  Funeral arrangements for A. G. Hammett Sr., longtime Caddo Parish tax assessor, are incomplete at Osborn Funeral Home.
  
  Mr. Hammett, 92, died at his residence at 825 River Road at 1 p.m. Saturday after a short illness. He had been a resident of Shreveport since 1909.
  
  He served as tax assessor for the parish from 1933 to 1964 when he retired and was succeeded by his stepson, Charles R. Henington.
  
  Mr. Hammett was instrumental in organizing the Louisiana Assessors' Association and served as its first secretary. He also served as vice president, president and chairman of the legislative committee of the organization. In addition, Mr. Hammett was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Louisiana Assessors' Retirement Fund.
  
  Mr. Hammett also was a past state chairman of the National Association of Assessing Officers, and served two years as vice president of the organization before his election as president. In 1964, the association gave him a special award for his public service.
  
  He was elected vice president of the International Association of Assessing Officers in 1960, and served as the organization's president in 1961 and 1962. Mr. Hammett received the group's first presidential citation in 1962, and in 1965 was voted one of five honorary lifetime members.
  
  Mr. Hammett was born in Campti in Natchitoches Parish on Jan. 17, 1881. He attended the public schools of Natchitoches Parish and Northwestern State University.
  
  After leaving college, he was a bookkeeper for plantation stores in Red River and Bossier parishes, a railroad station agent and postmaster, a traveling salesman for a local packing house and operator of several cotton plantations.
  
  Later Mr. Hammett entered the planting and livestock business, becoming a prominent North Louisiana planter and owning three mercantile establishments and three public cotton gins.
  
  He became a real estate agent and was hired by the City of Shreveport to acquire the title to land on which Barksdale Air Force Base was built. The Quartermaster General's office employed him to supervise the construction of the flying field, then the largest in the world. The City of Shreveport also hired Mr. Hammett to supervise the construction of the Downtown Airport.
  
  Mr. Hammett was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Shrine, Mithra Grotto, Jesters, Odd Fellows, Elks and Eastern Star.
  
  Survivors include his widow, the former Alphonse Henington; one daughter, Mrs. B. C. Crothers of Ferriday; one son, James W. Hammett of New Orleans; one stepson, Charles R. Henington; one sister, Mrs. Caroline Hammett Brown of Natichitoches; and five grandchildren.

  SHREVEPORT, LA - A celebration of the life of Alphonse Smith will be at 11 AM, Friday, September 11, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, in the sanctuary. Officiating will be Dr. Ken Dickson and Rev. Jonathan Beck. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 PM at Rose-Neath Marshall Street.
  
  Mrs. Smith, born December 12, 1904, was a native of Pioneer, LA, West Carroll parish, and resided in Shreveport most of her life. She was 104 years old and predeceased by her parents, Peter H. and Willie McCain Rodrigues, and all nine of her sisters and brothers. She passed away peacefully September 9, 2009.
  
  She attended Louisiana Tech, graduated from Draughon's Business College, and completed special courses in assessment administration at Tulane and LSU. She served for 35 years as executive secretary, assistant chief deputy and administrative assistant to the Assessor of Caddo parish during the administrations of her late husband A. G. Hammett and her son Charles R. Henington. She also served as executive secretary and manager of the Louisiana Assessors' Retirement Fund prior to her retirement in 1976.
  
  She was a member of First United Methodist Church Shreveport and active in civic affairs as a charter member of Broadmoor chapter No. 233 Order of the Eastern Star; member of Shreveport Symphony Guild; Shreveport Little Theater Guild; Order of the Amaranth; Woman's Department Club; and life member of the YWCA. She served as Louisiana State secretary and National Argon (president) of Delta Rho Delta national sorority.
  
  Ninny (as she was known to friends and family) was an avid traveler. In recent years she enjoyed many trips with her family and in the past month attended the annual Rodrigues family reunion.
  
  Mrs. Smith is survived by her fourth husband John E. Smith. She was predeceased by three husbands (Therrell I. Henington, realtor; A. G. Hammett, Assessor; Harold Ramsey, band director and principal, Bossier School system) and her only son Charles R. Henington, who was serving as Caddo parish Assessor at his untimely death.
  
  She is survived by grandsons Charles R. Henington, Jr., and wife, Angie, and David T. Henington and Dr. Dominic Salinas; great grandchildren Crystal and husband Chris Smith, Cole and wife Stacy Henington, Matthew, and Abigail Henington; and great-great grandchildren Mallory, Zachary, and Emily Smith and Macy Henington; daughter-in-law Cloe Henington Rinehart and husband Mack; stepdaughters Dr. Mary Jane Ramsey Dickson and husband, Dr. Ken Dickson, of Dallas and Nancy Smith Whitson also of Dallas; stepdaughters-in-law Mrs. James W. (Carolyn) Hammett, Covington, and Mrs. Roberta Hammett Black; and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.
