Biography*: Edna Livingston Kinlaw, 91, died on Friday, February 14, 2003 at Scotia Village Retirement Center in Laurinburg, North Carolina.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, February 19th at the First United Methodist Church in Laurinburg. Burial will follow in the Livingston Family Cemetery near Sneads Grove, North Carolina. The family will receive friends at the Scotia Village Retirement Center in Laurinburg from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 18th.

Born in Scotland County on September 3, 1911, Mrs. Kinlaw was the daughter of Major Foster Livingston and Lena Peele Livingston. She graduated from Laurinburg High School in 1928 and earned a bachelors degree with honors from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Womans College) in 1932. She was married to the late Harvey Council Kinlaw of Robeson County in 1934.

Following her husband's death in 1953, Mrs. Kinlaw nurtured their three young children and teenage daughter. While placing emphasis on her responsibilities as a single parent, she also became recognized as a dedicated high school teacher who cherished relationships with students. Her career in education included two years in the Robeson County schools, one year in Michigan, 12 years at Gibson High School, and ten years at Scotland High School. At Scotland High, she taught courses including mathematical analysis and served as chairperson of the Mathematics Department. She was a lifelong member of the National Education Association, the North Carolina Association of Educators, the National Association of Teachers of Mathematics, and the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

After her retirement, Mrs. Kinlaw remained active as a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile and Meals-on-Wheels and was a member of the Scotch Gardeners Club, the Thursday Afternoon Book Club, and United Methodist Women. She also participated in many activities offered by the Scotland County Parks and Recreation Department. She continued to learn by traveling extensively and by auditing many courses at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

Mrs. Kinlaw is survived by a daughter, Florence Eileen Cappel of Fairfax, Virginia; two sons, Francis Harvey Kinlaw of Greensboro, North Carolina, and John Livingston Kinlaw of Greenwood, South Carolina; one brother, Eugene F. Livingston of Laurinburg; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. One daughter, Edna Muriel Cordray, preceded her in death.
