James BLACKMON
M, #81068, b. before 1760, d. May 1831
Last Edited: 1 May 2014
- Biography*: We have no record of where James Blackmon, Sr., came from nor who were his parents. It has been suggested that he was the son of Benjamin Blackmon in the Georgetown District and grandson of Thomas and Sarah Blackmon of Charleston, immigrants from England.
Thomas and Sarah had three children, Thomas, Benjamin, and Mary who married James Cree.
Thomas Sr. was a Revolutionary patriot and died sometime before 1 February 1783 when Sarah was made administrator of his estate. (S.C. Archives, Rev. Record Thomas Blackmon, #AA-522). According to public record, his wife Sarah drew his pension. Sarah died in 1801 and their son Thomas was executor of her will. (S.C. Archives, Columbia, SC).
Benjamin Blackmon moved into the Georgetown and Pee Dee section. There is evidence that a Benjamin Blackmon (residence unknown) gave his son John Blackmon, a plantation in Lancaster District, SC in 1792. It was located on both sides of the Great Lynches Creek at the mouth of the Tuckahowe Creek which is in the present Taxahaw section. Benjamin did not mention any children in his will. (Charleston County Wills, Vol. 39, Book C, 1826-34 or Vol. 46, page 915 in W.P.A. copy of Charleston Wills in S.C. Archives, Columbia, S.C. The Will was probated on 25 October 1831). However, this is not to be taken as proof that there were no children in the family. The U.S. census only lists one Benjamin Blackmon living in the state. This suggests he was the son of Thomas and Sarah Blackmon. According to the 1790 census, this Benjamin Blackmon family had 5 sons over the age of 16. Benjamin owned land in Camden District as early as ______."
James, Sr., was granted 107 acres of land in the Lancaster County, Camden District, SC in 1784.
James married Anna Clark before 1785. She was the daughter of Daniel and Katy (Katherine) Clark. James and Anna were born before 1765.
According to J.D. Caston, the land was one mile south of the present Fork Hills Baptist Church. The place later became known as the John J Blackmon place for he either bought or inherited the property when his father's estate was settled in 1831-33. Anna Blackmon died before the 1830 census."
James became a large land owner. In 1809 (Kershaw Old Deeds, Book F, Page 75) he sold 400 acres in Kershaw District, 100 acres to James McKinsey, and 300 acres to John Wheat which was located on Granny Quarter Creek adjoining lands of James Riddle."
The local newspaper, The Lancaster Ledger, June 1, 1859, carried the obituary of John J. Blackmon, stated that he was born on 29 Jan 1785, on the same plantation whereon he died 22 May 1859. Records prove that John J Blackmon was the son of James and Anna (Anney) Blackmon who seems to be the same James as listed above."
In the 1800 census, James Blackmon was still living in Lancaster District, SC with his family. There were two sons between 16 to 26, two sons between 10 and 16, three sons under 10, his wife, one female in the 26-45 age bracket, and one female in the 10-16 age bracket. At this time, James and Anna were over 45 years of age.
James sold land in 1808 and the dower was signed by Anna Blackmon. (Lancaster County, Old Deeds, Book N, page 409, May 27, 1808.)" Their children were: John J. Blackmon, born 29 January 1785, died 22 May 1859. (Lancaster Ledger, June 1, 1859.) Married Lydia ______ who was born about 1780 and died 25 February 1856. (Lancaster Ledger, 12 March 1856.)
John J Blackmon and his wife Lydia gave the land for the Fork Hill Baptist Church which was organized in 1813 and has always been on the same land. They are both buried in the Fork Hills Baptist Church Cemetery. There is a marker at the Church, Figure 1, but not at the Cemetery." (See the notes for John J Blackmon for his list of the children of John and Lydia). Sarah Blackmon, born ca 1780, died 1820. Married sometime before 1800 to Burrell Clark who was born in South Carolina in 1775 and died in York County ca 1842-45. (Will filed in Monroe, N.C.) Their children were:" (See notes for Sarah and Burrell for a list of their children.) After Sarah's death, Burrell Clark married Elizabeth Ingram and moved to Monroe, North Carolina. Burrell and Elizabeth had a big family of eleven children; making twenty-one children for Burrell by both wives.
Several of his children by Sarah immigrated to California during the 1849 Gold Rush, from there to Trinidad and Senoro, Mexico, and where they were lost to our history. (Information provided by Mr. Glenn Hawfield, Chairman, Union County Historical Commission, Union County, N.C. whose wife is a descendant of Burrell and Elizabeth Clark.)" Jeremiah Blackmon. Died before 2 July 1832. (Lancaster County, Equity Records.
In the settling of the estate of James Blackmon on 2, July 1832, the record states that Elisha Blackmon was made the guardian of Jeremiah's minor children, heirs of James Blackmon. Jeremiah would have to be deceased before an assignment of guardianship could be made.) The two children that we have record of are: Eliza Jane Blackmon Mary Matilda Blackmon" Elisha Blackmon. Born 1797, died about 1862. (Lancaster Ledger 30, July 1862.) He was married to Susannah (Susan) Johnson sometime before 8 Aug 1833. On that date Susannah signed a dower for her husband in the sale of land. (Lancaster County, Old Deeds, Book M, page 236.)
The late Robert A. Blackmon also said that his grandmother's name was Susannah. Their children were:" Benjamin Blackmon, born ca 1780, who married Tabitha Clark, daughter of Nathaniel Clark. Their children were:" _______ Blackmon whose widow Nelly was made guardian for their daughter Ibby in July 1833 when the estate of James Blackmon was settled and Ibby was a minor heir. - Birth*: James was born before 1760 at Scotland.
- Marriage*: He married Anna CLARK, daughter of Daniel CLARK and Katherine ?? 'Katy', circa 1785.
- Death*: James died in May 1831.
