daughter.
  
  Surviving are daughters, Roberta (Robbie) Shoaf Harrison Griffin (Marion), of Norcross, Ga. and Margaret Shoaf Beazley (Luthur), of Roanoke, Va; grandchildren are Mary Elisha Harrison Vallo (Jacob), of Atlanta, Ga., Capt. Luthur (Luke) Beazley IV (Kyung Nam), of Columbus, Ga., Capt. Nicholas Beazley (Catherine Cardiff), of Sanford, N.C., Margaret (Meg) Manier Beazley, of Wilmington, N.C., Joan Ballentine Beazley, of Charlotte, N.C., and her adopted grandson, Alex John Reczkowski, of Pittsfield, Mass; great grandchildren are Sophie and Harper Vallo, of Atlanta, Ga., Gracie, Loyal and Vaughn Beazley, of Columbus, Ga. and Aurelia and Eloise Beazley, of Sanford, N.C.
  
  Jo was a graduate of the 1943 Commercial Class of Woman's College (now UNC-G), Greensboro, N.C. She worked as Executive Secretary to George S. Coble, President of Coble Dairy Products and later to Robert Philpott of United Furniture Corporation. After her husband's death she had the opportunity to open a barbecue restaurant with a neighbor and friend in Salisbury, N.C. which later became Jo's Lexington Barbecue Restaurant.
  
  Following in her father's footsteps of his love of genealogy, she took several courses in Raleigh and began teaching classes thru the Davidson County Community College. She was the founding president of the Genealogy Society of Davidson County, N.C. which began with over 300 members. She published three books of genealogical records: "Will Summaries of Davidson County, NC 1823-1846", "Davidson County, NC Abstracts of Will book 2 1844-1846 and Deed Book 3 18926-1828" and "Records of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregational at Sandy Creek Meeting House in Davidson County NC" beginning in 1773. She also served as the Family History Coordinator for the "Heritage of Davidson County" in 1982, a book which contained 1299 family histories, with a full name index. The first printing of 2000 books was sold the first year.
  
  Jo was a member of Grandin Court Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class in Roanoke, Va. and First Baptist Church of Lexington, N.C. She was a former member of the Grand & Glory Choir, the General James Breckinridge DAR, and a former member of the Dogwood Garden Club.
  
  It was no secret that Jo's love for her family ran deep. She reveled in her role as Granny and would light up when talking about her family. She was fiercely loyal to her UNC Tarheels and her favorite color was "Carolina blue". She was also an avid bridge player and loved to travel.
  
  Jo's family would like to sincerely thank the amazing medical team of Lewis-Gale Medical Center for their compassionate care and support during this time.
  
  The family will receive visitors from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, January 25, 2015 at Oakey's South Chapel. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. the next day, Monday, January 26, 2015 at Grandin Court Baptist Church. On Tuesday, January 27th, the family will receive visitors at Davidson Funeral Home in Lexington, NC at 1 p.m. A 2 p.m. service will follow immediately after visitation, with her interment at Forest Hill Memorial Park following that service.
