  • Biography*: Michael K. Leonard
    Sep 22, 1940 - Sat Dec 31, 2011

Michael K. Leonard Sr, "Big Mike" or "My Mike", our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle passed away peacefully at home Dec 31, 2011 surrounded by his loving family and special friends. His long valiant struggle with cancer which began Dec. 27, 1987 finally came to a peaceful end. He was born September 22, 1940 in Swainsboro, GA to P.D. Leonard, Sr. and Elizabeth Tyson Leonard. He was descended from the original settlers of both Emanuel County, GA and Lexington, NC. Growing up on Main St in Swainsboro provided many special memories of small town life in the 1940's and 1950's where his father ran the stockyard. Mike graduated from Swainsboro High School in 1958 where he had the distinction of perfect attendance and was a star athlete voted most athletic in his class. Mike then went into the US Army where he was first stationed at Ft Jackson and then Ft. Hood Texas. The stories about how he learned how to drive a tank in the army provided his grandchildren with much amusement! After his brief stint in the army, Mike then attended the Georgia Military College and Troy State University. While trying to figure out what to do with his life he decided to work for the railroad but that lasted only one trip from Macon, GA to Camak, Ga where the conductor told him he didn't have a career on the railroad!

He then settled back in Swainsboro and married June Lovins, the love of his life. He and his brother Tyson started the Leonard Aluminum Utility Building company in the 1960's which now operates 51 stores across the southeast. He moved to Charlotte in 1975 as the company was becoming more centralized in North Carolina. Charlotte became his home where he and June raised their family. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Swainsboro Country Club, Carmel Country Club, and Barefoot Country Club. The highlight of his golf career was at Jefferson Landing golf club on July 14, 1998 where he shot a "hole in one" while playing golf with his daughter and son in law! He was a great golfer and an expert card player having spent many hours in the men's card room at Carmel Country Club! He loved giving all those around him golf lessons whether they wanted them or not.

The absolute highlight of his life was the time he spent with his three beloved grandchildren. He loved taking them to the family beach house "The Breathe Easy" at Cherry Grove, SC. He last played golf with all his family in February of 2011 in Myrtle Beach. His other favorite beach activity was eating out at Hoskins Restaurant where he had been dining since he was 10 years old. He loved boiled peanuts and Lexington style BBQ!

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Dick, Jim, and Frosty Leonard. He is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years June Lovins Leonard, son Dr. Michael Leonard and wife Dr. Anitha Leonard, daughter April Leonard Tegeler and husband Sgt. John Tegeler, all of Charlotte. He also is survived by his three wonderful grandchildren that he adored: Jacob Tyson Leonard, Elizabeth Hall Tegeler and Leela Madhure Leonard. He is also survived by brother Tyson and wife Sandy Leonard of Galax, VA, brother P.D. "Pete" and wife Helen Leonard of Mt. Airy, NC, and sister Diana and husband Thomas Ramsey of Bradenton, FL, brother-in-law Dexter and wife Julianne Lovins of Dearing, GA and sister-in-law Mavis and husband Jack Flanders of Statesboro, GA and Jeddah, Saudia Arabia. He also has a special nephew that was like a brother to him, J.P. Leonard, of Pinckard, AL. He is survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews. We would like to also thank dad's special friend and neighbor Jack Langley who has been a constant source of support and friendship.
We owe a special thank you to Dr. Dan Howard and his nurses Tammy and Mary. Mike was also cared for by Drs. Peter Justis, Gary Frenette, Bill Bobo, Ben Hippen and we thank all of them. We are grateful to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, especially Harold Hudson, Martha Gilbert and LaWanda Franklin for providing comfort to both Big Mike and his family. The Lung Transplant Team at Emory Hospital is very special to us as they gave Big Mike the gift of a new life with his lung transplant. He attended Calvary Church and we would like to thank Dr. Ross Rhoads for his ministry, especially in these last months.

A memorial service, officiated by Dr. John Munro and Rev. Harold Hudson will be held at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Rd., Charlotte on Wednesday Jan. 4, 2012 at 2 pm. The family will receive visitors at McEwen Pineville Chapel on Tuesday Jan 3, 2012 from 6-7pm. There will be a graveside service at the Swainsboro City Cemetery in Swainsboro, GA on Saturday Jan. 7, 2012 at 11:00 am followed by a reception at the Swainsboro Country Club. Pallbearers will be nephews Darren Lovins and Trey Leonard and special lifelong friends, Don Flanders, Billy Holder, Bob Youmans and Mike Youmans.

Memorials may be made to the McKelvey Lung Transplant Center at Emory University, 1365 Clifton Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30322 or to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th St, Charlotte NC 28204.

Pete Leonard
Last Edited: 12 Feb 2019
  • Biography*: On Tuesday, November 27, 2018, Pierce (Pete) Dorsett Leonard, Jr. graduated from his earthly realm to the eternal. After a courageous twelve year battle with cancer, he spent his last days on earth surrounded by family and friends. His story began on June 11, 1945 in Swainsboro, Georgia. Born to Pierce Dorsett, Sr. and Elizabeth Tyson Leonard, Pete was the baby of seven children. His parents instilled in him the true values of love, kindness, honesty and the desire to achieve your life’s goals. After graduating from Swainsboro High School in 1963, he attended Georgia Southern College (now University) where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Business and Marketing. Upon graduation, he was hired by R. J. Reynolds tobacco, Co. as a sales representative in the Georgetown, SC area. However, before he could assume his new position, he was called up by the Georgia National Guard and had to spend his six months active duty at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. Shortly after completing his basic training, he returned to his career at Reynolds. Later, he was offered a position by his brothers to work for them at Leonard Aluminum Bldgs., Inc. He spent his first several years setting up sales locations in Knoxville, TN and Richmond, VA before moving to Mount Airy, NC to supervise the building of the new manufacturing facility and set up production. In his later years, he formed his own company, Leonard Auto Sales. Most recently his ambition to continuously succeed came to reality when he, Trey, and Travis established the Golf Cart Outlet of Mount Airy. Pete’s influence reached far beyond the norm, “Pard” brought a dynamic to his family and friends that may never be duplicated. Everyone’s memories, however unique, will provide humorous entertainment and enjoyment for a life time. Those left with the task of carrying on Pete’s loving memory are his wife of 50 years, Helen Belcher Leonard; his son, Trey Leonard and his wife, Tina of Mount Airy; a brother, Tyson Leonard and his wife, Sandy of Independence, VA; two sisters-in-law, June Leonard of Charlotte, NC and Sue Leonard of Cary, NC; two brothers-in-law, Thomas Ramsey of AZ and Aaron Belcher and his wife, Vicki of Statesboro, GA; a special nephew/brother, Jimmy Leonard of Pinckard, AL, many nieces and nephews; and an abundance of surrogate children and grandchildren. Pete was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Sarah Leonard; his sister, Diana Leonard Ramsey; and four brothers, Mike, Dick, Jim and Frosty Leonard. A celebration of Pete’s life will be held Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 4:00 PM at Flat Rock Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Jon Cawley. The family will visit Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the church. Memorials may be made to the Flat Rock Baptist Church, PO Box 587, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or any charity of the donor’s choice.

    Hilda Brittain

    September 21, 1922 - May 7, 2023

Hilda Flowers Brittain, age 100, entered into her Heavenly home on Sunday, May 7, 2023 surrounded by her family, at her home in Hickory, North Carolina. Hilda was born in Hickory, N.C. on September 21, 1922, and was the youngest of six children and the daughter of the late Edgar Lee and Olive Catherine Deal Flowers. Hilda was a member of HIS Image Ministries, formerly named Healing Springs Church.

Hilda's contributions and accomplishments in the Hickory community included teaching at Hickory High School, starting in 1962, starting The Future Business Leaders of America in 1964, and later teaching at CVCC. Hilda was also the Co-Founder and President of the NC Business Education Association (1967-1968). Hilda retired from CVCC in 1973, so that she and her husband Ralph could prepare to go into the ministry. In 1974, the Brittains were ordained and set forth into ministry by traveling and having weekly in-home bible studies and speaking engagements. In 1976, Hilda and Ralph started Brittain Ministries, Inc. During that time Hilda also started the Hickory chapter of the Women's Aglow and was a gifted teacher of the Word. Hilda published her first book, "And There Is More" in 1976, which explained the miracles that God had done in their lives. In 1980, the Brittains started a church in Hickory called Christian Ministries Fellowship, which was later renamed Healing Springs Church.

Hilda was a true southern lady who treasured her family and gave tirelessly to them and others she knew. She loved being a minister of the Lord and shared her love for Him in many ways. Her home was a revolving door to others, as she worked on the daily tasks of the Ministry. She was always ready to give a listening ear, share encouraging words or helpful scriptures and pray for others. She had a captivating smile, a compassionate heart and contagious laughter. Her joyful spirit allowed Jesus to shine through and everyone that came in contact with her could tell there was something special about her. She lived her life as a true example of Christ, always serving him. Hilda was a gifted teacher and a great storyteller. She delighted in sharing how the Lord had worked in her life and others and sharing wonderful family memories. She always seemed to incorporate a whistling tune into her captivating stories as well. Hilda loved life and trusted in the Lord as His faithful servant and encouraged others to do the same. Being a witness of her faith continued until her final days. She trusted the Lord for every need in her life and always encouraged others to do the same. She ran her course with faith, commitment, and discipline as an example to all she met. She stood in faith on God's promise to live a long life, satisfied (Psalms 91, verse 16). We know that as she entered Heaven, the Lord greeted her with the statement, "Well done, thy good and faithful servant). Her memory and legacy will live on in our hearts forever.

Hilda was preceded in death by her loving husband, Rev. Dr. Ralph Brittain and their three infants, as well as her siblings Cloyd Flowers, Helen Tilson, Virginia Hart, Harold Flowers, and Margaret Cline.

Hilda is survived by her four children, including June Brittain Cherry and her husband John, of Denver, N.C. Ralph C. Brittain, Jr. and his wife Judi, of Southport, N.C. Daniel E. Brittain and his wife Fonda, of Hickory, N.C. and Mary Chapin Stamey, and her husband Harvey of Hickory, N.C. She is also survived by ten grandchildren: Jeff Brittain and his wife Ashley, Katheryn Brotherton and her fiance Kevin, Kirk Brittain and his wife Lisa, David Brittain, Hannah Cobb and her husband Danny, Mary Lynn Gaines and her husband Trent, Jennifer Jamison and her husband Parker, Chris Chapin and his wife Natalie, Andrew Chapin, Jackson Stamey and Jonathan Stamey. She is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren: Benjamin Brittain, Emmagrace Cobb, Jacob Brittain, Jonathan Brittain, Noah Brotherton, Brittain Gaines, Laura Gaines, Chloe Cobb, Hannah Robinson, Lexie Robinson, Autumn Chapin, Cecilia Chapin, Maximilian Chapin, and Everleigh Jamison.

Viewing and Visitation will be held from 1 until 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at HIS Image Ministries. A Celebration of Life Service will immediately follow, beginning at 3 p.m. The burial will be a private family gathering at Oakwood Cemetery following the service. In lieu of sending flowers, her legacy can be honored through a donation to Brittain Ministries which will be carried on by her daughters Mary and June and the ministry board. The ministry address is 323 3rd Street. NW, Hickory, NC, 28601 or visit the Brittain Ministries website: www.brittainministries.org.
