Up to the time of her death, Maggie believed that she would come into a large sum of money. A claim was made that Cain Wilson Strickland was the same Wilson Strickland that ended up in TX around 1830. Wilson Strickland was a TX Ranger at one point. No one knows what happened to him, but oil was found on his land. The land is still know as the 'Wilson Strickland Survey'. A law suit was brought by his heirs, and at the time of her death, there were about 5,000 descendants who were claiming to be heirs of Wilson Strickland.

    Notes, Source: Louise Carmichael, Indiv.# 108936 -
10 Jan., 2005 - Conversation with Mary Lois Wilson Wehrum, Lois attended grammar school in Whiteville, NC and one year of High School in Fair Bluff, NC.

At age 8, about 1932, Lois had an ear infection which also infected the mastoid bone. It was told that she had mastoiditis. She had surgery in the Lumberton, NC hospital to drain the abscess behind her right ear. At the time there were no antibiotics. The surgery did not end the infection and the area contained to drain for 5 years. Her doctor in Fair Bluff, NC was a Dr. Elliot. The area behind her ear was packed with gauze. The dressing changes were painful and Lois was known as a 'sickly child'.

When Lois was about 11 or 12 she and a friend were riding her friend's bike and Lois fainted and fell off the bike near the Cafe, landing on her face and broke off her two top front teeth. It is believed that she fainted due to poor health which was the result of the long standing infection in the bone of her skull behind her right ear. There is a significant depression behind her right ear where the bone abscess was. The two front teeth had 1/2 gold caps put on them. What remained of the teeth were pulled out when Lois was about 19 or 20. She then wore a partial plate the remainder of her life with two false front teeth.

When Lois was about 12 the family moved to Whiteville, NC for about 3 months in about 1935 and her father, Julian, took a job as Postal Clerk in Whiteville, NC. The move was temporary and Julian kept his home in Fair Bluff, NC.

When her father was Mayor of Fair Bluff, NC around 1935, Lois and her brother, Frank, would get free tickets when the circus came to town.

Lois attended Campbell College in Buies Creek, NC in 1942. When she enrolled she listed her name as Mary Lois Wilson, dropping the name Maggie. Her name was never legally changed to 'Mary'. Following her marriage she was known as Lois Wilson Wehrum.

Following her marriage in 1944 she returned to Bolton, NC while her husband was overseas. During that time she learned to fly a plane and it is said that she was the first female pilot in Columbus County, NC.
