• Biography*: In the early 1840's John sold much of his land he had inherited. He sold 517 acres at one time and small acreages at other times.
  
  His Will was written in May, 1847 and recorded in the Aug., 1847, Term of Court.
  
  The slave, John, that he mentions in his Will was the boy slave left to him by his grandfather, James, Sr., in his Will made in 1837. John Humphrey was to get the slave at his grandmother's death. Court records show that John, the slave, about 23 years old, was sold in Nov., 1847 after John Humphrey died.

  Christina Jo "Cree" Stapleton of Haskell, Texas passed away early Saturday morning, July 6, 2013 at Haskell Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Stapleton was 69. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at First United Methodist Church with Dale Turner and Rev. Dustin Wilhite officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the services at Willow Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes.
  
  Christina Jo Couch was born April 30, 1944 in Pecos, Texas to J.E. and Sue (Armstrong) Couch. An avid reader and graduate of Texas Tech University, Christina married Max Stapleton in Pecos in 1965. She began her teaching career in Vanderbuilt, Texas, but soon the couple moved to Haskell where Christina began teaching school in Weinert. Throughout her career, she was very active with many classes and sponsoring the National Honor Society and Student Council as well as the Spanish Club and their many trips. She enjoyed the sponsorship of the Jr. High Cheerleaders and you would often see her at the concession stand for the many basketball games over the years.
  
  In 1998, the school annual was dedicated to her for the many committed years and lives she impressed. She will always be remembered for her loyalty and devotion to everyone she touched. After retirement, Christina taught Spanish and Texas History with Paint Creek Schools and was a substitute teacher for Throckmorton Schools.
  
  Christina was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church and loved teaching Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. She was always available to help with church programs, especially the children's programs.
  
  She is preceded in death by her parents, J.E. and Sue Couch. Christina leaves behind her husband of 48 years, Max of Haskell; daughter Kaki Stapleton Cooper and husband Ryan of Lubbock; 2 grandchildren, Hannah Kate Cooper and Lily Clare Cooper; her sister, Susanne Flowers; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
  
  Serving as pallbearers for Mrs. Stapleton are Jeff Flowers, Jay Flowers, Coley Flowers, Chad Gibson, Joey Kimbrough, and Mik Everett.
  
  If desired, memorials can be made in Christina's name to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 201 N. Avenue F, Haskell, Texas 79521.

  Obituary:
  Joseph Roy Humphrey passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning of May 9, 2016 at the Retirement and Nursing Center in Austin, Texas.
  
  Joe, or J.R., was born in Point, Texas on September 14, 1918. He graduated from Texas A&M University before enlisting in the U.S. Navy where he served as a pilot and flight instructor during World War II. After the war, Joe married fellow Navy flight instructor, Louise L. Humphrey, and started a family. He worked in the agricultural business and after retirement maintained a small farm. Joe was also as a private flight instructor and served in the Civil Air Patrol. Joe's hobbies included reading, gardening, playing dominoes, flying, and bird-watching.
  
  Joe is survived by his children, Carol Dillard, David Humphrey, Mary Humphrey, Thomas Humphrey, and Elizabeth Johnson, his grandchildren, as well as other family members and friends.
  
  The family wants to express its deepest appreciation to the wonderful staff at the Retirement and Nursing Center, who provided Joe with good care and showed him such kindness during his final years. Also, in lieu of flowers, the family respectfully recommends donations to groups such as Family Eldercare who provide services to the elderly or to groups such as the Civil Air Patrol who provide rescue and disaster relief services.

He was a professor emeritus from the College of Engineering. After his official retirement from LSU in 1985, he spent 10 years working with the Department of Continuing Education. His passion was learning. His vocation was teaching, whether it was the word of the Lord or engineering graphics. He taught his students the practical ways of industry as well as the knowledge that comes from books. He taught his family and lived his life as an example for others to learn the commandment of the Lord: Love the Lord with all your heart and love your neighbor as you love yourself. He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Lea Hall; his daughter and son-in-law, Judith Kathryn and Richard Schroeder; his brothers, James Lloyd Hall and Herbert Murl Hall; and numerous nieces and nephews.
