    "Nancy JoAnn West Britt, 81, of Spring Lake went home to be with the Lord on July 18, 2022 at her home surrounded with love and comfort from her family.

    JoAnn was born in Harnett County on August 14, 1940 to the late George and Emmer West. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James Leo Matthews, who passed away in 1968.

    JoAnn leaves a lifetime of memories with her husband of 45 years, H. L. Britt; two daughters, Angela Reynolds of Spring Lake and Wendy Serio and husband Travis of Carthage; one step-son, David Britt, of Fayetteville; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

    JoAnn enjoyed working in her yard, gardening, singing, dancing, playing the piano and traveling anywhere and anytime with her family.

    There will be a service honoring JoAnn’s life at 11:30AM on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at Adcock Funeral Home, Spring Lake with Pastor John Chancey officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:00AM. A private burial will follow at a later time.

    Six months after his arrival in AL, Kedar enlisted in the U.S. Army under General Jackson, and continued with him until the close of the Indian War in Florida. He was baptized by Rev. Alexander Travis and began to preach three years afterward.

    He began his ministerial work in the Forks Sepulga, and later founded the Baptist church known as the "Fellowship Church".

    In 1856, Rev. Hawthorn moved to Mobile, AL and established a book store.

    Alexander T. Hawthorn was born near Evergreen, Conecuh County, Alabama. He attended Evergreen Academy and Mercer University. He studied law at Yale University in 1846 and 1847. After leaving Yale, he relocated to Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas, and opened a law practice.

    At the outbreak of the Civil War, Hawthorn organized the 6th Arkansas Infantry Regiment and was elected lieutenant colonel. By 1862 he had advanced to colonel of the regiment. Hawthorn led the 6th during the Battle of Shiloh. Hawthorn was not reelected after 6th Arkansas was reorganized and he was reassigned to the Trans-Mississippi Department and returned to Arkansas

    On February 28, 1864, Hawthorn received his commission as a brigadier general. He participated in the Arkansas portion of the Red River Campaign and commanded his brigade at the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry under General Thomas James Churchill.

    After the war, Hawthorn emigrated to Brazil but moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1874 and established a career in business. In 1880 Hawthorn was ordained into the Baptist ministry and thereafter moved to Dallas, Texas

    Hawthorn died in Dallas, Texas, and is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Marshall, Harrison County, TX.

    Alexander Travis Hawthorn

    Hawthorn was born 10 January 1825 near Evergreen, in Conecuh County, Alabama. He was educated at Evergreen Academy and Mercer University in Alabama before studying law at Yale. After completing his law studies in 1847 he moved to Camden, Arkansas where he established a practice.

    When the war erupted Hawthorn offered his services to his adopted state. He joined the 6th Arkansas infantry and on 7 June 1861 was elected the regiment's lieutenant colonel. On 15 October 1861 he was promoted to colonel and given command of the 6th which he led at Shiloh. Following Shiloh, according to the 25 April 1862 Conscription Act the 6th was reorganized. On 14 May 1862 regimental elections were held and Hawthorn failed in his bid to retain command. He was reassigned to Arkansas in the Department of the Trans-Mississippi. On 4 November 1862 he was named colonel of what became known as Hawthorn's Arkansas regiment. He commanded this regiment when Confederates under Theophilus H Holmes attacked Helena, Arkansas. On 5 January 1864, when Hawthorn's regiment was reorganized, Hawthorn again failed in a bid to be reelected to command. Just over a month later, on 18 February 1864, he was promoted to brigadier general and assigned command of a brigade consisting of the 29th, 34th, and 35th Arkansas regiments. Hawthorn and his brigade were assigned to the division of Thomas J Churchill and took part in the campaign against Nathaniel P Banks in April 1864 along the Red River most notably gaining praise for the gallant fight at Jenkin's Ferry on 30 April 1864. Hawthorn remained in command of his brigade, under Churchill, until the end of the war.

    Following being surrendered in Texas, Hawthorn fled first to Mexico then to Brazil where he remained until 1874. Upon returning to the United States he became a businessman in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1880 he was ordained a Baptist minister. He had done some ministry work while in Brazil. He set up a ministry near Dallas, Texas and remained there until he died on 31 May 1899.
