  • Biography*: In the South Carolina Archives, State Plots V. 57, p. 26, there is a land plat prepared for John J. Blackman, who was a very large landholder, 4948 acres. This plat shows that some of the owners of land adjacent to that of John J. Blackman include J.D. Blackmon, James A. Blackmon, Elisha Blackmon, J. Blackman, and Benjamin Blackmon. This land is southeast of Lancaster, in the Fork Hill area, between Flat Creek and Little Lynches Creek, near the headwaters of both of these creeks. This may be our J.D. Blackmon. The survey is dated 4 Jun 1855, and we note that while the censuses show J. D. Blackmon as not owning any land in 1850, he is shown as owning land in 1860. The plat shows the gold mine in the middle of John J.'s property, presumably the Blackmon Gold Mine, which was owned by John J. This plat indicates that the mine was apparently excluded from the plat. The Haile Gold Mine, described briefly below, was about 3 miles northeast of the center of the town of Kershaw. (The Blackmon Gold Mine, originally owned by John J. Blackmon, was about 10 miles north-northwest of the Haile Gold Mine.) The following is from Historical Notes from Lancaster County South Carolina, compiled by Viola Caston Floyd, 1977, for the Lancaster County Historical Commission: "HAILE GOLD MINE includes the lands around an old gold mine site near Kershaw. Gold was first discovered there in 1827, on a branch of Little Lynches Creek on the plantation of Colonel Benjamin Haile. Haile migrated to Lancaster District from Virginia. For two years after the discovery, gold was panned on the place. In 1829 they began to mine on a large scale, and in 1837 a 5-stamp mill was built and operated there. It is said to have been the second stamp mill ever operated in the United States. Haile Gold Mine was at one time rated as the largest producer of gold east of the Appalachian Mountains." "Gold is no longer mined at Haile but mica is found in large quantities. It is being mined and shipped to all parts of the world by the Mineralite Company which makes its headquarters at the old BLACKMON GOLD MINE [emphasis added] in Lancaster County where they also mine mica." Other references have stated that the Haile Mine produced more than $1,000 a day over some periods.

  • Biography*: He was one of the executors of his father's estate. (Lancaster County, Old Deeds, book S, page 203, and is named as a son of John J. Blackmon who was owner of a gold mine.) In 1867, William sold land and his interest in the gold mine to Delila Jane Blackmon and Sarah Misura (Missouri) Hinson, wife of M. L. Hinson. These two could have been his daughters but the deed does not provide the relationships. (Lancaster County, Old Deeds, Book S., page 579, states that William sold 64 acres and his interest in the gold mine for $480 on 15 March 1867. The land was in Lancaster district bound by land owned by John Gardner, Uriah Small, Daniel Hinson, and Clary(?) Baker.)
