Thomas J. Hege insists on being called Jack.
Here in the 1920s-era house his parents built alongside what is now Greensboro Street Extended, everything is comfortable and cozy. Hege has earned it. The life-long bachelor worked 46 years in the nearby textile mills until he retired in 1992.
"I've never known any other home," he says, "... except Daytona."
Ah, Daytona Beach, Fla. Home of sun, sand and, most importantly for Hege, speed.
What started half a century ago as a trip among friends seeking excitement became an obsession. Which is why the 81-year-old Hege heads south each February like a migratory bird, his destination never changing:
Daytona International Speedway.
As the track celebrates today's 50th running of the Daytona 500, Hege will be there - one of what is surely a small handful of fans who have seen every race. He and friend Richard Crigger have their tickets in the DePalma grandstand: section B, row 23, seats 38 and 39.
Hege's seat often has been in the same general area, just beyond the fourth turn, where he can watch the cars charge off the corner and speed toward the start/finish line.
From those seats, he cheered as Mark Martin and Kevin Harvick dueled to the finish in last year's race. He celebrated when Dale Earnhardt won the 500 in 1998 and saw Earnhardt's fatal crash three years later.
Hege also witnessed many of the track's other memorable moments, from the fight in 1979 between the Allisons and Cale Yarborough to all seven of Richard Petty's wins. Hege was there when Lee Petty won the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959, a race that wasn't declared official until three days later because of the close finish.
The memories flow as he looks back on what he's seen. This is history - not in a book, but living and breathing. He shares it in a deep, gravelly voice weathered by years of yelling at race tracks from Daytona to the Carolinas.
A few trinkets add to his stories. He has the photo he took of Lee Petty's crumpled car after it flew off the track in a 1961 qualifying race, a crash that all but ended Petty's career. There's a photo of Hege and friends with Tim Richmond from the 1980s. Hege also has his ticket from that 1959 race, an "International Sweepstakes," as it proclaims.
As he looks back, he also ponders what's next. Hege admits he's unsure how much longer he'll go to the race. Walking from the parking lot to the grandstands becomes more challenging each year.
Hege, who buys five seats each year, knows what he'll do if he can't make it, though: He wants Crigger, who has attended races on and off with him since 1978, to take the tickets.
Crigger, 67, lives nearby in Thomasville and is like family. Hege visits each weekend to watch the NASCAR race on Crigger's 50-inch television.
"I would hate to see the tickets be lost to some unknown somebody," Crigger says. "I would probably take them for a few more years just to keep them in the family, I reckon you would call it."
Hege shares his Daytona experience with an extended family. Four friends who joined him on his annual Daytona pilgrimages have passed away. Crigger never met Hege until they went to that 1978 race together. Their friendship was instant even though Hege is a Chevrolet man and Crigger supports Ford.
"Friendship is stronger than automobiles," Crigger says.
They might not have met had Hege and friends not ventured to Daytona in 1958. They read about a riot there during a previous beach race and how fire trucks were brought in to hose the crowds and the National Guard arrived to quell the revelers.
That enticed Hege.
"We wanted to see all the action," he says, explaining why he and about 10 cars left Lexington for their own magic kingdom.
Hege liked what he saw when he arrived, from the bathing-suit beauties - "we took a bunch of pictures of them" - to the cars racing on the beach. It wasn't a difficult decision to return the next year, when the race moved to the high-banked 2.5-mile speedway.
"I was looking for vacation," he says. "I was tired of this cold weather. So, Daytona was a good vacation spot. I've been going ever since. That's really what I enjoyed: the racing and the beach."
The price also was right. His ticket to the 1959 race was $8. Today's seat costs $145.
Even as ticket prices increased, Hege returned. He's never come close to missing a 500. Sure, there might have been times he didn't feel good, but he found his tonic in the roar of the engines and the cars speeding by.
It didn't hurt that the Pettys won so often. Hege pulled for them since they were based out of nearby Level Cross. Hege also liked anybody who raced hard and charged to the front.
He'll be looking for the same thing today, and, if he can, for years to come.
